Hello class!

Can behavior be changed in any sustainable way simply by inviting people to engage in legislative change? Reflect on your answer carefully. How does structure influence behavioral change, and how does the impact of structure on behavior alter your approach to engaging in legislative change?

Thank you for sharing!

Take care,

Dr. B

Class:

Weberg, Mangold, Porter-O’Grady, & Malloch (2018) state that leadership is about more than just changing things; it is about changing the world.

Effective leadership calls for the recognition that the old system is no longer viable and that nurse leaders should drive change. Emerging clinical leaders must be increasingly clear about changing aspects of the environment that suggest the need for a different calibration of work, workplace, and relationships. How can the nurse leader allow for shared governance to support change to clinical practice? How can they impact their state legislation as well?

Thank you for sharing!

Take care,

Dr. B

Public health places a high priority on policymaking, and nurses with doctoral preparation are particularly able to take the lead in formulating nursing policy. Although legislators are skilled at creating laws and regulations, they frequently turn to subject matter experts for information on the modifications, updates, and developments driving policy evolution. From the corridors of hospitals to the halls of Congress, nurses possess the knowledge and experience necessary to speak up for their patients and the healthcare sector. A number of specialty-focused associations are available for nurses to join at the national level, including the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and others (Williams et al., 2018). Members of these groups will have a range of chances to influence nursing’s impact on health care policy. Nurses can help their causes by writing letters, meeting with lawmakers, attending political events, and making contributions to political action groups. Through these organizations, nurses can network with coworkers from various areas, exchange knowledge, and pool their empirical data to make more persuasive and unified arguments for the changes they want to see in their sector, communities, and workplaces. These organizations are leading the charge in the fight for legislation that has a direct bearing on the nation’s nursing supply, nurse working conditions, access to healthcare, and patient outcomes.

Locally, nurses can get involved in politics by taking on leadership roles in the healthcare system or talking to elected representatives about legislation that affects the sector. A nurse can run for municipal office, participate in city councils and committees, and receive formal political training. And even something as straightforward as exercising one’s right to vote might have an impact on healthcare policy. Nurses can work directly on issues affecting healthcare by doing internships with elected representatives. Additionally, nurses can run for state government (Lake, 2020).

According to McKnight et al., shared governance is a decision-making process that occurs between the nurse working at the bedside and the nurse leaders. This process enhances patient outcome and creates an environment of inclusion (McKnight et al, 2022). Shared governance was developed upon five premises: (1) That nursing is a profession that serves people and makes the best decision to

improve the well-being of the people they serve; (2) Nursing is protected by state laws and regulation. Nurses are required to follow state approved education and regulation: (3) The nurse works within established standards of practice, and they are accountable for decisions they make; (4) Each professional body provides members with the opportunity to participate in decision making; (5) Nursing has a professional organizational structure that make decisions for the betterment of the profession (O’Grady et al, 2021).

NUR 514 Topic 4 DQ 2 propose strategies you can implement to increase your participation in the health care policymaking in order to support patient advocacy

As an advanced practice nurse, propose strategies you can implement to increase your participation in the health care policymaking in order to support patient advocacy.

Unread

As an advanced practice nurse, I can increase my participation in health care policymaking to support patient advocacy by taking the first step towards active involvement. After reading more about the Arizona Nurses Association (n.d.), I discovered more about their agenda and different committees. AzNA supports public policy that address quality and affordable healthcare, social determinants of health and outcomes, allowing nurses to work to the top of their license, and ensure safe delivery of nursing care under direct nurse supervision. They also support policies that provide nurses with the resources needed to provide safe, quality patient care. Such resources include a robust workforce, safe workplace environments, provide funds for training and development, support payment structures that reflect the value of nursing practice, and safeguard the Nurse Practice Act and Arizona State Board of Nursing. I have options to start in their per diem level at one to two hours a month of participation and work on increasing my time commitment. Many committees exist, but I think I would be most interested in the Public Policy Committee.
