Title: Identify recommendations for nursing education you believe will be most effective or radical in creating change within the industry NUR 513

Some of the recommendations for nursing education that I believe will be most effective in creating change within the industry. After referring to the report of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medication, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.

Some of the most effective in creating change within the industry. Nurses represent the largest population of healthcare professionals, nurses making up such a big population of healthcare professionals they can manage healthcare teams and join clinical care, public health, and social services. Nurses have a very important role in achieving health equity. For nurses to achieve that goal, they need more education and a healthcare system that will support a work environment and autonomy. Nurses need to conduct research for nursing professionals to help build a culture of health, reduce disparities in people, and help them achieve health equality (National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021).

Nursing can have a big impact on social determinants of Health (SDOH). Nurses can bring about change in the clinical setting by learning about their community finding social determinants and making changes to help bring about better health equality. Nurses can help bring about change in their organization by learning about the organization’s policies for SDOH and advocating for changes to help social determinants (Scowart, 2023). Nurses can advocate and support organization strategies to implement SDOH. Nurses can also bring together other healthcare organizations to make decisions with patients to see if they are willing to talk about their SDOH. If nurses could get patients to talk about their SDOH they could bring about great changes to help patients overcome or bring about some level of change for their social determinants of health.

I do agree with the reports and how they describe the evolution of the advanced practice registered nurse’s role. The reason that I agree, is because APRNs, can bring about greater specialty areas such as midwives, and nurse practitioners it can help bring healthcare teams to rural areas that do not have physicians. APRNs have worked with patients and can research and find the communities’ SDOH and take their healthcare concerns to the stakeholders to bring about the greatest change.

This class provides a great foundation to many elements that will be needed throughout your MSN program. APA format is one of these. To assist you with APA requirements I will post an optional discussion opportunity related to APA format. Substantive responses (remember substantive responses should be at least 100 words long), will help meet the weekly participation requirements. I hope that you will take advantage of these discussion opportunities to enhance your learning and skills related to APA format.

Provide a one or two sentence answer to this question: What is your experience with using the APA Style Guide for formatting your assignments? Then, share a link to an APA formatting guideline that you found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Select a guideline that you expect to use each week, or one that you are concerned about learning because the formatting seems difficult. Along with the link, write a few sentences about why you chose it and how you plan to gain skill with using it. Look at your peers’ posts and try to select a different guideline so that a wide variety of them can be covered.

I have been using APA style formatting for my BSN papers, the only different is I use the lower edition of APA style template before, now MSN program are requiring to use 7th edition, I have noticed some different from the formatting like when citation more than three authors, now can be shorter, (last name et al). It is very straight forward for the APA style since it can be downloaded from the GCU website student success center or writing center and you can search APA 7th edition; There are two version of the APA templates, one is with abstract and the other do not. I am so used to use the GCU writing center since my past experience. In the Citing sources in APA 7th edition literally listed the what’s new in APA and guidelines, it is an easy way to formatting your papers. For recommendation are download the 7th edition guidelines and the 7th edition templates on your laptops, use it whenever the class assignment requires for APA style. For the citing sources in APA 7th edition is location in wring center.

I have profound knowledge and experience in regards to the application of the APA Style. In all my academic writings during my undergraduate studies, the APA Style was among the requirements. Additionally, I have incorporated this writing in my professional writing. As such, the APA Style is one that I not only understand its basics but also one that I am comfortable and enjoy using.

Below are the links for the APA formatting guideline as provided:

Guide and templates;

Although I emphasize on my knowledge and experience of this writing style, I was surprised to learn new guidelines from the resources provided. For instance, I now understand that I am required to abide by the requirements of the APA 7th Edition Style. One particular guideline that I will be applying throughout the duration of this course and in future writing is the proper formatting and the application of the abbreviations such as et al. in in-text citations.

I have had experience with APA Style Guide for formatting assignments when I was working on my BSN over 10 years ago. Since it has been so long, it may take me a moment to feel confident again. The link I choose is APA 7th Edition Style Guide https://www.gcumedia.com/lms-resources/student-success-center-content/documents/tools/apa/Writing%20Center_Style_APA_7th_Edition_Style_Guide.docx. I choose this link because it has been so long since I have written papers and it includes a nice overview and easy way to navigate all of the different areas of formatting. I will be referring to it frequently. I really like how it has specific examples of different references. I think this will be the most challenging area to get used to again. A couple items that have changed since I last used APA is only using one space after sentences and using “they” as a singular pronoun. I think it will benefit me to purchase a book to refer to also. Having a tangible book to flip through may be helpful in addition to all of the links provided.

My experience with using APA style is, shall we say, dusty. Having not been in school in over 20 years, I haven’t used APA style in quite some time. I am finding the APA style writing guide available through the GCU Student Success Center to be helpful. I like the way it is laid out and the explanations are clearly communicated. That being said, I plan to review all of the guides offered to increase my comfort level with using APA formatting.

I may need more help than usual with APA format and checking for plagiarism. I don’t apply it in my work so it is becoming h.

arder to use as part of this MSN program. I also hope there is a plagiarism checker. I remember that when I have an orientation, I was told that LOPE provides a plagiarism checker. I haven’t used it yet but I’m planning to. I just need to learn to navigate those resources effectively. Thank you.

I am planning to use these resources in accomplisihng requirements for the MSN program.

I would say that I am fairly experienced with APA since I used it for all of my papers in my undergraduate program, but it has been quite some time since using it. I remember the basics of APA, but I have been having to use resources to verify that my APA format is correct.

Reference Examples – Citing Sources in APA 7th Edition – Research Guides at Grand Canyon University (gcu.edu)

I chose this link because I learn best by looking at specific examples. When it comes to using citations within APA, there are so many different variables that can slightly change how something is cited. Since it has been years since I have used APA format, I will be using this link every time I use in-text citations to verify that my work is done correctly.

What is your experience with using the APA Style Guide for formatting your assignments?

In GCU, the recommended format is APA style. I had no prior experience using style. In fact, having obtained my BSN from a foreign school in 1996, we don’t have strict formatting rules in undergraduate studies. If we must write essays, we just follow simple paragraph rules with minimal focus on citations. So writing assignments using the APA format has been a challenge for me so far. I needed to triple-check my writing before I upload it for submission to ensure that I did not miss any punctuation, upper or lower case letters, or correct citation and reference formats.

The consensus report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity recommends several recommendations and domains for the education of future and present nurses to improve the overall delivery of care to patients in any population. The domains listed are “fundamental content that the committee believes can no longer be covered in public health courses alone, but need to be incorporated and applied by nursing students throughout nursing curricula. All nurses, regardless of setting or type of nursing, need to understand and be prepared to address the underlying barriers to better health in their practice” (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). The domains include; health and healthcare equity, social determinants of health (SDOH), social needs, social justice, implicit bias, ethics, population and environmental health, disasters or public health emergencies, discrimination such as racism, ageism, classism, and sexism, and nurse well being (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). Although I feel that all the domains are important to the education of nurses and improvement of care delivery, the most important to me and my nursing experience is social determinants of health.

I am from a small rural town in the Mississippi Delta, where the largest population that I care for are African American and are considered impoverished. Throughout the years I have worked with others in the healthcare field that travel to this area to work, and they are not conscious of the inequities and culture of the population. When you have not had to choose between eating a meal, paying a bill, or buying medicine, it is hard to understand the difference between survival and noncompliance.

By understanding the SDOH in a particular population, you are better able to assess a patients’ needs better and communicate different options to care to the patient that will allow them to participate in developing a plan that they are more capable of being compliant with. Also, you will have a better understanding of the needs of the patient and refer to sources that may be able to assist in patient compliance with treatment. I have learned that most patients will not tell you of their financial concerns or lack of family support. You must tailor your assessment in a way that provides patient comfort and safety and this will promote a conversation between patient and nurse that is more beneficial and effective.

Nurses are on the frontline of healthcare. The nurse is the first person that a patient interacts with. The nurse’s patient approach must convey a sense of comfort and trust. Nurse education is the key to improving the delivery and effectiveness of care. “The shift in nursing education from hospital-based diploma programs to degrees from colleges and universities has prepared RNs for more highly skilled roles that have expanded their reach and impact, benefiting both nurses and their employers” (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). I agree with this statement. Nursing started out as, for lack of a better term, “glorified housekeepers.” Today, the role of the nurse impacts every facet of the healthcare industry, including direct patient care, health administration, research, and technology development and implementation.

Title: Identify recommendations for nursing education you believe will be most effective or radical in creating change within the industry NUR 513

As is discussed in The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, there are many recommendations as to how we can improve nursing education. Specifically, it discusses how to address the social determinants of health (SDOH), advancing health equity and improving population health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). The author identifies ways to do this including new competencies, new types of learning, and recruiting diverse students and faculty to better resemble the patient population (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 2021).

The report of The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, is an important document that describes how nurses can transform the healthcare industry. It provides recommendations for nursing education, which will help nurses to provide essential care in a changing population. The identified  recommendations will be most effective in creating change within the industry increasing the number of primary care providers and making registered nurses accountable for the outcomes of their patients (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 2021).

One recommendation for improving nursing education is to increase research funding for post-secondary institutions. The National Academies believe this would help advance research on health disparities and improve outcomes for patients who are under served by health care providers. I agree with this recommendation because it will benefit students who want to pursue advanced degrees. It would also help change nursing education meaningfully so as to produce nurses who are prepared to meet the challenges of the industry in the decade ahead. Research funding can assist nurses without specialty in informatics to understand how analysis of massive datasets can impact health (Forman, R. et al, 2020). In the coming decade, it will be essential for nursing education to evolve in order to prepare nurses who can meet the challenges articulated in this report with regards to addressing social determinants of health (SDOH), improving population health, and promoting health equity and this can be feasible through research funding.
