Title: NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 2

So, what is plagiarism? Plagiarism is defined as “The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.” (Faulkner, 2018). The integrity of a baccalaureate degree as well as a nursing license is based on the perception of other people. Trust is a reflection on the sincerity and virtue of the nursing profession. If that trust is broken, then the public perception of nearly anything brought forth by a healthcare provider will be questioned. By correctly using and bringing evidence-based practice (EBP) to the forefront of healthcare, lives can be changed for the better.

One example of plagiarism is called unintentional plagiarism. This can occur by incorrectly citing references or poor

paraphrasing. (Faulkner, 2018). This often happens because of a lack of knowledge or understanding. By utilizing the many resources provided by GCU and seeking help, this type of plagiarism can be avoided.

Another example of plagiarism is defined as a person who “knowingly copied the work of another individual and purposefully omitted credit to the original author to take credit for the ideas” (Faulkner, 2018). As opposed to unintentional plagiarism, this type can be perceived as more malicious and calculated.

A third example, which is actually quite common, is paraphrasing. This occurs when the writer “make(s) minor changes and use others’ writing” (https:\\libguides.lindsey.edu). Changing the words around or using synonyms can be considered this type of plagiarism. The writer in this instance is not expressing any new ideas.

There are many tools available to GCU students to avoid plagiarism and ensure academic integrity. One way is to utilize the GCU online library and databases. Many tutorials are available through the student success center. The writing center offers help in research, writing, templates as well as faculty that are able to assist at any point in the writing process. Another way I can ensure academic integrity is by evaluating websites that are used in research as sources. Guidelines that were put forth include ensuring “Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency, and Coverage” (lc.gcumedia.com). These guidelines provide a starting point in verifying the integrity of websites that may be used for EBP.

These are just a couple of ways I can maintain my integrity through my academic growth and I look forward to exploring many more.

It is very interesting to learn that paraphrasing if not properly done can be a form of plagiarism.

The words used and the sentence structure of a paraphrase should differ from the original. Always cite the original source when paraphrasing. Some paraphrasing tips to keep in mind include:

-Studying the material and then reciting it from memory.

-Checking the original text for accuracy and avoiding copying verbatim.

-The original material’s thoughts should be expressed in your own words in the paraphrase.

Thoughts, words, or statistics that come from somewhere other than one’s thinking should be appropriately cited. Also, one should limit citations to scholarly sources.

Academic dishonesty can be avoided by correctly quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing with proper citations and references. Before submitting your paper to your instructor, use LopesWrite to check the similarity rate and revise it if it is more than 20% (or the percentage required by your instructor). Take care to properly cite all paraphrasing and quotes.

Those are great tips to correctly paraphrase. I especially like to study material then explain it in my own words without repeatedly going back to the source. It helps me to understand and retain information better.

It is unfortunate how common plagiarism is today in our schools. While researching the most common types of plagiarism, I found that one of them is called “complete plagiarism”. An example of this would be paying someone to complete your paper for you and turning it in as your own work (GrammarlyBlog, 2022). This surprised me but also did not; I remember in high school, there were some bullies that threatened other students to do their homework for them. This always made me so sad but I was too shy to speak up about it and feared getting in trouble if I was somehow involved. I now know I should anonymously told on the bullies to the teacher.

I am grateful that GCU has provided great resources about how to cite properly using APA format.

There are many types of plagiarism out there but three types of plagiarism that I have learned about are self-plagiarism, paraphrasing and direct plagiarism. Self-plagiarism is when a student or a person uses their own writing in submission for an assignment when they have already previously used that work for another assignment. This is also cheating and an act of academic dishonesty and not tolerated. Paraphrasing is a form of plagiarism that takes place when a person takes the idea or information from somebody else and paraphrases it and fails to give credit to the original owner of the idea in the reference page of the document or at the end of the paraphrase. A third example of plagiarism is when a person takes an exact quote and writes it in a document as if it is their own idea or writing and does not in text cite the original writer (Northern Illinois University 2022).

This could make the baccalaureate degree invalid and not credible, and the integrity of the baccalaureate degree is gone. This could diminish a positive outlook on the integrity of the nursing profession as a whole and make EBP have less credibility and low value. It is important to keep our integrity through honest, credible work and always cite sources and seek out honest information.

Two things I will do to ensure academic integrity of my work is always cite my sources no matter what. The second thing I will do is use writing tools such as Lopes Write and citation tools such as Citation Machine or Perdue Owl to make sure that my papers are original and have good academic integrity.

Proper citation is one of my biggest concerns. I’ll have to check out Citation Machine and Perdue Owl! And thank goodness for Lopes Write, that will help me tremendously. I am very nervous about unintentionally plagiarizing, but these tools should really help alleviate my fears.

Thank you for the extra resource ideas for Perdue Owl and Citation Machine. I looked into both of these an think they will also be beneficial.

I absolutely agree that plagiarism definitely takes away value from the nursing profession. Integrity in nursing is defined as having strong moral values and being honest as fair (Faubion, D., 2022). I believe that being honest with our work and assignment is part of having strong moral values. Plagiarism is basically considered lying about the work that you have done. Nurses would and should not be trusted if they are not honest about their work. I also use owl purdue for help with my citations as well. I have been using them as a resource since I started writing papers in high school. I also think that submitting our papers and group projects to LopesWrite is a great way to keep us accountable.

Three types of plagiarism include self-plagiarism, complete plagiarism, paraphrasing plagiarism. Self-plagiarism happens when the author resubmits work that has already been completed and used previously by that person (Student Success Center, 2022). By reusing previous work, the students’ academic growth can suffer. Being able to research and properly cite evidence-based articles/research, we as students, grow in our knowledge in the nursing profession. By self-plagiarizing, the student is hurting themselves (and potentially their patients/clients) by not staying up to date with current and relevant information. Staying educated and up to date allows the nurse to educate and care for their patients safely and effectively. Reusing the same information over and over may become harmful to a patient if new and improved interventions or treatment is available.

Staying up to date with evidence-based practice essential in caring for our patients. According to Enago Academy (2021), “While complete plagiarism represents the most serious offense, paraphrasing is the one that is the most common.” Complete plagiarism occurs when someone uses someone else’s work and/or ideas and submits them as their own. This can be done intentionally or unintentionally and is considered intellectual theft and stealing. (Enago Academy, 2021). Paraphrasing is discussing the sources work or ideas but writing them in other words. When paraphrasing, the writer should be explaining, in their own words, the authors points and facts. It is important to remember that paraphrasing still requires a citation of the original source (Student Success Center 2022). When paraphrasing, I try to read the topic or information then re-write it in my own words without referring to the original read. This way, I may not be influenced by the exact words in the original material. If I am unable to do this, I will use a direct quote and site accordingly.

A few roles in nursing are being knowledgeable, trustworthy, loyal, and a leader. “Effective leadership is rooted in ethical behavior; therefore, the element of academic integrity is a steppingstone to becoming an effective nurse leader.” (Falkner, 2022). Avoiding plagiarism while researching and keeping oneself educated, can contribute to an honest and well-rounded nurse. These nurses are at the bedside and in direct patient contact. The public perception is affected by bedside nursing; thus, a confident, knowledgeable, and honest nurse, can make a great impact on public perception.

To avoid plagiarism while ensuring my academic integrity, I plan to use Lopes Write as well as proofread my work multiple times before submitting. “LopesWrite is an electronic grammar, spelling, and citation checker tool. Any assignments that are submitted to LopesWrite will generate a report with a similarity score. The similarity score is compiled by comparing the text of the assignment against a database of sources, including the internet, other student papers, and against one’s previously submitted work (self-plagiarism).” (GCU Technical Support, 2022). Lopes Write will be beneficial in checking for self-plagiarism and complete plagiarism. Here I can edit my work to make sure my academic integrity. Proofreading my work many times can help me with grammatical errors, sentence structure and paraphrasing plagiarism. These two techniques will help ensure my work is appropriate by citing correctly and avoiding any type of plagiarism.

A Sample Answer 6 For the Assignment: NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 2

Title: NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 2

I really liked what you said about staying up to date on EBPs. Healthcare and science is in inconstant motion and if we as healthcare professionals don’t stay up with changes, we are really doing a disservice to our patients. And after all, isn’t that why we do what we do? Take care of people and the best way to day that is to learn without ceasing.

A great leader is a knowledgable leader, I agree, and when it comes to being a role model in the nursing field it is important for nurses (who are viewed as leaders in todays society) to always act with ethical behavior in order to remain trustworthy and looked to as a ethical member of the profession. When it comes to plagiarism it is important for people to recognize that it is unacceptable and of utmost importance to always use tools to safe guard against plagiarism, as well as cite the sources of the original information or content in order to give credit to the person who’s idea it was originally. Great informational post, I enjoyed reading it.

Plagiarism occurs when another person’s words or ideas are used without attribution, which may be accidental or deliberate (Khadilkar 2018). Plagiarism takes three forms: copying and pasting, minimalist paraphrasing, and patchwork (Goodwin & McCarthy, 2020). Copying and pasting is when someone takes another person’s work and presents it as their own without giving credit to the original author. The term “minimalist-paraphrasing” refers to when a student substitutes a few words for the original idea. Patchwork entails the student collecting information from a variety of sources, assembling it, and presenting it as his or her own.

Plagiarism jeopardizes the integrity of a baccalaureate degree by engendering distrust within the profession. If nursing students are not educated properly and are permitted to copy others’ work without conducting necessary research, the public will lose trust in nurses. In nursing, dishonesty is not tolerated, and maintaining high educational standards instills confidence in the profession. By conducting appropriate research, nursing students and researchers can uncover a variety of scientifically validated patient care methods. As a result, nurses can incorporate these findings into their practices in order to improve patient outcomes (Falkner, 2018).

I will spend time researching my information and citing my sources. To avoid unintentional plagiarism, I will also run my papers through Grand Canyon University’s plagiarism detection tool, lopeswrite, before submitting them to my instructor.

List three examples of plagiarism and discuss how plagiarizing as a student affects the integrity of a baccalaureate degree, the public perception of the nursing profession, and evidence-based practice. Describe two things you will do to ensure academic integrity in your work.

Nursing students are expected to uphold academic integrity when submitting materials related to assignments and even discussion questions. Failure to do that will amount to plagiarism, which is a cardinal sin in academic writing. The absence of academic integrity may be manifested in certain ways such as in direct plagiarism. The above type of plagiarism entails copying information from another writer’s work sans acknowledging that the material used came from an external source (Masic, 2019). Direct patchwork plagiarism also exists wherein one copies materials from numerous writers and proceeds to rearrange the them using citation. The last type of plagiarism is the insufficient citation of quotes whereby a nursing student will incorporate a different writer’s phrases or words within a larger paraphrased section without citing or using quotation marks.

The impact of plagiarism is far-reaching as it can affect the integrity of the degree, the perception of the profession of nursing as well as evidence-based practice. Concerning the integrity of the baccalaureate degree, instances of plagiarism may devalue it. It will impact the learning process, the grades earned as well as affect peers in the same class, which affects the quality of the degree. Further, plagiarism is not only limited to the classroom environment since it extends to the clinical environment. The reputation as well as integrity of the profession starts in the classroom and ends in the clinical setting (Carter, Hussey, & Forehand, 2019). Therefore, if they are compromised in the classroom, it follows that even the profession’s will be compromised. Incidentally, nursing is centered on evidence-based practice, which implies that the materials produced should be original to add value to the cause. For this reason, the presence of plagiarism will devalue the practice of evidence-based practice and fail to advance the phenomenon in practice.

The effects of plagiarism as discussed above imply that one needs to always endeavor to practice academic integrity. One of the most important ways of ensuring that academic integrity exists in my work will be through acknowledging borrowed ideas through proper citations (Masic, 2019). Moreover, I will endeavor to ensure originality of the work that I produce by only using other people’s ideas to advance my own ideas. Doing the above and properly referencing the cited works will make all my academic works compliant with integrity standards.

Title: NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 2

The academic integrity resource page elaborated on the misrepresentation of another person’s ideas, works, or words as one’s own, whether intentionally or not, is known as plagiarism (Academic Integrity Tutorial). A few examples of plagiarisms are as follow: Not properly quoting a borrowed sentence is plagiarism because it involves presenting someone else’s words or ideas as your own. Failing to give credit to the original source violates moral and academic standards and can lead to negative consequences such as loss of credibility and even legality. Another example of plagiarism is submitting the work of others as if it belongs to you. Such action is plagiarism because it involves presenting a person’s ideas as if they are your own. Finally, Unintentional plagiarism can still be seen as plagiarism because it involves misrepresenting something that does not belong to you as yours without proper attribution, even unintentionally. Although, plagiarism can be seen differently based on the subject matter and the context utilized, it has to do with someone taking credit for or even stealing the work of others.

A student who plagiarizes or cheats, undermines the academic integrity of a baccalaureate degree. Such student also damages the public perception of the nursing profession by showing a lack of knowledge preparedness and professionalism. Moreover, it erodes the foundation of evidence-based practice, which relies heavily on accurate and reliable sources of information. Identifying the reliability, credibility, and authenticity of the information you come across can pose a challenge. Nonetheless, there are several resources and abilities that can assist in evaluating if the information you come across is academically reliable and trustworthy (Conducting Scholarly Research Article, 2022). Citing borrowed work properly is very important and one way I plan to keep my academic integrity intact. Also, I plan on using only verified sources as another way to avoid plagiarism even unintentionally.
