Tobacco control policy has the sole intention of eliminating the grievous harms that smoking tobacco could cause to active and passive smokers. Some of the components of the legislation that make it effective include prohibition of its advertisement and sale to children and ban on smoking within the public spaces (Bauld, McNeill, Hajek, Britton, & Dockrell, 2017). Streets and workplaces are included in the designated areas where tobacco smoking is prohibited. Smoking of tobacco is not only able to harm the individual smoking it, but also the other innocent people who get to inhale the smoke from tobacco.

The regulatory authority to control the cigarette companies by the Food and Drug Administration was, however, accomplished in 2009, under the leadership of President Obama (Gostin, 2009). The critical factor that led to the formulation of the policy is scientific research that proved that smoking could lead to terminal illness, notably, lung cancer to smokers. Additionally, the pressure from the professional institutions such as the American Lung Association has been valuable in issuing professional advice and policy proposal on how the cigarette industry could be regulated. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration is looking into ways of integrating new issues such as e-cigarette into policy to minimize or eliminate harm from the population group likely to be impacted.
