The nurse licensure compact agreement establishes continuity in requirements for licensure which ensures public protection in nursing care.  I was familiar with this as I live in a compact state (AR),  but my original nursing license was from a non-compact state (NY-currently pending compact status).  The benefits of this  for the nurse is that practice options are open for movement to other states that are also enrolled in the nurse licensure compact agreement.

What I found interesting in the video was what happens when a nurse moves from a compact state to a non-compact state.  A nurse must apply to the non-compact state for licensure BUT the previous compact license is no longer in effect (Nurse Licensure Compact, n.d.).  I would think that for a non-compact state trying to recruit nurses, not being a part of the compact agreement would limit potential employees.  For me, I would want to practice in a compact state and I would most likely re-evaluate a potential move to a non-compact state.

Thank you for bringing out the relationship of informatics with the digitization of healthcare including telehealth. It is hard to believe how far we have come in medicine, including patients being reviewed by a “doctor in the box”. I have had the opportunity to work in a small facility in Nebraska whose patients would refer to the telehealth doctor as the “doctor in the box.”

I agree with you that COVID-19 brought about a lot of changes in practice not only for doctors, but the Advance Registered Practice Nurses (APRNs). Medicare, which oversees the health insurance for the vulnerable population, was not left out in the changes that were witnessed in the healthcare sector. With the invention of the APRN role, even though they practiced to their full extend by offering both curative and preventive services, Medicare and some insurances were having problems in reimbursing some of the services they offered (Kleinpell et al., 2023). Through the changes in Medicare Kleinpell et al. (2023) observed that different states including Louisiana have the Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNP) attending to initial Medicaid patients besides taking the role of Primary Care Providers (PCPs). This regulations changes have also benefited childbearing women in Louisiana whose services now must be covered in all the health plans. I strongly believe that More agencies will continue recognizing the invaluable roles of the APRNs which will probably result in the expansion of their scope of practice.

I hope things are going well during our first few weeks of class! I would like you to take a minute and think about the goals you have for this class. When we have specific and targeted goals, we are better able to determine when and how meet our objectives. Please respond to this topic with:

  • A prioritized list of 3 to 5 goals for your personal learning for this course.
  • Include a brief description of how you see yourself accomplishing your goals.
  • Let me know what I can do to help you achieve your outlined goals.

While this is not a graded or required activity, I find that it is helpful to outline what you want to personally gain from a course. Also, your responses will count towards your participation, as long as they are substantive in nature (at least 100 words long).

I have many goals for this course and graduate school in general. My biggest goal is to fully engage and to absorb as much information as possible. I have limited knowledge on the information in this class, but I am hoping that I will have a great understanding by the end of this class. To keep myself accountable, I want to be actively working on schoolwork at least 5 days per week, whether this is doing assigned reading, discussion posts, or other assignments. There is a lot of information to learn in this class, and I want to get the absolute most out of it.

My next biggest goal is to take the time to read my classmates discussion posts, even if I am not replying to them. Everyone within this class has a unique background within nursing, and it is always great to learn from a different perspective. My fellow classmates have a very diverse background of knowledge and expertise, and I am very excited to learn from their work experiences.

My final goal is to try my absolute hardest to get straight A’s. I am aware that getting an A in every class is not the most important thing, but I am easily motivated by grades. I have always been a student who is disappointed to get anything less than an A, but this is obviously a much harder program, and I am working 50+ hours per week, so it could definitely be a challenge. I am excited and nervous to see what the remainder of this class and program will bring.

My goals for this class are as follows:

Make a consorted effort to respond to the weekly DQ and other weekly assignment whether its a graded or non graded responses with in the specific time allotted. For I know if I were to submit a late assignment I would probably loose points, every points are important to me.

Learn as much as possible from this and subsequent classes so when I finish with school and become a nurse leader with a higher degree I can be effective and bring about change on the unit where I work and the patient population I serve.

Pass all my classes with decent grades for me grade is very important it is reflective of application dedication to the course of study.

Read all my classmates posts for iI know I will definitely come away with some new information which iI can incorporate in my daily practice.

I can achieve my goals by a few simple alteration in my time. I am prepared to cut back on the over time I generally work, focus on reading the outlined chapters and other material that might be helpful, spending less time on my phone looking at nothing of importance and lastly probable taking less road trips

One of my goals in this class is to make a good effort to make discussion posts weekly and respond to my classmate’s posts. I will try to be active in the online environment.

My second goal, though this is my first time doing online schooling, I will do my best to grasp every knowledge I can so that I can be successful in my field. Since I started in the ICU, I have been telling myself no matter how long I work in this unit, I will be like a “sponge” where I gather and understand everything I needed to learn.

Lastly, my goal is to get good grades in this subject. I will do my best to read, write and learn what I can.

True goals are important in ensuring we meet our objectives. In this regard, my first goal is academic success. In order to achieve this goal, I am working extra hard. That is, I am making good use of the class resources. I have also invested in proper time management in order to ensure that I meet all the requirements necessary for my academic excellence. Second, I would like to achieve knowledge and skills from this class which will be essential in my nursing profession. In order to ensure that the knowledge learned from this class assists in my profession, I have been and will be attempting to associate the lessons to my practice as an advanced nurse practitioner. Assisting my classmate achieve their academic goals is my third goal. As a result, I have taken a personal commitment to read and fully participate in class discussions.

On what you can do to assist, I would like to commend you for your valued feedback on the weekly discussion as well as on the assignment. In my opinion, this feedback will help me improve in my studies and overall academic success.

My goal in life is simple- to make a difference in my life and the life of others that I have met and touched. Nursing is my way to do that whether it be at the bedside, in nursing leadership, or as a nurse practitioner in the future. My life’s journey was never easy. It was peppered with a lot of trials and hardships that sometimes I can’t imagine I was able to overcome but here I am emerging to be stronger than ever.

The reason why I went back to school is to change the trajectory of my nursing career. I feel that the bedside is still a fun and challenging nursing experience but it is too stressful. My coworkers say that I don’t seem to be bothered as I take care of critical patients. I can still keep my composure and I can still critically think despite the odds. But I am getting tired of the many issues in healthcare and I am trying to learn ways to improve our nursing career. I worked in a prominent healthcare institution in New York. Clientele or patients come from all backgrounds, cultures, and financial statuses. Some are elites and others are illegal immigrants living in New York. They have one thing in common and that is their hearts are failing and we do everything to send them back home to their families. I work with the best minds in the world. They can be the best cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeons, and other experts in their field of specialties. I also worked with fellows and residents that are still specializing in the field of their choice and my fellow healthcare workers. In other words, New York is already stressful in itself and I am working in one of the most stressful fields in the world of healthcare. I am not complaining but sometimes the stress gets to me. I also have a lot of family and personal struggles that compound my life. Having said that, I am delighted to take the challenge of this online learning journey with all of you and I hope to become stronger every step of the way. It is my pleasure to learn from your answers and experiences to every question and with our professor’s guidance. I am positive that my learning journey will be an engaging and enriching one.

I work a lot of long hours every day. I squeezed in my reading every hour to finish the books assigned to us and as I move along I complete my assignments as well. I tend to be hard on myself when it comes to learning which I have acquired since my preschool days so you can just imagine how hard I am now on myself if I am missing anything. But I always tell myself that life and learning are a journey and the challenges are the ones that make me stronger and level-headed. I make an effort to learn every step of the way as I navigate my way through online learning. Of course, passing my classes with good grades is paramount to success and to accomplish that I need to learn effective time management skills. I work a lot of overtime because of financial constraints and family responsibilities that are so important to me. To be successful in my challenges, I follow these guiding principles:

Learn an evidence-based nursing practice to affect healthcare outcomes by providing excellent nursing care through direct and indirect care. My focus is on adult and geriatric populations but I also focus on young pediatrics with congenital heart conditions. I am committed to implementing good nursing judgment in my cardiology area of nursing practice. I am also focused on sustainable cost-effective nursing care plans that can transform healthcare despite the odds of financial and political realities, especially in New York. I would like to become part of the people who can affect change that will strengthen our nursing foundation for future nursing practice and most importantly, be able to contribute to the clinical strengthening of population healthcare outcomes for our nation’s health and future. Thank you.

Thank you for posing this question. I, too, believe that goal-setting and intentionality are important for getting the most out of an experience. My goals for this course are aligned with my goals for the entire program. First, I want to further my education and formalize all of the experience that I’ve gained over my 24 year career into concrete concepts and organize my own understanding of all that I’ve experienced. My goal in doing this is to be able to use this experience and knowledge to promote change and improvement in health care and better support of the nursing profession. To that end, I will engage fully with all the content that is presented, as I know that this is where I’ll gain the knowledge necessary to become an agent for change. Secondly, I aim to learn from and connect with my peers. I’m a firm believer in the power of experience. It is a gift for me to gain additional knowledge from others’ experiences in this group. Lastly, my goal is to improve my fluency with APA formatting. This is currently a stumbling block for me. I expect that with continued practice through this course, I will get better at using it.

A couple of years ago, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, my attention was drawn to the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC), particularly when travel nurses from different states rallied to support hospitals facing staffing challenges. Motivated by this, I pursued license endorsement for both non-compact and compact nursing states, resulting in my possession of three individual nursing licenses.

In my perspective, expanding the reach of the NLC to additional states holds significant promise, particularly in addressing the persistent dilemma of nurse supply and demand imbalances. This issue often leaves hospitals in a precarious staffing position, struggling to meet the escalating healthcare needs. The compact provides a timely and effective solution, enabling healthcare professionals to swiftly move across state borders to areas facing critical shortages.

Moreover, the potential benefits extend beyond the immediate demands of healthcare facilities. The NLC presents a unique opportunity for nurses who aspire to gain diverse professional experiences in different states without being relocated from their primary place of residence. This flexibility aligns with the evolving dynamics of the healthcare workforce and allows nurses to contribute their expertise where it is most needed.

A crucial advantage of the compact lies in streamlining administrative processes for nurses. It alleviates the burden of maintaining multiple nursing licenses, a task that often involves complex renewal procedures and adherence to distinct continuing education requirements mandated by each state. This not only reduces the financial strain on nurses but also ensures a more efficient and standardized licensure system. According to Puente (2017), nurses benefit from a multistate license for a variety of reasons. nurses need reason is that a nurse will not need individual licenses in each state where the nurse needs authority to practice. Obtaining individual licenses is a burdensome, costly, and time-consuming process to achieve portability and mobility. Nurses are required to be licensed in the state where the recipient of nursing practice is located at the time service is provided.
