Hello class:

An estimated 83% of all nurses engage in the use of at least one form of social media technology (Wang et al., 2019). How can you utilize social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram to advance your professional networking? What are the pitfalls of utilizing social media for professional networking?

Thank you for sharing!

Take care,

Dr. B

Social media platforms can be used to advance professional networking by allowing nurses from a wide variety of regions and specialties to interact virtually. LinkedIn for example, is a platform focused on professional networking. You can follow professional organizations or relevant individuals. By commenting or liking content you can interact with nurses beyond your immediate physical area and expand your professional network by exploring professional interests. Additionally, other professionals can view your profile and reach out regarding similar interests, past interactions or to inquire about opportunities to collaborate. Pitfalls of using social media do exist, however. Caution should be used when sharing any information on social media. Protected health information should never be shared on these platforms. Careful consideration should be given to the image that is being projected by social media content, as it could negatively impact your professional reputation and credibility (Ventola, 2014).

Many people use social media platforms, one reason is to have a connection with those who are not local to their area. It’s the “world wide web” and can keep us informed on activities, occurrences, and people from everywhere. I think LinkedIn would be the only platform I would use for professional networking. LinkedIn could be used effectively to advance one’s profession because it’s business in nature. You can follow others successes, find out about work / educational conferences, and more and by the same token, others could connect with you and follow your successes. The three others you mentioned are also used by many, but from my somewhat limited experience, they are for the most part personal in nature. For example, where I’m eating dinner, what I’m wearing, weekend adventures and I think most professional connections would not consider this tasteful to share with random people. I would consider it a pitfall for my professional contacts to see that I was on a boat this weekend drinking alcohol, and probably having a little more of that than I should have. Social media is useful, it is my opinion that one should keep them separate, not mixing business with pleasure. I think I’ve actually heard that advice somewhere before. LOL

Social media is both a blessing and a curse. Social allows one individual to reach out to thousands of resources. A linked in gives one individual access to multiple job sources while also promoting what they are looking for in a company. The individual essentially sells themselves, boosting their skills and influences. Linked in will automatically connect you to different companies with the same interest. The only downside of social media, especially Instagram, an individual has to be very careful what they post. Have to withhold a professional outlook on all platforms, not just linked.

Topic 5 DQ 1: Innovative Models of Care

Health care delivery is challenging since patient needs keep on changing over time. Patient-centeredness is also a critical need at a time when the shift to value-based care has taken center stage in health care provision. Accordingly, innovativeness is critically needed in health practice to address the current and emerging demands. Health care organizations with innovative models of care apply unique strategies that enable them to provide services that significantly differ from the standard practice. The Mayo Clinic is a suitable example of an organization using an innovative model of care. Mayo’s model is defined by high quality, compassionate care offered in multispecialty, integrated academic institutions (Mayo Clinic, 2021). The main feature of the Mayo clinic model of care is providing health services in a scholarly environment of research and education. The staff also embraces a culture that is specific to Mayo’s clinic professionalism and leadership.

Mayo’s innovative model promotes interprofessional collaboration by encouraging a culture where different teams work together to address a common problem. In dispensing patient care, Mayo’s model is characterized by a multispecialty integration staff that facilitates comprehensive patient evaluation with timely, efficient assessment and treatment (Mayo Clinic, 2021). The multispecialty approach allows different care practitioners to come together to apply innovative and therapeutic technology and techniques.

Innovative models are also instrumental in delivering cost-effective health care. Through innovativeness, health care organizations can avoid wastage and deliver outcomes with the minimal resources possible as they address specific patient needs, such as in the treatment of chronic conditions (Gordon et al., 2021). The same case applies to the Mayo clinic innovative model. Focusing on quality instead of quantity ensures that health care services are value-based. Integration of innovative diagnostic techniques ensures that patient care is quick, precise, and error-free. Minimizing adverse outcomes and preventing wastage enhances cost-effectiveness.
