NRS 451VN DQ Theories and Concepts in Leadership and Management

Topic 1 DQ 1

Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap

In nursing, it is important to have nurses who are leaders and others who are assigned a role in management. A nurse who is a leader is someone who has the ability to influence those around them as well as having the ability to understand their followers. (Whitney, 2018) A nursing leader can be either formal or informal. A formal leader is someone who has been assigned by the organization and has duties outlined for them. Whereas an informal leader is someone who does not have a specific title. A nurse who is a good leader shows compassion, trust, stability and hope and obtain their power through directing and empowering others. (Whitney, 2018) “Nursing leaders are often expected to make patient care more efficient to help reduce hospital stays, lower risk of readmissions, and reduce healthcare costs” (2021).

A nurse who is in management is assigned by an organization and manages the day to day operations in nursing. (2021) They have specific duties and responsibilities and focus on tasks such as organizing, staffing, planning, supervising, making assignments, and coordinating tasks that need to be completed. (Whitney, 2018) “A nurse manager primarily focuses on keeping daily operations in the department as efficiently as possible… They supervise nurses and other staff members and provide training as needed. (2021).

There are some goals in leadership and management that overlap. Some of these goals include influencing others in a positive way, being visionary and looking towards the future, and are not narrowly focused. Ways that leaders and management might influence others in a positive way. It is important that both managers and leaders work on their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in order to make good decisions for those who they are managing or leading. By being a nursing leader, facilitating change occurs by setting an example for those who are around you as well as being someone that others can trust. Setting standards for colleges is a great way to facilitate change.

organizations. Management is about ensuring effective running of daily activities and operations in an organization. On its part, leadership is about ensuring that individuals or followers are inspired not just to attain daily activities but improve their offering. Therefore, leadership focuses on value creation while management’s main focus in counting the value (Abou Ramadan & Eid, 2020). Management roles like supervision, efficient running of departments and hiring as well as developing budgets and interacting with stakeholders are vital aspects of organizational operations and meeting its set goals and objectives. On the other hand, leadership roles like ensuring that patients get quality care, oversighting nursing teams and nurses, improving quality of patient care and development of efficient systems to reduce costs and lower turnover rates are essential to the organization (Cummings et al., 2021). The implication is that one cannot be an effective leader if they cannot manage resources in the most effective manner. Further, managers require leadership attributes like being person-centered to inspire their teams to deliver expected care interventions and perform.

The goals of management and leadership overlap as all managers need effective leadership skills like communication and problem-solving attributes. Managers should also offer direction just like leaders and even inspire their employees and teams to perform and be productive. The implication is that a better manager has leadership skills while an effective leader should also have managerial attributes to attain expected productivity and inspire their teams (Weiss et al., 2019). As a nurse leader, change requires one to have abilities like effective communication, self-awareness and problem-solving skills. Therefore, the overlap between management and leadership roles means that I can initiate change in my practice by inspiring my teams and followers to carry my change vision through effective communication and interactions with them to deliver quality patient care.
