Therefore, this essay examines the scope of my future role as a nurse informaticist, professional organizations that will affect my scope, and evolving issues that are likely to affect my practice.

Scope of my Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse

My future role as an advanced registered nurse is nurse informaticist. Nurse informaticists are nurses who have advanced knowledge and skills in the use of informatics in healthcare. The scope of practice of nurse informaticists is broad. Accordingly, nurse informaticists integrate information management as well as analytical sciences into nursing science. The aim of integrating information from the above disciplines is to understand, define, and communicate the ways in which technology-related data can be used to inform nursing practice. Sharing of information entails the use of EMR systems that are associated with the challenge of maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of data. The use of EMR systems raise ethical issues related to protection of data integrity by health organizations. The implication of the above on my future practice is the increased need for the adoption of EMR systems that uphold data integrity. I also have the responsibility of assisting the organizations that I will be working in the future select effective and efficient systems to ensure meaningful use of data. The other emerging issue that is likely to affect my future scope of practice is the increased use of health technologies to provide personalized patient-care. Health technologies such as Telehealth have largely been embraced to promote patient-centered, continuity in care, and efficiency. However, the technologies raise ethical concerns about the safety and integrity of the patient data (Kleib et al., 2021). Therefore, I will have the responsibility of ensuring the safe and efficient use of health technologies in addressing the health needs of the diverse patient populations.

Professional organizations and associations are a vital component of care provision for nurses, especially nurse practitioners who wish to change the scope of their future practice. The increasing role of nurse leaders implores them to be members of professional organizations to enhance their care practice and ensure that they understand different aspects of the healthcare industry, particularly in advocacy and being voice of change. Healthcare policies by their nature are political processes that require lobbying and effective leadership skills. Further, nurse leaders require leadership skills that will endure them to subordinates and help inspire them to deliver quality care (Sherman & Saifman, 2018). Therefore, professional organizations offer a platform and forum for nurse leaders to horn new skills, articulate their concerns, and understand changing regulatory environment, not just for nurses but also patients. professional organizations allow nurse leaders and practitioners to exchange ideas for better and improved practice and offer a platform to interact with peers for increased motivation.

Three of the most influential and prominent organizations for nurse leaders include the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. Founded in 1896, the American Nurses Association has membership in all 50 states and is the largest voice for the nursing profession. All nurses, including nurse leaders are members of this national professional organization (ANA, n.d.). The ANA was created to help nurses foster high standards of nursing practice, promote safe and ethical work environment and practice, bolster the health and wellness of nurse practitioners and advocate for their issues at all levels. The ANA assists nurses attain their highest level of potential as it encourages lifelong learning and acquisition of knowledge through seminar, webinars, conferences, and research publications through its different platforms like journals and websites. Nurse leaders join the association to help increase the voice of the nursing profession on a host of healthcare issues.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is a national organization formed to empower all nurse practitioners (NP) to advance quality healthcare through practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership. The organization provides NPs with information, tools and resources that allow them to shape the healthcare system and offer quality care (AANP, 2020). As nurse leaders, NPs are expected to integrate evidence-based practice interventions into their care practices and focus on quality delivery. The AANP encourages its members to seek lifelong learning and assume complex roles as equal partners in care provision in different practice settings.

The American Organization for Nursing Leadership is a national professional entity of more than 10,000 nurse leaders which voices issues concerning nurse leaders in different aspects of their care delivery and leadership roles. With a mission to shape health care through innovative and expert nursing leadership, the organization provide a voice for nurse leaders to advance health for populations and patients in different areas (AONL, 2020). The association focuses on three areas that include promoting professional development for nurse leaders through education, supporting policy for nurse leaders through advocacy, and ensuring that nurse leaders are members of a diverse community through their membership in the organization.

Based on these aspects, being a member of all these organizations is fundamental in delivery of quality and patient-centered care. Nurses by virtue of their profession are members of ANA and due to specialty different associations. In this regard, I am a member of both ANA and AANP and would like to join the American Organization for Nursing Leadership as its goals and mission fit into my worldview and philosophy of care. I believe in holistic care that integrates different aspects of an individual’s foundation, especially cultural, spiritual and religious components. As observed, the organization promotes the reshaping of healthcare delivery with aligns with efforts to reform care provision in current healthcare environment. membership to the organization will enhance my practice as it will provide an opportunity to interact with nurse leaders, gain new skills and approaches and voice concerns to improve care delivery in clinical settings and practice environment.

Controversial or Evolving Issue to Affect Scope of Practice or Role

The evolving controversial issue in nursing profession remains the need to have expanded practice or full authority for nurse practitioners. With more than half of states in the country granting full practice authority, nurses and professional associations continue to advocate for increased authority so that nurses become equal partners in primary care provision to meet the increasing demands. Full practice authority will allow nurse leaders to offer effective leadership direction for nurse practitioners and increase their roles and scope to evaluate, diagnose and order as well as interpret diagnostic tests and provide treatment (Chesney & Duderstadt, 2017). Through the expanded authority, nurses can prescribe medications based on state regulations.

Legislations in different states continue to restrict or reduce the scope of practice for nurse. Secondly, the fight between medical associations and nursing organizations remains a core aspect of the current issue on the need to grant full practice authority. Increasing healthcare demands and a physician shortage should be essential factors that legislations consider in granting full practice authority. Allowing nurse practitioners and leaders to practice independently will address some of these issues (Dillon & Gary, 2017). State boards should set programs to enable transition by practitioners, especially newly graduated nurses. The key to successful transition is to understand when a nurse can turn to in time of need and their capabilities.

Conclusion

The increasing role of nurses implore health care entities and organizations to appreciate their critical part in care delivery and provision. Future scope of practice for nurse leaders is to enhance quality care delivery and use evidence-based practice interventions. Professional associations are an essential component of better care delivery in all settings for nurse practitioners and leaders in their future roles.

Nurses play a crucial role in providing care that address the needs of their diverse populations. In doing so, they ensure that their actions align with those stipulated in their scopes of practice. Nurses’ scope of practice provide insights into what nurses can and cannot do in the provision of patient care. Nursing specialties have different scopes of practice that ensures uniqueness and elimination of potential task and role duplication in the patient care process. Therefore, this paper explores my future scope of practice as a public health nurse, professional nursing organizations that influence my scope, and an evolving issue that will likely to affect my future role.

Scope of my Future Role

My future role is a public health nurse. Public health nurses are professionals trained and specialized in the practice of protecting and promoting the optimum health of their populations using knowledge from public health, nursing, and social sciences. Public health nurses have a scope of practice that guides their roles in the promotion of public health. One of the aspects of their scope is assessment (Dieckmann, 2021). Public health nurses collect data about the health status and needs of their populations. They utilize both subjective and objective methods of assessment to ensure the accuracy of the data obtained on issues affecting public health. The other aspect of their scope entails population diagnosis. They utilize the obtained data to develop actual and potential diagnoses that reflect the health needs of their populations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2021). The diagnoses help in prioritizing the strategies needed and resource allocation to address the identified public health needs.

The scope of public health nurses also includes outcome identification. They utilize the developed diagnoses to come up with expected outcomes that relate to actual or potential needs of the public (Healthcare, 2022). The developed outcomes should be specific, realistic, timebound, measurable, and achievable. The other scope of practice for public health nurses is planning and implementation. They utilize the obtained data and nursing diagnoses to develop strategies that can facilitate the realization of the optimum outcomes of the public (Campbell et al., 2020). In addition, they adopt interprofessional collaboration in implementing the strategies for sustained changes in the population. Public health nurses also educate the public, as part of their scope of their practice. They educate and counsel the population about health risks and ways of living healthy lifestyles in their communities. The additional roles contained in the scope of practice for public health nurses include treatment, reporting, care coordination, strategy evaluation, research, and consultation with other healthcare providers to meet the diverse needs of their populations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2019).

A nurse who intends to be a public health nurse should be a registered nurse with a board of nursing. The nurse should also have experience of at least five years in nursing. A Certificate in Public Health (CPH) is mandatory for one to practice as a public health nurse. The National Board of Public Health Examiners certifies nurses interested in this role. Nurses submit their application and undertake an exam to test their competencies and suitability for the role. Once passed, the institution issues a certification for use in playing public health role in any state in America.

Three Professional Nursing Organizations

Several professional nursing organizations influence the advanced nursing roles for public health nurses. One of these associations is the Association of Public Health Nurses (APHN). APHN is an organization for all the public health nurses in the USA. The organization strives to ensuring diversity, inclusion, equity, and evidence-based practices in addressing public health needs. The organization’s members engage in local, regional, and national collaborative practices to ensure optimum public health through excellence in the practice of public health nursing. APHN provides its members opportunities that include annual national conferences, periodic webinars, leadership development, networking, and advancement of policy proposals on issues affecting public health nursing (APHN, n.d.). The organization’s activities mainly aim at advocating practices and policies that advance public health nursing practice for public’s health.

The other association that influences the advanced nursing roles for public health nurses is American Public Health Association (APHA). APHA is an institution established to champion the health of all communities and populations in America. It exists to strengthen public health nursing profession and speak for public health issues. The association encourages its members to develop policies to address public health issues using science-based interventions. The organization’s mission is to improve public health and promote equity in health status of the diverse populations. Its mission is to create a healthy nation in one generation. Members of APHA enjoy opportunities such as education, professional development, networking, and advocacy for policy issues that contribute to their personal and professional development (APHA, n.d.).

The last association that influences the advanced nursing roles for public health nurses is Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations. Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations is an organization and a coalition of America’s leading public health nursing professionals and organizations. The organization strengthens public health nursing as a specialty in nursing. It also strengthens excellence in public health nursing practice, leadership, research, and education. It also acts as an advocate for local, regional, national, and international policies that aim at improving public health. The organization’s mission is to ensure robust, inclusive, and equitable health for all the populations through leadership and skills of public health nurses. The organization’s mission is to act as a body uniting and amplifying the voice of public health nurses and expanding their impact and influence for equitable health for all populations (Cphno.org, n.d.).

One I Would Most Like to Join

I am most likely to join the Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations. The organization comprises all the public health nursing organizations in the USA. It provides a large pool of public health professionals, implying an extensive networking potential for its members. The organization’s mission and vision also align with my worldview. I believe that public health nurses have an immense impact on public health. They play crucial roles in eliminating potential disease burden in the population through their health promotion and prevention roles. I also believe ensuring equity in the access to and utilization of public health services by the population. Public health nurses should impart their influence on public health using evidence-based interventions. My membership in this organization will improve my practice in some ways. First, it will provide me with extensive networking opportunities. It will also improve my advocacy knowledge and skills as a public health nurse (Cphno.org, n.d.). I will also broaden my knowledge and skills in public health nursing through its activities such as annual conferences and regular webinars.

Evolving Issue

An evolving issue that is likely to affect my scope or practice as a public health nurse is the emergence of new health problems. Public health nurses play crucial roles in the prevention, promotion, and detection of communicable health problems in their communities. They utilize interventions such as community diagnoses to identify and prevent further spread of diseases at community levels (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2019). However, the emergence of new infections such as Covid19 will transform the roles of public health nurses in promoting public’s health. Covid19 increased the need for public health nurses to play a proactive role in activities such as research, treatment, and public empowerment to prevent disease spread and promote public health. Emerging diseases also increase the need for active interprofessional collaboration for effective coordination of care. Public health nurses and other healthcare providers have to collaborate in ensuring disease surveillance, management, and elimination of potential channels of spread in the population (Jackson et al., 2020). Therefore, considering the impacts of covid19, public health nurses should embrace evidence-based interventions to predict, monitor, and prevent the spread of emerging diseases in their populations.

Conclusion

My future practice role is being a public health nurse. Public health nurses have a scope of practice that encompasses assessment of public health needs, community diagnosis, planning, coordinating care, implementing, treating, and educating communities on ways to promote their health and prevent illnesses. Professional associations affect the roles of advanced public health nurses. I am most likely to join the Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations since its mission and vision align with my worldview. Evolving issues such as the emergence of new communicable diseases are likely to transform the roles of public health nurses. Therefore, they should strive to ensure the existence of evidence-based strategies that are responsive to actual and potential health issues affecting their populations.

Scope of My Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse

A CNL takes the role of a leader in healthcare delivery systems in which patient care is provided. Unlike the scope of APRNs, the scope of practice for CNLs is restricted in the aspects of the clinical duties in direct patient care. The AACN defines the scope of the CNL as being a clinical leader at the point of patient care (King et al., 2020). The CNL scope entails various aspects of patient care, including care coordination, transitions of care, outcomes measurement, team leadership, interprofessional communication, risk assessment, implementation of best intervention based on evidence, and quality improvement (King et al., 2020). Furthermore, it’s the role of the CNL to link direct nursing care with the modern, multifaceted, data-driven healthcare delivery systems. The CNL addresses the patients’ needs while transforming care practices to improve the care provided to all patients. Although the scope of the CNL entails overseeing the lateral implementation of care for a group of patients, they also actively take part in delivering direct health care in complex patient care situations.

The scope of practice for CNLs further entails taking part in collaborative care for patients by being part of the interprofessional healthcare teams. The CNLs head the interprofessional team, and their duties entail planning, organizing, and communicating patient care with members of the team (Bender, 2016). Besides, the CNL supervises the care provided by the team and delegates duties pertaining to patient care within the patient care team (Bender, 2016). Joining AONL will be essential to help me land on the right path and achieve my career goals. Furthermore, since CNLs are the leaders of interprofessional teams, I can lead and influence other providers to research and create innovative ways of improving healthcare delivery and improving patients’ outcomes. Being a member of AONL will help me network with other CNLs as it creates a networking platform where CNLs interact and share their diverse views and embrace new ideas.

Controversial or Evolving Issue That Is Likely To Affect the CNL Scope of Practice

Evidence-based management (EBM) is an evolving issue that is most likely to affect my scope of practice as a CNL. EBM is an evolving practice among healthcare leaders and is much more promising among nurse leaders (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). EBM has its origin in evidence-based nursing practice (EBP), which has developed to reflect the use of the best scientific evidence in addition to nurse’s professional judgment, clinical expertise, and the patient’s preferences. Similar to EBP, EBM decision-making entails an organized application of the best available scientific evidence in addition to organizational evidence, leaders’ professional experience, and stakeholder evidence to decision-making (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). Nurse leaders have been termed as one of the current determinants in adopting EBP. CNLs that create a vision and a culture to support EBP become more successful in accomplishing quality patient outcomes.

EBM is likely to influence nursing practice and other stakeholders since CNLs will be required to apply EBM decision-making to access data and stakeholder information and evaluate the nursing practice environment. CNLs will be able to identify opportunities to enhance the nurse practice environment by evaluating a large evidence base of interventions to develop healthy work environments (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). Furthermore, CNLs will be required to build on their knowledge of EBP to create a broader use of evidence in their management decision-making. Consequently, CNL will have to develop EBM practice competencies through continuous education programs (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). This will enable them to increase their knowledge of EBP and apply it in management and leadership decision-making. EBM matters to the advanced registered nurse because they can apply it to create a culture of inquiry that uses the best available evidence (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). As a result, advanced registered nurses can promote successful outcomes that support the healthcare environment, organizational success, and health care outcomes.

Conclusion

CNLs are advanced registered nurses equipped with advanced nursing knowledge but do not meet APRNs’ scope of practice. The scope of CNLs is limited to direct patient care. It entails facilitating collaborative patient care, overseeing the interprofessional team’s care, evaluating patient risks, outcomes, and care plans, coordinating direct care activities by nurses, and providing lateral integration of healthcare services. The scope of CNLs is defined by the AACN, which also provides certification exams. Professional nursing organizations that are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing include the AACN, AONL, and ANA. The organizations act as the voice for nurse leaders and provide opportunities for professional development and networking. An evolving issue that might affect my scope in the future is the use of EBM since CNLs will be required to apply evidence to inform management decisions. CNLs can make evidence-based decisions to select the most appropriate interventions to improve the work environment and include them in the organizational strategic plan.
