Imposter syndrome is like this mind game where high achievers doubt themselves, thinking they’re not as smart or skilled as they actually are. It messes with their heads, making them feel like they’re about to be exposed as a total fraud, even when there’s proof, they’re successful. People call it imposter syndrome or imposter phenomenon, and lately, they use the initials IP more. Back in 1978, Suzanne Imes, Ph.D., and Pauline Rose Clance, Ph.D. noticed this thing, especially among successful women and others who felt pushed to the sidelines. It’s like feeling you’re faking it, even when you’re totally not (Imposter Phenomenon, 2023).

Stumbling upon those impostor syndrome videos on YouTube has been quite a revelation for me. These videos dug deep into the intricacies of impostor syndrome, and it’s surprising to learn that it’s a legitimate phenomenon. Reflecting on my own experiences, I can now recognize instances where I’ve encountered this syndrome without even realizing it. Your decision to introduce this engaging and informative topic is truly appreciated; it not only enlightened me but probably many others who were unfamiliar with it. I’m genuinely enthusiastic about sharing this newfound knowledge with my friends, creating awareness about impostor syndrome, and offering insights on how to navigate and cope with it. A big thanks for bringing attention to this important topic! The following are just a few videos I have found on YouTube that further explain and share information about impostor syndrome.

One area I consistently try to improve in is freeing myself of negative thought patterns, often referred to as thinking traps. Thinking traps are also known as cognitive biases or logical fallacies. They are patterns of distorted or irrational thinking that can lead to errors in judgment or decision-making. They affect how information is perceived, and interpreted, and how conclusions are drawn. Many thinking traps that affect daily lives, and without knowing what they are, it will be hard to change your thinking patterns. The video below illustrates the most common thinking traps, and how to overcome them.

In addition to this video, I enjoyed the TEDx talk “Getting stuck in the negatives (and how to get unstuck)” by Alison Ledgerwood. In this video, Ledgerwood discusses how it has been proven that it is mentally harder for people to convert from losses to gains than from gains to losses. This suggests that once we think about something as a loss, that way of thinking about it tends to stick in our heads and creates resistance to our attempts to change it. It takes more work to see the upside of things, however the process of retraining the mind is not as complicated as one would think. According to the video, being aware that the negative tends to stick and propagate is the first step. Ways to convert the brain to a more positive mindset include writing for a few minutes things that you are thankful for. This has been proven to boost happiness, well-being, and health. It is also recommended to rehearse good news to share with others. People often forget to talk about the good moments in their day and tend to share the nuances of day-to-day life. Both videos are helpful in creating a safe space for yourself within your own mind which will lead to a healthier and more satisfying life.

Imposter syndrome is the belief that you have accomplished goals due to sheer luck or being at the right place at the right time, rather than acknowledging the hard work and commitment you have applied toward those achievements (Eruteya, 2022). It’s the belief that everyone around you has lost their mind to put you in charge or nominate you for an award. It comes down to your insecurities and how you view yourself (Eruteya, 2022). Often, feeling like an imposter is present when assuming new roles or positions, and is marked by overthinking particularly when you have made a mistake, believing that you will be found out as a fraud, and self-sabotaging behaviors that may lead to real consequences (Eruteya, 2022). It is more than a lack of confidence because you think that others will determine your inadequacy and that can shake you to your core.

When I was first accepted into nursing school, I clearly remember having these feelings and expressing them to my friend who said, “If they didn’t think that you could do it, they would not have offered you a position in the first place” and that stuck with me. Over the last year and a half, I have put a lot of work into myself, my confidence, and my security and have taken the time to acknowledge my successes along the way. Celebrating small wins, being present through mindfulness and meditation, and surrounding myself with people who support me but also keep me grounded have been the most beneficial in combating the imposter phenomenon. I also found the article linked below to be helpful for tips on creating a positive mindset.
