In the contemporary world, nurse leaders play essential roles within a nursing organization. As Erickson, Ditomassi and Adams (2018) assert that nurse leaders may oversee an entire unit in an organization, such as the surgical and intensive care unit, or even lead a mental health unit. They also affirm that nurse leaders can engage in planning, directing, evaluating, and leading nursing care activities in a health care organization. Specifically, nursing professionals actively take charge of overseeing other staff development, creating workflows, and ensuring that departmental dashboards show signs of progress in an organization. Besides, nurse leaders are supposed to be communicators, which can be useful in liaising with other departments, patients, and families. Excellent communication skills in a nurse leader will ensure that there is frictionless experience with patients and health care staff. All these roles of nurse leaders are stipulated in the nine principles of nursing. In light of this, the paper delves into giving an in-depth explanation of the importance of nine leadership principles in a health care organization and how nurse leaders in my current organization can help embed the laws to the organizational culture.

Commitment to Excellence

Effective nurse leadership should use commitment to excellence as its foundation. The responsibility for excellence in a healthcare organization means that one should strive daily to meet quality standards. A quality and efficient leader looks beyond the regulatory measure of a health care organization and the profession to develop rigorous expectations for themselves and the team they are leading (Fekaris, 2018). In my organization, nurse leaders develop important priorities regularly to measure the success of their team. As a nurse leader, I will assist my team and other teams within the organization to appreciate the importance of commitment to excellence by developing effective performance measuring tools and awards to performance. This will help the team commit to excellence in their culture, hence organizational culture.

In the current nursing environment, nurse leaders are supposed to ensure they only take into consideration essential things. In health

care, necessary elements include finances, people, services, growth, and healthcare quality. The fact that nursing professionals are more than clinicians means that the former should ensure nurses engage in measuring the satisfaction of patients and employees (Fekaris, 2018). At Southeast Georgia Health System, nurse leaders ensure they make plans for quality performance improvement and keep a close eye on financial management in the effort to achieve this principle of leadership. As a nurse leader, I will apply this principle in my practice to determine and measure my personal growth as a leader and caregiver.

Building Culture Around Service

Health care service, just like any other industry, is increasingly striving to attain customer-centered and customer-responsive service for patients. Therefore, top quality effective nurse leaders should train nurses and other staff to ensure that patient receives quality based care and treat families of patients as customers for the services, which can be achieved by providing personalized levels of healthcare to the patient. In my current organization, all the nurses are required by nurse leaders to respect individual preferences and diversity of patients (Fekaris, 2018). We always recognize the needs of patients and give patients’ rights to comment on the services we are providing. As a nurse leader, I will ensure that all nurses focus on individual personal needs, desires, and goals in the provision of care intending to integrate this principle into my healthcare care organization.

Creation of Leaders

Costanzo et al. (2019) assert that a successful leader finds within himself or herself a place to train other people working with him to be leaders. Based on this assertion, nurse leaders are required to ensure they train other nurses within their team to overcome their weaknesses. In my health care organization, nurse leaders find the team and dedicate most of their energy to nurture other nurses that are around them into positions of growth in an effort of employing this principle with the healthcare organization. As a nurse leader, I will ensure that I actively engage in training my colleagues so as I will be able to raise new nurse leaders from my team.

Focusing on Employee Satisfaction

Fekaris (2018) affirms that it is a requirement of the principle for nurse leaders to envision the workplace as their dream places. This will help them understand how the work environment should be, how to treat other employees and policies that the work environment needs. It will also be more essential to help leaders to develop the best conflict management skills. All nurse leaders will therefore have to make that dream a reality, especially when other nurses are looking to them for guidance (Fekaris, 2018). All these qualities will result in employee satisfaction. In my setting, nurse leaders ensure that all nurses work in a conducive friendly environment, nurse treats each other in a friendly manner, and conflicts are effectively managed to attain the right employee satisfaction levels. As a nurse, my priority if a need top performance will ensure that all the nurses in my team were fully satisfied. I will ensure that I achieve by engaging all nurses in running activities in the workplace, better reward system, and develop the best conflict management system.

Building Accountability

At any workplace, employees always demand to understand all the activities taking place within the setting. It is, therefore, the role of a nurse leader to help employees meet or exceed their expectations by establishing micro-goals for every quarter of a year and review their progress regularly (Fekaris, 2018). This will help build accountability in a health organization. In my healthcare organization, nurses and nurse leaders engage in the creation of micro-goals, which keep us on toes to achieve them and be accountable for them.

Aligning Goals and Values

A nurse leader must align the goals of the team. They lead to the health care organization’s goals and mission. It is a nurse leader’s job to make sure those values are lived out in the daily activities, work habits, and goals of each team. Standards and values also provide established, explicit, and written directions that allow a nurse leader to help a team member course correct when necessary (Fekaris, 2018). However, my organization has not yet achieved this goa. Therefore, as a nurse leader, I will make it my job to make sure my team’s goals and values are helping my organization to attain its standards of healthcare, mission, and vision.

Communicating at All Levels in an Organization

Since the nurse leader’s leading role is to oversee interdisciplinary teams, they are supposed to ensure that they foster trust and establish a clear communication channel between the group and other departments in a health care organization (Fekaris, 2018). This will help the team build a clear communication channel among individuals and departments hence improve employee satisfaction, reduce employee turnover rates, and save organization costs. The present organization that I work for has achieved this goal. However, as a nurse leader in my organization, I will ensure that I support services, physicians, and create proper communication channels that will help my team members to communicate with everyone in the organization in an effective way in an aim of employing this principle of leadership in the culture of the organization.

Recognition of Success

Fekaris (2018) affirms that rewarding successful employees regularly can create a way to improve performance in the future. It is the role of a nurse leader to identify and reward return as an effort to recognize the success of the team. My present organization has a team that feels like their hard work is rewarded is likely to keep working diligently. As a nurse leader, creatively appreciating my team members will be my strategy of making recognition process one of the elements of my organization’s culture.

Therefore, the nine principles of nursing leadership are essential in the management of healthcare facilities. The organization that I work for has tried to institute most of them into its workplace culture. Nurse leaders also play an instrumental role in the execution of the principles.

In 2005, the Nursing Organizations Alliance developed a blueprint for organizational leadership to follow for improving utilization of the nursing profession. These became known as the Nine Principles (Table 1-1). After over a decade, it is arguable whether these Nine Principles have been integrated into organizational culture and whether professional nursing has truly made advances.

Evaluate your current or past healthcare organization (if you are not currently working).

Include the following in the assignment:

· Determine if your current or past healthcare organization has met or if they are making progress in meeting the Nine Principles.

· Format each of the Nine Principles as level two headings in APA format.

· Determine what could be done to meet the Nine Principles.

· Consider how, as a nurse leader, you could assist in embedding the Nine Principles in your organizational culture.

· Include at least two scholarly references in addition to the textbook and two citations in the paper.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
