Wonderful reading your post about doing what is ethically right by your patient in this situation. You also showed a great deal of fidelity which is being honest and telling the truth. Fidelity is defined as faithfulness to a person, belief, or cause. It is demonstrated by being loyal and supportive. Fidelity in nursing means nurses must remain true to professional promises, such as the promise to provide high-quality, competent, safe, and efficient patient care (Faubion,2023).  I have experienced many challenges in the past that have challenged my ethical decisions as a nurse. For instance, I nursed my childhood best friend a few years ago, after she was admitted on the unit that I worked following an incision and drainage of her right breast. She was having lots of swelling in her breast and sought medical attention. After being discharged, she still came to my home for daily dressings changes, and we spoke about all other causes except cancer. She believed it was simply an infection of her mammary glands, but her diagnosis said otherwise, and the doctors were suspecting cancer. Being a nurse to a close friend is very challenging especially when you are faced with loyalty tests like this one. After a few weeks, her results were ready, and she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Even after the confirmation, the doctor delayed telling her the truth. As a loyal friend, I would rather for her to know the truth but as it relates to my profession it is not my place or duty to discuss patient results. This situation has taught me to draw the line between nursing and friendship.

Title: NRS 430 Discussion: Development of Nursing Standards of Practice

Ethical principles are crucial in guiding ethical practice in particular situations. Nurses need to specify and explain their professional ethical obligations to patients and assure them to be ethically competent and trustworthy. The ethical principle I have selected is accountability. Accountability characterizes the idea that a person is responsible for their actions (Chesterton et al., 2021). If a person opts for unfavorable actions, the person must be prepared to face the consequences. Accountability is majorly about protecting quality patient care outcomes, maintaining competency, and safeguarding standards of practice while taking responsibility for those affected by nurses’ clinical practice. Every nurse must be responsible for his or her actions and choices in clinical practice (Rubio-Navarro et al., 2019). Accountability seeks a high work level, encourages dependability, fosters honesty, and gains trust from clients. Accountable nurses often provide quality patient care. Accountability can be demonstrated in patient situations by administering drugs as prescribed and documenting all supplies utilized in patient care.
