During the years gone by, I remember viewing writing assignments as each being a single entity. Although I knew each had an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, along with references and in-text citations, I did not correlate the commonalities within the writing process until I reviewed the publication of Grand Canyon University (GCU) “The Writing Process – The College Essay” (GCU, 2015). This is a resourceful guide for writing scholarly papers. It is an explicit, user-friendly written text and a short, memorable, comical video leading through the academic writing process. Sections 2 and 4 include worksheets, whereas Section 5 explains the difference between revising and editing, which I have previously perceived as the same when writing and reviewing a paper; however, they are different parts of the writing process. The best results of a paper are accomplished when understanding and implementing revising and editing as separate writing process phases and not done together when reviewing a paper. Revising involves writing what is said, focusing on organizing ideas, and authentication, whereas editing involves how it is said concentrating on such things as grammar (GCU, 2015). Printing this GCU writing process guideline and implementing it for writing a thesis assignment will result in a successful paper.
Reflecting upon my nursing student years, I remember a lot of memorizing, which led to rhymes and songs that correlated, such as learning the phases of a cell or the 12 cranial nerves. I was reminded of this in Section 2 with the Cubing worksheet and cutout (GCU, 2015), which I will keep beside me as I write my first thesis in many years, along with the printed guideline. I have printed this GCU writing process text and put it in a white notebook with the Cubing cut out in the clear front pocket for easy accessibility guidelines for all my future writing assignments. My once fearful anxiety about tediously writing a thesis has become a new and welcomed adventure in furthering my nursing education.

The video that you shared was very informative and detailed about the writing process. I learnt that the thesis statement is found in the introduction of an essay. According to the video, a good thesis statement is clear, focus and provable. It basically controls what information is important in the essay. According to Piper,J .E, (2017) in a research paper, your thesis statement should be your central argument that you support with facts from your research. This means you have to know quite a bit about your topic before you write your thesis statement. At the same time, it’s helpful to have a general idea of what your thesis will be when you start doing your research. This way, you know which information will be helpful for your paper. Try to come up with a thesis statement fairly early in your research. You can modify it later on if you discover new information. Most thesis statements fit into two basic formulas. The first formula is known as, “This is true for these reasons.” You state your main point and describe, in a very general way, the reasons why that main point is true. The second formula for a thesis statement can be summarized as, “Despite this opposing viewpoint, these reasons are why this is true.” This formula allows you to acknowledge other arguments but explains why your argument is the best.

Critical thinking is the ability to apply quick and effective thinking to a specified situation (Dean, 2018). According to the nursing process, critical thinking is taking into consideration nursing assessment and the desired outcomes. Interventions play a huge part in critical thinking. Many characteristics contribute to critical thinking such as asking questions, gathering relevant information, thinking through solutions and conclusions, open mindedness, confidence and effective communication. The ability to effectively break down an issue can be difficult. Critical thinking is not something that comes easy. We are taught what it takes to critically think but it takes experience to gain the confidence needed to feel secure. It is vital because majority of the time it can save a life in the long run.
Evidence-base practice is the integration of clinical expertise and the most current research (Dean, 2018). Elements are best available evidence, clinicians’ knowledge and skills and the patients wants and needs. It is all about making better decisions and a desired impact of outcomes.
Critical thinking and evidence-based practice play an equal role as they relate to client outcomes. If it were not for evidence-based practice, there would be no proof if certain things were effective. Critical thinking is interactive and quick. We as nursing learn about both of these topics in school. When we start to actually put them in action and think about what part each plays in the nursing process, this is when it starts to make sense. Developing critical thinking skills is something that comes through trial and error. I feel that when we utilize critical thinking skills we stay on our toes and sharp.
A prime example utilizing both concepts would be knowing that keeping some wounds covered up can keep them macerated and not heal properly. I am a believer in leaving things open to air. When some wounds are not draining there is no need for them to be covered to stay moist and be breeding grounds for infection.

How does knowledge of the foundations and history of nursing provide a context in which to understand current practice? Identify at least three trends in nursing practice from the “Nursing Timeline of Historical Events” media piece. How have these trends influenced your perspective of nursing practice?
What do you look forward to as you begin this educational experience and your personal search for purpose? What is your greatest fear? How can you overcome it? Write about one specific educational experience from your past in which you addressed a fear and overcame it and how you succeeded in this process. Read Lake and von Baeyer’s article, “Tips for Successful Students.” Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study?

What factors need to be considered when determining whether or not identified actions are within the domain of nursing practice? Be sure to cite current literature in your response. You have been asked to investigate a new procedure that physicians would like nurses to adopt in the hospital. Discuss the process you would apply to determine whether the procedure falls within the RN scope of practice and how you would go about introducing the new procedure with physicians and fellow nurses. Outline the process for developing nursing standards of practice, and identify the different entities that might be involved in developing a standard of practice.
Learning happens slowly and consistently. Take for example the process we went through when we learned to read. There were steps, from holding a book the right way up, to recognising letters to phonetics, years of practising and finally fluency.
It’s not actually that hard to learn to read for neurotypical kids, but you do have to develop building blocks and commit to regular practise. It is the willingness to practise that contributes to success as a student.
Consistency is becoming less common in adolescents. Some of the areas most affected by teens’ lack of consistency are mathematics, music and languages. In each of these areas, there needs to be a mastery of some basic skills that only comes with practise. Failure is one of the greatest tools in the learning process. Unfortunately, too many people are simply overwhelmed by the feeling of failure rather than being able to stand back and look at the lessons it can teach us. Having the tenacity to stare down failure is an extraordinary skill.
Teach kids to look at failure in an analytical way. What is the size and gravity of the failure? What are its consequences? What can be learnt from the experience? Goal setting focuses a student’s attention towards certain behaviours and information and away from distractions. Research tells us that incremental goals are far more effective than large goals.
If a student is able to break down a big goal, like solving a big problem, innovating or achieving a higher grade, into small bite-sized pieces they are more likely to be successful. If they can incorporate the feedback they receive on each occasion, the small wins eventually lead to big achievements.
Discuss how evidence-based practice is applied in your practice setting and describe the desired patient outcome achieved through this approach. Explain the value that professional nursing organizations in networking and in the legislative process. Provide a rationale for your response.
Lopes Write Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.
Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.
Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
