You are right about the change in the concept of health, diseases and ill-health. It has evolved from the idea that diseases are caused by the gods or poor sanitation to what we now know. Sickness is not just caused by injury or diseases. Mental health is a form of sickness as you said. Cleanliness, immunization, healthy diets can help promote health. As nurses we must also consider the other causes of ill-health, for instance unhealthy life styles like smoking, conditions that some individuals find themselves which is totally not of their making and is beyond their control. The term health has evolved over many years. The concept of health has evolved from some specific beliefs whereby prayer and sacrifices were made to gods and deities to achieve health, and diseases were attributed to the actions of demons and supernatural forces. Hippocrates brought about the first major break in health by separating “religious beliefs and establish the relationship between environmental/personal cleanliness and the origin of disease…. and that health is a product of environmental and behavioral factors” (Badesh, et.al., 2017). Hippocrates believed that disease resulted from imbalances between four body fluids. Galen, a physician in the first century BCE expanded the Hippocratic definition by considering the patient as a whole, including mental and emotional state. Through several scientific discoveries, healthcare delivery methods kept changing till the formation of World Health Organization (WHO). WHO described “health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, n.d.). Great post Mabel. I really liked the point that you brought up about considering the patient as a whole including the mental and emotional state in addition to the physical state of the patient. Alot of time the mental aspect of health and health promotion is a widely underrepresented and goes hand in hand with the physical state of health. For example, if a patient is highly anxious about their treatment or procedures they will be less likely to go through it and thus not complete the required treatment needed to treat the underlying disease or illness and it would be detrimental to their physical health which in this case would be limited by the mental state.

The concept of health has changed considerably over time. According to a general timeline by Falkner (2018), health was the absence of disease through the early part of the 19th century and considered the ability to remain a functional part of society in the early 20th century. Improvements in sanitation made diseases more manageable, and vaccinations eradicated many other common illnesses through these periods (Falkner, 2018). Today’s health care professionals are taking a proactive approach by educating their clients and encouraging disease prevention, not just treatment after disease or illness presents itself. Today’s definition of health is also more than being disease-free. It encompasses wellness, promoting healthy living, and disease prevention. Health today involves the whole client or the holistic approach, made up of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.

I enjoyed this article. I have great respect for seasoned nurses, over the last 15 years I have learned so many amazing skills from their pristine ironed out patient care practices that many have developed over the years through trial and error. Some have evolved with the times and adopted new evidenced based practices and some have not or been reluctant to change. However, I have heard many times that a new nurse should have experience on a med-surg floor first before speciality care, while this is sound advice for some there is no size fits all for each individual nurse. Nurses must find their niche and the goal is to be happy and feel a sense of fulfillment with the work they are doing, this leads to better job performance thus leading to better care from the nurse to the patient. I believe it is important to support new grads in their endeavors and guide them in the right direction to pursue an area of nursing they are called to. As a new graduate nurse I went right into to the operating room and faired well without med-surg experience, but do remember getting push back from other nurses I worked with not approving of me be hired without previous experience. I think with the staffing crisis most institutions are facing and the older work force retiring, it would be smart to hire new grads that are capable and motivated into speciality areas of nursing care.

Overall the patient must always remain the center and primary focus in nursing care. As individuals, perspectives and values evolve in society, so must our profession in order to continue caring for patients on a individualized holistic level. Education is key. Promoting and providing access to new evidenced based practices allows the older healthcare professional to adapt to new innovative ways of performing outdated task and provides them with reasons why change is necessary. I think change is always hard, in any realm, you serve an institution for so long and then find out the way you had been performing a duty is incorrect may lead to mistrust, however providing support and making space for everyone to voice their opinion goes along way. Maintaining strong health care leaders that are informed, with a strong sense of integrity in their practices is also vital. In my opinion we must supporting our fellow nurses, wether it be the older nurse or the new grad it’s essential to healthy problem solving and maintaining a positive work place environment.
