Beginning a new journey to obtain your MSN is exciting! Yet, it can be stressful and at times overwhelming. This week I invite you to reflect on Bible verses and their application to your journey towards your MSN degree. I hope that this allows you to reflect a little and find peace and joy as you continue through this first class. The following activity is not required, but substantial responses will count towards participation.

Review the following two Bible verses. Please apply at least one of these to your personal process of beginning your education journey and/or your role as an advanced professional nurse. If these two verses do not relate to you please feel free to share one that does and describe how it has impacted you.

Isaiah 28: 9-10 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? ……For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little and there a little”

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I look forward to reading your responses.

You have a great response and input role as an APRN. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will strive to impact health promotion and disease prevention in racial and ethnic minorities, especially from rural areas in the community. I will work towards addressing cultural differences between patients and healthcare providers that can result in holistic care to diagnose and treat patients while improving the patient’s compliance.

Holistic care includes treating patients’ physical, mental, and cultural or ethnic parts of their health (cultural sensitivity) through awareness of patients’ differences that exist without assigning value to them (Tucker et al., 2019).

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I love this Bible verse as it gives me strength and courage in my day-to-day life. This Bible verse always reminds me to continue trying to reach my goal. As it says prayer is a continuous process, it is not like you stop praying once you get your answer. This Bible verse related to my life because when I had obstacles immigrating to this country I never gave up, I seek and tried to pass those obstacles. I failed many times, and I already knew this Bible verse. So, it gave me strength and courage and I believed that God would help me to reach my goal. God always sees our challenging work and struggles but it is not necessary to get the answer right away if you wait and try increasingly, you will find the way. Thank You.

My choice to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree was prompted by my desire to do more for the health and healing of people of all ages. While I know that I have an impact on patients’ lives in my current role as a bedside nurse, I feel a responsibility to do more and contribute to improving our health care system as a whole. I take motivation from Phillipians 2:4, “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others”. This verse motivates me in the same way as a quote by Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born”. With this motivation in mind, I believe that I will persist in my endeavor to complete this program and balance it with my work schedule in order to meet my responsibility to others.

Philippians 4: 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This is one of my favorite verse from the Bible and I find my self reciting it daily in my head and out loud at times for it gave me confidence and assurance that everything will be ok no matter what the situation is. Coming to America with no family or close relatives to rely on was full of heartache and disappointment . Had to fend for myself as best as I possible could. Eventually with many nights of prayers I got settled and went back to school to peruse a new career path in nursing. Working full time, going to school and balancing a family with three small children was no easy task with much trials and tribulations i graduated from nursing school. Soon after graduation i began working in the emergency room as a brand new nurse it was very challenging however i was able to over come all obstacles just by believing I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Hi Melanie, the bible verse that you mentioned, Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” relates to my goal. Growing up as a catholic I have been taught bible verses and it did give me strength when I am weak. I have strong faith in the lord and I believe all obstacles I can overcome. Though this is the start of my journey of becoming a nurse practitioner, I can achieve and finish what I have started with God as the center of my education. In addition to the verse that you’ve posted, the bible verse Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” also helps me to keep going.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

God’s word teaches me about having faith in life and strengthens me to be a better person as a nurse, especially working at the bedside during pandemics. This verse is always on top of my mind; we shall not be afraid of the unknown, and it doesn’t stop me from practicing direct patient care. We now know that covid-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future; we may learn how to live together and co-exist in the same universe. Thereby giving me the strength and courage to move beyond, I decided to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree to move a step forward in my life, a new chapter. I know I’m not alone when I face challenges during my life journey.

My decision to pursue the current MSN program and my nursing journey was necessitated by my desire to fulfill the goal of achieving specialized knowledge and advanced nursing skills. In agreement to your claim, the journey can be exciting and challenging at times. To encourage me through this journey, I have identified a verse that clearly speaks about my experience this far: Psalm 34:4–5 “I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.” This is a motivational verse that does not only address on the challenges ahead, but also speaks of the confidence and the hard work through which my academic and professional goals can be achieved.

I love how you express the desire to pursue advanced education. Nurses, for me, are lifelong learners. Education is not just for financial gain but for the advancement of our knowledge and enrichment of our life experiences. Like you, my life is always influenced by my desire to become better, whether it is via my profession or my personal life. I was once a very fearful student. I have no confidence and constantly second-guessing myself. I overcome that by my faith in God and by always holding on to God’s words and promises. Thank you.

Starting any new journey is exciting, yet change can be stressful and overwhelming. I have delayed starting my journey to my MSN for

so many reasons, but I am so glad I have finally started. I have forgotten over the years how valuable it is to have goals and be working towards something.

I feel I can relate to Mathew 7:7 to starting my MSN. If one does not ask or seek or knock, then a person can be stuck and not move along in a career or life. I have had many great opportunities in my nursing career so far that have taught me so much, but there is always more to learn and ways to continue to grow. Especially in healthcare, new technologies and research improve patient care and outcomes. Beginning my MSN has really motivated me to work harder and become better. I want to take what I learn on this journey and apply it to make a difference.

I must remember to continue to ask questions and seek new opportunities. This will help me in so many ways as a person, mother, friend and nurse. I am grateful for the support of my family in pursuing my MSN, and cannot wait to see the opportunities that are opened for me.

I firmly believe that correct communication is critical in providing the best quality of care. A few years ago, when I worked in the ICU, I had a Korean patient who had a stroke and was placed on fall risk. The patient had his daughter and wife in the room, and the daughter was the primary translator for medical providers. I was the night shift nurse and introduced myself to patient and family. I requested the daughter to explain to his father that he is at fall risk due to unsteady gait and imbalance and to call for help every time he attempts to get out of bed. The daughter explained the situation to her father in Korean, and later, the wife and daughter went home. I was doing my two-hour checks on my patients and noticed that my  Korean patient was almost trying to get out of bed and was about to fall. I ran into the room, making a noise, and he quickly stopped himself in bed. I tried to ask him why he did not call for help, but he did not understand my question. I monitored him closely that night. I waited till the following morning as one of my colleague was a Korean nurse, and she was coming at 07:00 am. After the change of shift, I asked her to help me translate. She came and asked the patient why he did not follow his daughter’s instructions that were given to him before she went home. To my surprise, patient had told the Korean nurse that his daughter only told him to eat and sleep tight and nothing else. Then, I pleaded with my colleague to explain to him that he was admitted due to a stroke and that he could fall because of an unsteady gait. The patient was surprised that he had a stroke and he could not move by himself anymore. Later, I found that according to Korean culture, a daughter or wife cannot tell Korean men in the family about their weaknesses. Only another male in the family can relay that message to him, which is why the wife and daughter did not disclose his condition. Understanding each other’s cultural beliefs is essential in delivering the best care possible.

There was a situation at work that occurred that involved an individual from another country. They were visiting a relative in our town, and she was considered a minority versus the number of other ethnics that live in our population. The patient was requesting a female nurse, and her current nurse informed the patient that there were no other female nurses available on the unit that could currently assist them. It was difficult for the patient to understand why someone could not walk in and help her right away. “A lack of cultural awareness has a negative effect on attitudes and preparedness to take care of culturally diverse patients “(Hosseini et al., 2021, p. 1). We were shorthanded on that day and our charge nurse was also assigned her own group of patients. So, being unable to meet this patient’s needs at a moment’s notice made me feel bad but we were all swamped and missing nursing assistants due to call outs and some patients needing a 1:1 sitter. This patient’s cultural issue with only wanting a female nurse could have all been avoided but the communication about her needs fell by the wayside. The nursing assignment could have been planned beforehand but for reasons unknown, it did not happen. Respecting an individual’s culture and their ways would have made a significant difference how this patient received care. The patient is already dealing with a health issue that landed them in the hospital and they are obviously stressed out. Not adding issues to their stay would have been really appreciated by this patient.
