There are 7 different nursing leadership theories. These include Great man theory, trait theory, contingency leadership theory, situational leadership theory, leader-member exchange theory, transformational leadership theory, and servant theory. (Whitney, 2018). The two that I have choose to talk about are transformational leadership theory as well as situational leadership theory. The transformational leadership theory was founded by James Burns in the 1970s. This theory says that nurses who are transformational leaders are nurses who empower and motivate others and is someone who has visions and focuses on long-term success. (Whitney, 2018) A strength of this theory would be that theses nurses work great with new nurses because they have the ability to mentor, gain others trust through listening to their concerns as well as encourage them to work independently. (2021) These nurses work great in hospital or clinical settings that needs improvement; however, the weakness of this theory would be that these leaders are not as effective in facilities that require them to be responsible for day-to-day decision making. (2021)

The next theory I will talk about is the situational leadership theory. This theory was founded by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard in the 1960s. In this theory, nurses are more focused on their relationships rather than their tasks and they “work well in healthcare because they are flexible and modify their leadership style based on an organization or individual nurse’s needs” (2021). The strength of this theory is that these nurses work will with nursing students and work well in a flexible environment. However, they tend to turn away from long-term strategies or goals within their organization. (2021)

Hi Ashley,

I like how you brought up transformational leadership. This theory was identified by James Burns and he identified four key components of transformational leadership (Xu, 2017). The four key components are ideal impact, strong motivation, intellectual stimulation, and personal considerations (Xu, 2017). This is great for leaders to motivate their followers and achieve their goals.

Hi Ashley,

Good post. In contingency theory, no one way or style of leadership are applied to all situations. In other words, it recognizes that there might be variables influencing any particular situation, and a leader must choose the right course of action, taking into account those variables, in this regard, leadership researchers white and Hodgson state, effective leadership is about striking the right balance between needs, context, and behavior. The best leaders have not only the right traits but also the ability to assess the needs of their followers, analyze the situation at hand, and act accordingly

There are different theory approaches in order to facilitate a solid leadership foundation. I will be comparing two different leadership theories.”Leading and managing in nursing impact not only other staff members but also potentially every patient under the staff’s care” (Whitney, 2018).

The servant leadership theory focuses on the well being and the growth of the team. This type of leader acts in a spiritual manner, they are listeners and do not judge others. When one is a servant they usually use that individual to lead. in doing so, allows for a more understanding and open to new ideas by the leader. A strength of this theory includes that it is an open environment and is inclusive. This type of leader encourages others to want to lead. A weakness of this theory can be that those working under them may sometimes use the leaders kindness for weakness. This is why it is important to have a strong team working under this leader.

The second theory is transformational leadership. This theory focuses on empowering and encouraging the followers. These type of leaders are goal oriented and plan for the future. “Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems” (Anonymous, nd). A strength is that it is a team effort and all members are included. A weakness can be that if an individual is not doing their part and being involved, it can throw off the dynamic.

Well written, Breanna. The servant leadership theory sounds like a great leader. Sounds like a leader who you would be willing to follow. Someone who wants you to learn and better yourself sounds like a leader I would like to work with or a leader I would like to become(Andersen, 2018). I will look into this theory a little deeper. Both theories that you chose were very interesting.
