In order for patients to reduce their risk of rehospitalization of cardiorespiratory illnesses they must understand their modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors include tobacco smoking, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy diet (Johnson, 2018). Helping patients identify what modifiable risk factors they have, and what they can do to change it can be empowering (Johnson, 2018). Patients must be educated on how changing these modifiable risk factors can help their cardiorespiratory condition.

Cardiac and pulmonary rehab should be offered to these patients, to help them learn to manage them conditions, as well as providing exercise, support, health modifications, and teaching about them conditions without having to bring them to the hospital. Surprisingly, only 13.9% of patients hospitalized for an acute MI are given cardiac rehab, despite its benefits in reducing mortality (Suaya et al., 2007).
