Setting professional development goals is critical for every healthcare professional and for any other person in the industry. One of the strategies to be incorporated into the professional development goals is the setting of specific career objectives. Setting career objectives is essential for every healthcare professional since it aids in the determination of the appropriate line in the operational processes. Healthcare professionals often ensure that their academic qualifications are excellent to showcase their capability in the healthcare processes. High academic qualifications are important for an individual who want to make a great portfolio, it shows what an individual is capable of doing in the actual operational processes (Evans & Hyams, 2018). Incorporating continuous learning processes as well as the experiences is important when an individual want to build a great professional portfolio.

One of my professional development goals is to provide excellent and patient-centered care. One of the main objectives of a medical personnel is to provide excellent care to the patients. Setting long-term and short-term goals is therefore one of the best strategies for ensuring a success in the professional activities. The goals should involves the provision of the excellent healthcare services to the patients in different clinical settings (Koteva, 2015). The strategies for setting long-term and short term and long term goals should involves the analysis of different healthcare scenario scenarios and the operational processes. Setting goals may also be associated with the career objectives and the requirements in the larger healthcare industry.

The above goals may align with the Walden University’s emphasis on social change in different ways. One of the main goals of the Walden University is provide excellent academic qualifications where learners become aware of the requirements in the actual operational processes. Also, the aim of the institution is to product professionals who are able to provide effective services in different industries. These objectives are in line with what has been stated in the individual portfolio. In other words, the goals align with the Walden University’s emphasis on social change. Another objective of the Walden University is to engage in the production of learners who are capable of creating societal change through the provision of appropriate services. The short term and long term goals are therefore in line with the organizational objectives.

Hello,

The nursing profession is very dynamic, and it pushes nurses to continuously enrich knowledge and skills by engaging in constant professional advancement activities such as seminars, trainings and research. I agree that we always must incorporate continuous learning processes and experiences in our portfolio. Creating a portfolio is the blueprint of our success and it must contain all updated information as to our accomplishments (Laureate Education, 2018). Personally, this activity is rewarding because in the process of updating my portfolio I can do an inventory of the knowledge and skills I have, and I can determine which aspects I still need to improve.

Hannans and Olivo (2017) said that an ePortfolio gives a nurse an opportunity for critical reflection. As we complete and update our

information, we are at the same time reflecting on what we have already accomplished. This is a good source of motivation and can be very rewarding. It also helps employers see our continued professional growth. Burns (2018) supported this idea by emphasizing that a nursing portfolio allows nurses to reach beyond their personal expectations and provides accountability for our own professional development. Updating our portfolio is a win-win situation because we improve our image as professionals in one single document and at the same time, we grow professionally from doing it.

As nurses, we all started from the humble beginnings of being a student and earning our degree through tedious education and training. After satisfying the requirements for nursing licensure, we now embark on a professional journey that allows us to put into action everything that we have learned and apply the experiences that we developed and enhanced in school. It is very critical to be able to create a summary that will speak of our achievements, credentials, and qualifications. Burns (2018) defined a professional portfolio as an evidence of growth and development depicting a summary of a nurse’s education and achievements. This growth and development aspect can be further supplemented by a best work portfolio containing specific documents like awards and recognition. The life of a professional nurse starts with a job hunt, and it is critical to be able to create a document that will be powerful enough to convince employers in order to be able to land in a job that is truly desired.

Building a Portfolio. Hannans and Olivo (2017) described an ePortfolio as a digital fingerprint that reveals a person personally and professionally. It is then very important to make sure that the portfolio we prepare speaks for who we really are and one that will impress employers. In order to be able to effectively build a portfolio, the same authors recommended the search for existing platforms or templates that can be used to create an initial framework. This framework can then be used to organize our personal information that we have to build the content of the portfolio. Incorporating academic achievements is beneficial in supporting qualities of excellence. Casey and Egan (2013) emphasized that in writing the structure and presentation of a portfolio, nurses need to be creative in presenting personal information. This can be achieved by aligning and integrating whatever an organization is looking for in a candidate. According to the same author, this demonstrates self-awareness of an applicant about the job being applied for and the organization’s mission and goals. This is one effective strategy to make sure that portfolios are not generic but can be individualized for different applications. Burns (2018) identified different elements of a nursing portfolio and emphasized that the information provided on each element is one that can be verified. Employers perform a background check and it will be helpful to provide information that will make it easier for them to verify information provided.

Portfolio Development. Leahy and Filiatrault (2017) discussed an article about employers’ perceptions to electronic portfolios and concluded that recruiters had moderately favorable perceptions to ePortfolios. It was emphasized in the same article that employers have a higher probability of connecting with an applicant if in the correspondence a link relevant to the part of the ePortfolio is provided. Job applications have shifted to mostly digital format and it is essential to consider the finding of this article to be able to gain more success in connecting with employers by being able to provide a way for them to search ePortfolios easier.

Conclusion. The journey towards professional enrichment is determined by how a nurse makes good connections to desired employments. It is very crucial to be able to make a blueprint of our success by building an effective portfolio that will appropriately represent us based on our own professional growth and achievements (Laureate Education, 2018). It takes years to build our credibility as professionals, a long process to gain our knowledge, and countless efforts to enhance our skills. It is then very important to put everything into one document that will speak for us, our professional portfolio.

RE: professional growth

Hello Dr….

I have been a nurse for almost three decades now and I can say that my career journey has been extensive. Ever since I completed my bachelor’s program in Nursing, I have always developed the desire to continue to nurture my knowledge and skills by keeping myself up to date with best practices affecting my work.

Professional growth can be equated to self-promotion by taking the professional responsibility to seek advancement in any chosen field of work (Burns, 2018). This self-promotion is a way to be aware of our individual achievements, and this will help provide an internal motivation to be able to enhance our career. As our resources emphasized, it is always up to each individual how success is defined (Laureate Education, 20918). As we move forward in our career, it is essential to always keep in mind to do an inventory of our knowledge and skill set and be responsible enough to enrich these aspects as needed.

Our online identity serves as our digital fingerprint as a professional (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). In my personal experience, my focus has always been on enriching my career, and in the process, I always made sure that I catch all the details of my accomplishments by documenting it in my portfolio.

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

In this Module’s Discussion, you were introduced to the concept of an academic portfolio to begin building your own brand. However, portfolios have value that goes beyond brand building. An academic and professional portfolio can also help you to build your own vision and mission and establish your development goals. In this regard, a portfolio becomes yet another tool in your toolbox as you build your success.

In this Assignment you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by developing the fifth component–a portfolio for your academic and professional efforts.

Nurses use portfolios to document their academic qualifications, credentials, achievements, and successes. Having a portfolio that details a nurse’s qualifications can help smoothen the credentialing process (Burns, 2018). A portfolio is one’s marketing tool to the outside world of employment and is an indicator of how organized a person is.

The first strategy to use when creating a portfolio is figuring out the purpose. Is the portfolio for marketing oneself to get a job? is it for documenting one’s life? (Byrne, Schroeter, Carter & Mower, 2009) It is also important to have a vision and goals. One of my goals is to always renew my certifications that I currently hold.

It is important to maintain nursing competencies. Some organizations require competencies once a year. Competencies can be achieved through experience and continued learning (Fukada, 2018)

These goals align with Walden university’s emphasis on social change because it involves career advancement to positively impact communities.
