Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

The concept of Family health is important because health and health-protecting behaviors effect the entire family system. The family can receive guidance from the nurse, through various models of care.

The Adaptive Care Model is one strategy for health promotion within families. This refers to a “Model of health associated with an individual’s ability to adapt to a change in health status.” (Falkner, 2018.) This model provides some direction and assists families with setting goals for Caregiving.

Being in a family system means that there will be opportunities for growth and for change. The nurse can leverage these opportunities when explaining how families can adapt to the care of themselves and their loved ones successfully. Keeping a positive outlook while patients attempt to make changes that are difficult or frightening, can be of the utmost importance.

It is very important for the nurse to assess a patient and their family member’s learning styles. The nurse can foster the patient and family’s feelings of confidence and self-control by giving them accurate information, utilizing evidence-based data, and asking the learners to perform return demonstrations of skills. The nurse can foster the patient and family’s feelings of confidence by setting them up for success and celebrating small victories when they do something well. It is important to break things down into manageable parts, and not to overwhelm the patient and family with too much information and confusion. The nurse can definitely assist the patient by giving the education that is needed in the moment, and by reinforcing education with the patient and family member at a later time. The ability to adapt and change will assist the patient in making overall healthcare improvements. (Wright and Leahey, 1994.)

Michelle Ball, the idea of family health is significant because a person’s health and the actions they take to safeguard their health have an impact on the whole of the family unit. The nurse will provide the family with counseling through the many forms of care that are available. Members of the family collaborated, communicated, and provided care for one another in order to establish and maintain individual and family health routines.

Michelle great post! I totally agree with you in that it is indeed very important to assess the patients families learning style when you are providing any kind of teaching or health promotion in the setting. Now since the pandemic seems to be winding down hospitals have relaxed with visitation policies and bedside nurses are getting frequent overnight stays where the family or 1 or 2 of the patients family members usually spent the night in the hospital with their loved one and if you work night-shift like I do I am not used to family members visiting since the last 2 years. So no I have to keep in mind the aspect of learning style of the family and assess and provide proper teaching and health promotion to the family and patients to ensure quality health care.

Health is a state of complete physical , mental and social well being and not merely the absence of diseases and infirmities. Family is an integral part of the society and it affects the behaviors and beliefs of the individual. Family health is a social economic process whereby the health of family members is maintained. It is identified as a dynamic and complex construct consisting of multiple members interactions within and across the boundaries of households nested within social contexts.

The concept of family health is important in healthcare promotion because it helps to identify some genetic traits which can predispose patients to certain diseases. Members of certain populations have same traits which can be transmitted from one generations to another and understanding this helps to elicit the possible diseases,

Family health history can identify people with a higher than usual chances of having common disorders such as heart diseases high blood pressure, stroke, certain cancers and type 2 diabetics.

The nurse uses good communication skill, assessment, environmental and behavioral strategies to promote the health of the patient

Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

I definitely agree with your point that health is a state of well-being. Health is a lot more than the absence of illness. “Today, three types of definitions of health seem to be possible and are used. The first is that health is the absence of any disease or impairment. The second is that health is a state that allows the individual to adequately cope with all demands of daily life (implying also the absence of disease and impairment). The third definition states that health is a state of balance, an equilibrium that an individual has established within himself and between himself and his social and physical environment.” (Sartorius, 2006, p.1)

Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

The concept of family health is important because it goes hand in hand with family health promotion and has impact on health of families. As we discussed in topic 1 there are various families from the traditional family, to the nuclear family, to single-parent, etc. Each family members have some effect of each other and in this case we are talking about health promotion and healthy lifestyle. Gordon’s functional health patterns show a relationship between health behaviors within a family. For example with nutrition you can have family knowledge of nutrition and healthy food choices and that will in turn lead to better and more healthier eating habits of individuals within the family and less frequency of eating out or fast food meals (Green, 2018).

Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

Understanding the family history is very important in health care promotion and disease prevention because family members share certain traits and genetic factors which predisposes them to certain disease. Examples are family history of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes. This will guide the nurse in client education and evaluation

Family health contains information about the individual as well as his or her immediate family members. A family health history is of critical significance. A comprehensive medical history should contain details on the patient’s children, brothers and sisters, parents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grandparents, and cousins. Additionally, the history should include information about three generations of the patient’s relatives (Barnes et al ,2020). Because family members are able to assist and nourish one another throughout all phases of life, the family unit is an unrivaled player in the process of preserving health and avoiding sickness for the purpose of public health. Health promotion is viewed as disease prevention to reduce chronic health conditions and promote a healthy state (Grand Canyon University,2018). The main objective is disease prevention rather than disease treatment. Nurses play a crucial role in providing patients with health promotion education and resources. There are numerous strategies that can be used to improve patients’ overall health quality, including therapeutic communication and assessment skills. Nurses personalize the patient’s plan of care using these tools in order to enhance patients’ health (Kumar& Preetha,2012). The goal of health promotion is to improve people’s health in a holistic manner by encouraging participation from a wide range of stakeholders and putting an emphasis on multisectoral strategies. The prevention of illness and the promotion of overall health are two areas in which nurses play a significant role. As nurses, it is expected of us to act as representatives of health and wellness. Nurses can provide information regarding health and wellbeing as well as direct people to the appropriate local services.

I completely agree with you saying that the family plays a very pivotal role in an individual’s health maintenance. “Patient- and family-centered care is an approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among health care providers, patients, and families..In patient- and family-centered care, patients and families define their “family” and determine how they will participate in care and decision-making” (Institute for Patient and Family-Centered Care, n.d., p.1) When applied corrects patient- and family-centered care give family members the opportunity to rely on one another to follow and reach optimal health outcomes.

Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

As a Labor and Delivery nurse I find myself advocating for the entire families health and nutrition. Teaching the importance of staying healthy (health prevention) by eating healthy, increasing fluid intake and exercise. Teaching a new mother how to breastfeed also encompasses the family as we teach the mother to fuel herself by eating right and drinking water, so she can in turn give the proper nutrition to her baby, I also encourage the partner of the patient to eat healthy to have the energy to help care for the new mother and their new baby.

I quite agree with you that family history should includes the extended family like the uncles, and grandparents and not just the immediate nuclear family This is important because the patient shares genetic properties with the uncles and grandparents. This knowledge helps us to elicit potential diseases like schizophrenia which can escape generations and passed on to second or third generations

I thinking trying to gather 3 generation of family medical history is kind of difficult nowadays because of the way the system is set up newer generation don’t necessarily always have a close relationship with the old ones due to most families putting the elderly into nursing home rather than keeping them at home with them. And many rarely visit on a regular basis

The concept of family health is important because it affects the individuals and the family as a whole system or unit. Interventions are the actions taken to change an outcome in a given a situation (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). To improve family function, interventions are planned for their impact on these three areas: cognitive, affective, and behavior. According to Wright and Leahey (1994), the most dramatic change occurs within the family’s beliefs, or the cognitive area. Nurses must keep in mind that change in one area influences change in another area, just as change for or in an individual affects the whole family unit. As beliefs about their health and each other change, families’ behaviors will change (Wright & Leahey, 1994). Some strategies for health promotion include finding a family’s strengths and encouraging families to use them in new and different ways to face their current health challenges (Wright & Leahey, 1994). Interventions should also be within a families’ ethnic and religious belief systems according to Wright and Leahey’s article (1994). Solid interviewing techniques will also assist the nurse in determining appropriate strategies for the individual and the family with health promotion or gaining more control over and improving their health.

The types of questions nurses ask in a family interview are typically of two types: linear and circular (Wright & Leahey, 1994). In their article, Wright and Leahey (1994) explain linear questions are used to gather information about a problem and to correct behavior, while circular questions help explain the problem or reveal the families’ understanding of the problem. Nurses are encouraged to develop techniques for asking circular questions in order to help facilitate changes in behavior of the individual and the family as a whole. This type of questioning enables the individuals within the family to come up with solutions or strategies to help themselves meet the health challenges they are facing. Working together, the nurse and family determine the interventions to best accomplish their goals for health promotion.

Title: NRS 429 Topic 2 DQ 2 Why is the concept of family health important?

It is important to incorporate the family health concept in health promotion. Every individual is part of a family which influences their beliefs and behavior. Involving the family when developing care plans for a patient will not only give the patient support but also have the teachings be reinforced and new habits will form. The family plays a major role in the lifestyle choices for instance the type of food they eat, social activities they engage in or how they understand what health means to them. According to Green, S. (2018) “The health of the family influences the health of the individual.”

There are many strategies for health promotion. When considering which strategy is best for the patient and family, the nurse must do an assessment. The does an interview to determine how the family functions. How they view health, who is the decision maker or head of the family. Their physical environment and their social background influence their decision on healthy lifestyles. Some people are followers, they depend on the healthcare worker to make the decision for them. Others are decision makers they take the initiative to make the change. When the nurse does the initial interview, they will interpret what type of persons they are dealing with and what strategy they will use to promote health. Having the patient and family involved in the teaching allows them the to have a sense of fulfillment. They will feel more accomplished if the ideas come from them than if it was given to them. Family involvement strengthens the process of change and gives the patient confidence to overcome the change. Green, S. (2018) says “The nurse assesses for health promotion and education needs that also align Healthy People health topics and objectives, such as access to health services, preventive services, environmental quality, and mental health, in order to seek healthy outcomes for the family”
