The Joint Commission is an accrediting body in the US. It steers for quality improvement and patient safety globally. According to the Joint Commission’s website, it seeks to continuously optimize health care for the public, in partnership with other stakeholders, by assessing health care organizations and encouraging them to stand out in delivering safe and high-quality care (The Joint Commission, 2021). EBP appears in the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals, whose expectations are that interventions employed in patient care are evidence-based. The Joint Commission requires that accredited healthcare organizations utilize peer-reviewed or evidence-based literature to back clinical practice guidelines (The Joint Commission, 2021). Besides, it recommends organizations use electronic health records having evidence-based protocols and references to the literature they are derived from.
The Joint Commission’s work is based on EBP since it focuses on three concepts essential for high-quality care: high-reliability organizations, safety culture, and robust process improvement. EBP interventions are needed to promote high-quality care (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). The organization has set standards, which serve as the basis during the evaluation process of healthcare organizations (Jha, 2018). The accreditation standards are informed by scientific evidence-based literature in addition to a consensus from experts. Besides, the Joint Commission adds new standards if they are associated with quality of care or patient safety (Jha, 2018). The new standards should also have evidence supporting that they positively impact health outcomes and can be accurately and easily evaluated.
The information I found on the Joint Commission’s website positively changed my perception of the organization. I learned that its accreditation process focuses on crucial patient and organization functions, vital in providing high-quality and safe care (The Joint Commission, 2021). Besides, the organization’s state-of-the-art standards expectations for health organization performance are logical, achievable, and measurable.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) became the buzzword in healthcare with the signing of the ACA into law in 2010 (Laureate, 2018). EBP is using the best information we have to make informed decisions for our patients. EBP involves three components: what is the best evidence, what is the clinician’s judgment, and what is the patient’s preference? The goal of EBP is to improve processes and increase good patient outcomes (Laureate, 2018).
The organization I selected for this assignment is the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC credentials and
recognizes both organizations and individuals that promote nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. The ANCC has several programs: ANCC Accreditation, ANCC Certification Center, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program, and ANCC Pathway to Excellence. The ANCC-accredited organizations provide nurses with the knowledge and skill to help improve patient outcomes. The ANCC Certification provides nurses with the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise in their specialty area. The ANCC Magnet Status is the most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. The ANCC Pathway to Excellence recognizes an organization’s commitment to creating a positive nursing environment (ANCC, n.d).
EBP is supported throughout the ANCC website. Each of their programs are focused on recognizing organizations and individuals that seek to provide quality, safe care. I believe the ANCC’s work is grounded on EBP. For example, the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program is based on 5 components: transformational leadership (senior leadership creates a vision for the future), structural empowerment (strong relationships with community and well-developed processes), exemplary professional practice (strong nursing, patient, and family relationships), new knowledge, innovation, and improvements (ethical and professional responsibility to contribute to patient care through improvements and knowledge), and empirical quality results (processes that increase good patient outcomes) (ANCC, n.d). The information I discovered on the ANCC’s website has changed my perception of their organization. I have gained a better understanding that they are more than just a certification organization.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recognizes and certifies organizations and individuals promoting nursing excellence and high-quality patient outcomes. I also like how you have presented the various programs that the ANCC provides and ANCC Accreditation, the ANCC Certification Center, the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program, and the ANCC Pathway to Excellence (American Nurses Credentialing Center | ANCC, n.d.). Health for some individuals is very much dependent on nutrition and lifestyle, considering culture, evidence-based care, and other factors. It is very impressing to me that members of the Academy play a key role in shaping the public’s food choices to improve nutritional status, and urge consumers and lawmakers to learn about the positive role nutrition plays in healthy lifestyles and disease prevention / management.
