A nurse manager is responsible for daily operations in a hospital, on the unit. She is responsible for supervising her fellow nurses and support staff. In theory, nurse managers are in a clerical, administrative, and managerial position and do not take patients (Devik et al., 2020). Having worked MedSurg floors throughout the nursing shortage, more often than not nurse managers some patients up to a full patient load. Outside of patient care nurse managers role is supposed to be recognizing and assisting in clinical problems, ensuring accuracy in charting and care delivery, providing clinical and managerial expertise, coordinating with DON to promote facility goals. Assist in development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures, communicate with patients and families (Goldsby et al., 2020). Nurses wanting to move into a nurse manager role are going to need at least their Bachelor of Science in nursing degree, but more often than not nurses need a Master’s of Science in Nursing and at least a couple years of experience managing people (LeaderStat, 2022).
Being a successful leader of a nursing team requires a combination of leadership styles. No one leadership style is going to be successful with all people or all groups of people. The authoritarian autocratic leadership style is very successful when trying to get people to follow a process and to move quickly. A Democratic participative leadership style is more advantageous when you’re trying to build teamwork raise morale and encourage collaboration . Delegating or laissez faire leadership style is beneficial when you’re wanting staff to be creative and confident but requires more time. I think a combination of having an authoritarian overall concept mixed with democratic participation of team members and a small amount of the laze fair flexibility creates a productive, engaging, and fair leader (MindTools, 2022). As an atheist I can not say these characteristics align with a Christian worldview, I do believe they align with a person being moral, caring and competent.
