The two different roles of ethical guidelines I’d like to compare are

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice registered nurses who offer patients primary and specialty care. However, because nursing is their foundation in practice, NPs must also abide by the standards of care established by their state’s Nurse Practice Act and state Board of Nursing. The code of ethics for NPs is set down in the American Nurses Association (ANA). Clinical Nurse Specialists receive training in organizing and supervising the development and implementation of care plans, as well as providing clinical guidance and instruction. They also “conduct research”, take on projects and advance their knowledge skills (AACN, n.d.). Whereas, an NP is given and directed to provide primary care which is delivered at the hospital. They “assess, diagnose and treat”, this is much different from what a CNS provides to that same patient. An example that directs what CNS do, is more aftercare, such a way that a patient is taken care after their duration at the hospital and provided “continued care” even post the main procedures, they put “people before self-interest” (ANA,n.d). From a broader perspective, there aren’t many differences between NP and CNS because the ANA guidelines keep both these roles in check corresponding to their work. All nurses must adhere to ethical standards regardless of their educational status. The advanced practice nurses are one among their group. By adhering to these roles, nurses can influence their patients’ health by upholding the moral precepts of doing no harm and helping them to return to a productive life
