PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES

Personal Leadership Philosophies

These are unique principles that every person in leadership should have and present to their team to follow. These philosophies are critical since they can help guide one through hard moments by making significant and small decisions since these philosophers help act as unwritten policies once shared in the team (Andrews, 2016). Several people struggle to understand the type and kind of leaders they are as well as their leadership identity. Therefore, this writing piece will help explore and discover my philosophies in leadership by having a deep reflection on my core values, mission statement, and Clifton strengths assessments, and creating a plan of development to help accomplish my vision.

Core Values

Core values help to dictate the principles of leadership behavior. One of the most outstanding qualities nurses need to have is the quality of care. This is what unites nurses and patients and transforms the nursing profession. Thus, caring is deemed a core value for the nurses who are practicing it holistically. It helps in promoting health and healing among patients. Nonetheless, nurse leaders must have caring quality because caring is a quality that needs to be applied to the patient and the team members who are continually helping to achieve the patient goals (Laird-Magee, Gayle & Preiss, 2015).

Another core value that is part of me is diversity. I have been practicing this value every day in my life, both at home and at work. This is because diversity helps to enhance individual creativity and provide insights into the culture. It helps to remind me every moment that in nursing, it’s not a matter of one size fits it all. Awareness of diversity is critical in the nursing profession since it helps to acknowledge and appreciate differences in individual’s attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, and priorities in individuals’ health-seeking behaviors in the population (Dyess, Prestia & Smith, 2015).

Awareness of diversity is critical in the nursing profession since it helps nurses acknowledge and appreciate the existence of differences in the community. This helps to reflect the nursing profession’s contract with society and the sole responsibility nurses have to act per the robust code of ethics that guides the nursing profession. This helps the nurses be aware of their attitudes, thoughts, priorities, and beliefs while providing care to individual patients, their families, and the entire community (Zambrano, 2019). Several pieces of training are ongoing that helps to ensure critical patient quality service care is provided. It is important to note that essential healthcare issues are increasing, such as healthcare service costs, complexities of regulations, shortages of labor in hospitals, comorbidities associated with old age, and thoughts in solving these problems. In doing so, leaders must be able to develop new consciousness in helping them approach and solve healthcare problems (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

Vision/Mission Statement

I had to reflect and do inner searching on myself for my core purpose to help in identifying my vision and mission as a professional nurse. My mission as a nurse in the profession is to devote my entire life to providing quality and compassionate health care services to every patient, family, and community (Zambrano, 2019). This will be provided through excellence in good leadership, education, and professional practice. I appreciate the differences among people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, celebrate diverse perspectives, and embrace the differences between ideas. As an individual, I am thoroughly committed to providing the highest quality care that is individualized and educates to promote the health of the individuals and the entire society.

Clifton Strengths Assessment Results

NURS 6053 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES
NURS 6053 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES

My top themes from the Clifton strength assessment result can be summarized into: deliberative, analytical, relator, individualization, and intellection. The theme of deliberative informs me that I am a person who is serious and private and likes careful and deep thinking. Besides, it indicates that I let other people begin a conversation, and I listen to them, observe and keep thoughts to myself (Zambrano, 2019).

Behaviors to Strengthen

I am a person who is known to be quiet among many people. Because of this, people have often mistaken my quietness for being “shy.” And unable to initiate interactions. However, my siblings do describe me accurately as being a reserved person. Besides, my reservation has been able to make limit my list of friends. As a social being, this has worked against me in several situations, both at home and hospital setting. Secondly, I am known to be “hot-tempered” by both colleagues and family members. This has made people develop fear and choose what they want to discuss with me. Because of this character, only a few people have been able to understand me. Therefore, these two behaviors are in my list of actions that need to be changed and strengthened to help cope with patients’ and colleagues’ diverse environment (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

Development Plan

This character of being “reserved” has made people underrate me. Therefore, I would like to improve this behavior and find ways to enable other people in my environment to understand me better. To achieve my vision and mission in the nursing profession, I will be forced to practice modern nursing evidence-based practice. I need to acknowledge that nursing goes beyond the patient, and the family members are equally affected by the patient illness. Therefore, I need to plan for diverse care that will be holistic. For example, family members need to be incorporated into care to ensure that their anxiety is alleviated.

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Besides providing safe, high-quality, and evidence-based clinical care, registered nurses must demonstrate effective leadership and management skills in different situations. Regardless of their position, the nurse is expected to promote staff and patient satisfaction, coordinate interprofessional care activities for the patients, manage limited resources, actively manage change, and promote evidence-based care (Cherry & Jacob, 2019). Therefore, nurse leaders must possess various traits to perform their roles well. These traits could be learned and adapted over time or personality characteristics of the nurse leader. Additionally, an effective leader must have a leadership philosophy and a belief system guiding decision-making. This paper will analyze my personal leadership philosophy, describing my core values, mission and vision statement, and the behaviors I would wish to strengthen.

Core Values

An effective leader must possess admirable traits and core values. Some of my values include self-confidence, decisiveness, emotional stability, people skills, trustworthiness, eagerness to accept responsibility, and perseverance. Vilma (2018) states that leaders are extremely self-assured because they are confident in themselves, making followers begin to share in this self-belief. Group members must be able to trust and depend upon the person leading them (Smikle, 2019). Strong leaders also take on responsibility and do not pass the blame to others, taking ownership of their mistakes and standing by their success. In addition, an effective leader possesses excellent interpersonal skills, paying attention and genuinely caring about helping followers succeed. A strong leader makes sound decisions and is confident in their choices, and they can avoid overreactions and control their emotions. These are the core values I possess, making me more confident that I am an effective leader.

Mission and Vision Statement

In a vision and mission statement, one encapsulates everything they would desire to achieve, defining what excellence and success look like to an individual. My mission is to apply the abilities and skills I possess as a nurse to support and provide inspiration to colleagues and positively transform healthcare in my community. My vision statement is “To create a community where everyone contributes to their fullest potential, providing culturally competent, compassionate, and excellent care to all while promoting community mental and physical wellness.

Analysis of Clifton Strengths Assessment

The Clifton Strengths assessment tool describes my profile as a learner, relator, achiever, focused, and strategic individual (Gallup, 2019). This evaluation is a true reflection of whom I am. Focus enables me to be assertive, making me direct in my dealings without becoming aggressive or overly pushy. Focus also enables me to streamline my goals, which is crucial for longevity and consistency. Amir et al. (2019) note that avoiding undertaking too many tasks at a time prevents nurse burnout. This strategy works in tandem with focus. After identifying and prioritizing where to place my efforts, I strategize the best way to attain the goals, making me an achiever. As a relator, I can interact well with team members and other leaders. Lastly, I possess a strong desire to succeed and commit to helping my groups reach different milestones.

A Description of Key Behaviors to Strengthen and a Development Plan

Healthcare professionals work in a culturally diverse society. Nurses must provide care to individuals with different values, beliefs, and perceptions of illness and health. Therefore, healthcare professionals must provide culturally competent care to all individuals. One of the areas I would like to improve is communicating with culturally diverse individuals. Effective communication is a foundational component that enhances the professional image of nurses while building strong relationships with colleagues and patients (Sibiya, 2019). One strategy I will use to achieve this is learning other languages, particularly the common courteous words in a language. I would also use mobile applications to learn sign language and the meaning of nonverbal cues of communication in other cultures. By acquiring these skills, I would be able to connect with more diverse communities, improve my interaction with various people, and effect positive change in care delivery in various settings.

The second area I would like to improve is my stress management strategies. An effective leader must not get stuck in a rut but be able to adapt quickly to changing situations. Stress is also identified as a significant prelude to burnout. As nurses maintain their relationships and tackle various critical issues as caregivers, they must develop efficient strategies to manage their anxiety and stress effectively. Failure to manage stress can have detrimental effects on caregivers’ physical and mental wellness, reducing their ability to fulfil their roles well. With nursing being one of the most stressful occupations, it is common to find burnout among nurses, affecting their productivity, performance, and personality at work (de Oliveira et al., 2019). Actions to reduce stress are of vital essence to preventing burnout. To manage my stress better, I will utilize self-reflection practices, incorporate physical exercises and leisure activities in my weekly schedules, and minimize stressors as much as possible. I will also be planning ahead of time and breaking goals into smaller tasks to promote my time utilization and increase my focus.

Conclusion NURS 6053 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES

Leadership is an integral component in all parts of our society. Leadership is essential in ensuring activities run smoothly and goals are achieved in the healthcare sector, providing safe and high-quality care to patients. A personal leadership philosophy strengthens a leader’s skills, enabling them to be effective in their duties and responsibilities

The core values of a leader are what determine the personal leadership philosophy of a leader. I believe that good leaders tend to have a set of unique characteristics that drive the way they act, their decision-making process, and the level of influence that they have on their followers (Laureate Education 2014). Therefore, my personal leadership philosophy is driven by a set of values that determine my underlying beliefs and guide my decision-making process and the actions that ultimately shape my daily routine and my career goals (Cortellazzo et al., 2019). Notably, one of the values that drives my personal leadership philosophy is the elements of empowerment and development.

I view leadership as a position of power. For this reason, as opposed to keeping the power and control to myself, I strive to ensure that I empower others and motivate them to amplify their own impact as well. Some of the strategies that I use to ensure empowerment include actions such as formal training of employees through mentorship and delegation of responsibilities. Another key value in my personal leadership philosophy is the element of communication. I believe that communication is a powerful tool of a leader and is the foundation for a relationship. In the work setting, centering communication enables communication of contexts to the team and fellow employees (Khan et al., 2020). It aids in ensuring that clear and concise expectations are set for the employees. In addition, it forms the basis for the provision and setting of constructive feedback both within and outside the work setting.

The mission and vision are the core elements of my leadership values. My personal leadership mission statement defines my purpose and objectives as a leader. It aids in illustrating my role and existence to my followers and to the organization. Similarly, my mission statement defines my purpose as a leader. The vision statement focus on my personal goals and aspirations as a leader (Roupnel et al., 2019). The vision and the mission statements are meant to ensure that my leadership approach remains uplifting and inspiring. My personal vision and mission statement are:

Vision: To continue working towards becoming the leader that I would wish to work for. I have to lead by being an example and integrating open communication while investing in my employees and followers. I will aid the organization in attaining its goals.

Mission: To serve as a leader by encouraging the development of innovative ideas and forward-thinking to ensure that my team can bring about technology solutions that will enhance and improve other people’s lives.

Based on the CliftonStrengths assessment, I tend to employ the qualities of restorative theme due to my ability to develop solutions to problems that arise. I strive to ensure that I refer to information sources and consult materials such as publications in order to overcome the challenges that I encounter both in the work setting and in my personal life. I am constantly in search of ways that would best make me a better person and a better leader. For this reason, I would wish that other people learn from me about the need to investigate a situation at hand. This means that it is in the best interest to learn from the failures and challenges experienced. Also, I tend to be a learner, given that I strive to acquire additional knowledge and skills from the daily experiences and interactions within and out of the work setting. I tend to persevere to the point where I acquire the skills and knowledge needed to attain a goal. I tend to look into the future and the best way to have the best outcome through present actions and decisions on the futuristic theme. The theme of connectedness manifests in the element of generosity that I show to people. I believe that this is the strategy that will aid in motivating and influencing other people to perform good deeds. Lastly, as a relator, I seek to form positive relationships with those that I interact with to get the best out of the interaction.

Two key behaviors that I intend to strengthen include the qualities of supportive and participative leadership. The two behaviors will best aid in ensuring that I lead by example and that I am able to provide the right guidance to my employees. The strategies that I plan to use to improve on these behaviors are through online tutorials and enrolling in classes that will aid in improving the two aspects. I will enroll in evening classes and attend training sessions in the health facility that I work for to improve on the two aspects of leadership. Upon completion of the classes for three months, I will have a certificate and will be able to exercise the two qualities with ease. Online training will be based on a wide variety of sources and the contributions from accomplished leaders in the health sector (Khan et al., 2020). Being participative as a leader is motivating to the other employees and improves the level of performance in the health organization.

Interesting Amanda and I agreed with your point 100%. An excellent communication skills is a good attributes of a great leader and I believe that for us to lead our team we must all strive to develop our communication skills.  Effective communication is essential to the management of any relationship, but they are in particular crucial to a nurse leader who is required to engage in a wide range of relationships. According to (Nichols et al., 2022).communication is the basis of the practice of nursing. Communication skills are crucial for the work of the nurse and any other nurse. Through the development of good communication skills, the nurse can get information, convey a plan, assign, and asses a care plan. The nurse interacts and develops relationships with co-workers, patients, and their families as well as other healthcare professionals and leaders. Both relationship building and effective communication are important for moving toward and achieving a common goal as well as resolving conflicts. Therefore, as frontline workers in healthcare, nurses rely on communication for all aspects of their jobs. Strong verbal and written communication skills are central to improving health outcomes, fostering relationships with co-workers, patients and families, and navigating complex situations. Advancing in the field of nursing involves developing leadership skills and cross-cultural competencies needed to work with diverse populations of patients, families and colleagues

Reflecting on one’s strengths and core values is an essential aspect of being a leader, and using these reflections identifies and fills gaps to strengthen the overall team. Individuals who know their strengths work together to form better partnerships, and more thoughtful partnerships create stronger teams (Clifton, 2021). Clifton’s strengths finder results by Gallup taught me much about myself and my strengths. Per the survey, my five strengths are individualization, harmony, empathy, futuristic, and positivity. My initial reaction to the evaluation of my strengths was that this was an accurate representation of my personality and how I go about my daily life.

My strength, Core values, and areas that need strengthening

Individualization, which focuses on my ability to recognize and appreciate individual differences, demonstrates my self-awareness. This ability enables me to acknowledge and celebrate the unique contributions of others, as well as tailor my approach to their needs. Another core value is my Harmony strength is my ability to create and maintain positive relationships. I value building trust and understanding in others, and I strive to be consistent and dependable in my interactions with them. Finally, my Empathy strength reflects this core value as well, as I can understand and appreciate the perspectives of others. My Futuristic strength enables me to see the potential and possibilities of the future and to think beyond the present situation. This ability assists me in thinking critically and developing creative solutions to problems. Finally, positivity is a strength that helps me maintain a positive attitude and inspire others to achieve their goals.

Based on my Strengths Finder assessment results, I need to improve my adaptability in dealing with circumstances. As a nurse, I need to be open to new ideas and flexible enough to work through challenging issues such as priorities and workloads. By developing this skill, I will better deal with unexpected changes and solve problems creatively. Based on my Strengths Finder assessment results, strategic thinking is another strength I need to improve. This ability focuses on my ability to plan for and visualize long-term goals. Enhancing this ability allows me to chart a more direct path to my objectives and anticipate potential roadblocks.  To improve our thought processes and become more strategic leaders and thinkers, we need to challenge our assumptions constantly and to attain this, a nurse leader should ask tough questions to help identify different possibilities, approaches, and potential outcomes (Cline et al., 2022).

Furthermore, based on the results of my Strengths Finder assessment, there are two characteristics that I would like to improve. The first is discipline, which concerns my ability to remain focused and on task. This trait will assist me in remaining organized, prioritizing tasks, and remaining motivated to complete my work. According to Kristoffersen (2019), nursing takes a position on disciplinary knowledge, and this collective building leads to professional identity and visibility of nursing knowledge; without this identity, disciplinary clarity, and commitment to support and promote substantive nursing knowledge development, nursing will not exist. The second trait I want to improve is communication, which focuses on effectively expressing my thoughts and feelings. This trait will assist me in better connecting with others, understanding their perspectives, and developing relationships.

My Strengths Finder assessment results gave me insight into my core values and strengths. Tools like the Strengths Finder test are very useful because they make people more aware of their talents that have developed into strengths that they may not have previously considered. Knowledge of diverse strengths and skills is also useful for building effective teams and helping those teams work well together.  The Strengths Finder test and the knowledge of my strengths was a helpful tool to make my future goals more achievable. I am confident that by focusing on developing these strengths and characteristics, I will be able to achieve my personal and professional objectives.
