Professional Nursing organizations are important in promoting education, unity, teaching, and support. “As a profession, nursing has a long history of engaging in advocacy to strengthen and advance the profession, patient care and outcomes, health systems, and public policy. Nursing organizations in particular, continue to serve as critical platforms for policy advocacy—the practice of engaging in political processes to initiate, enact, and enforce structural and policy changes to benefit populations.” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2020) The American Nurses Association’s (ANA) website offers education, information, and ways to get involved in helping in the nursing world. ANA’s website is full of information to inspire nurses to get a higher level of education, certification routes to better a nurse’s career, and inspirational stories to help motivate nurses to improve. “Ana believes that advocacy is a pillar of nursing. Nurses instinctively advocate for their patients, in their workplaces, and in their communities; But legislative and political advocacy is no less important to advancing the profession and patient care.” (AMA 2024) Learning policies and education is a way to help ensure a long career in the nursing field. The ANA had resources to help teach, uplift, and strengthen a nurse to improve and be a better nurse.

Professional organizations support the field of nursing in a variety of ways. Some ways are promoting safety, health, and wellness for nurses in the field. At all levels of the government, many lobby on the behalf of nurses and healthcare. All with the goal of improving healthcare and developing high nursing practice standards. Critical levels of generating energy flow, creating new ideas, and proactive work are crucial to maintain a healthy profession that advocates for its patients (The State University of New York, 2021). Unified voices solidify the power nurses maintain in the profession. One specific organization that is used in my state, Illinois, is The American Nurses Association. Nurses are mandated reporters of anyone providing unethical, illegal, or unsafe care to individuals. Any violations will result in consequences that depend on place of employment unless further steps must be taken involving higher chains of commands. Entities including these developing standards not only is the American Nurses Association throughout the United States, but the Legislative Reference Bureau entails updated databases of Illinois Compiled Statues regarding the Nursing Practice Act (Legislative Information System, 2023). All these standards of practice influence the nursing process here in Illinois because it requires honesty from each individual nurse. We are all human. Mistakes are made. When mistakes are known, faculty can implement safer ways of avoiding these mistakes and preventing new ones.
