Everyday nursing requires communication, whether it is with the patient or members of the healthcare team. Effective communication between interprofessional teams, including patients, families and caregivers is important to coordinate care for optimal, quality, and safe health outcomes for patients. The Joint Commision emphasizes “effective communication occurs when needed, is clear, accurate, complete, and is understood by the receiver; the Joint Commission has found that ineffective communication is one of the top three root causes of reported sentinel events;” (Zysk, 2017, para. 4). According to VanDusen (2017), the Joint Commission has made communication between healthcare workers a patient safety goal in an effort to reduce medical errors” (para. 3).
Nurses should be able to coordinate care, expedite patient transitions of care, and mobilize hospital resources without having to constantly be looking for team members to make this happen. Communication technologies such as smartphones, iPads, EHRs, computers on wheels (COWS) and Vocera devices can help facilitate coordination of care between the nurse and the interprofessional team members, cultivating a sense of connection, collaboration, and teamwork.
Smartphones and Vocera badge allow for two-way communication. This allows for instant support, feed-back and team-building. Having a two-way communication allows the clinician to contact a team member while staying with the patient, instead of having to physically find the team member. According to a study, a nurse can save 2.5 hours in a 12-hour shift by using smartphones. This can help reduce physical fatigue and burnout. Considerations must be given to patient confidentiality and privacy when using these devices (Zysk, 2018).
These communication platforms allow the nurse to reach out to the MD who has not entered notes in the EHR, call the blood bank to find out if blood a type and screen is needed for a patient, or contact the pharmacy department to see if a medication is ready for pick up.
Communication technologies used along with interprofessional collaboration can help improve patient care and outcomes, reduce medical errors, start treatment faster, reduce inefficiencies and healthcare costs, and improve staff relationships and job satisfaction (Tigerconnect, 2021).

I agree with you that effective communication among interdisciplinary teams is key to promoting efficient effective care that is devoid of clinical errors and avoids duplication of roles. A two-way communication allows sharing of feedback and taking action on the feedback hence promote multidisciplinary teams approach in care. Multidisciplinary teams’ approach and collaboration have been credited with carrying out delicate medical operations that have achieved great acclaim among the medical practitioners (Taberna et al., 2020). How do can effective and timely communication among members of theses teams be enhanced? This key question has been simplified by the advancement in information and communication technology. I strongly believe the use of smart phones has made this easier, I agree with you that smart phones have saved time and energy such that the members do not need to look out for each other physically. The members of these team can create a WhatsApp group, were there is centralized communication. This will make it faster to discuss and agree on key medical and clinical decisions swiftly and get into action as a well-coordinated team (Woods et al., 2019).

Communication between interprofessional teams is imperative to successfully care for patients as well as the smooth functioning of our healthcare systems. Through the use of informatics and communication devices, healthcare technologies have been shown to improve patient safety. Through the use of electronic health records (EHRs) as well as computerized provider order entry (CPOEs)., errors have been reduced. Physicians and all members of the team are able to read and further document and communicate with all members. Although some technological platforms do not allow for conversation like communication, their documentation is a way of communicating with one another.
The National Patient Safety Foundation created a list of the top patient safety issues such as wrong site surgery, falls, and diagnostic errors in 2016 (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018). “Some technologies that promote patient safety include wireless monitoring, clinician alerts, point of care applications, apps and radiofrequency identification applications” (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018, p. 304). The use of these technological advancements may have been routine to us nurses and providers now, but they have not always been around.
Although technology has been shown to reduce the amount, of medical errors, the success ultimately is in the hands of the user. For example , providers may all have the tools to successfully communicate with one another, but if they are not used appropriately, patient safety is not always the best. According to the Joint Commission, “the overall safety and effectiveness of technology in healthcare ultimately depends of its human users, and any form of technology can be a negative impact on the quality and safety of care” (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018, p. 303).
Recently, the hospital in which I am working started using an application called Microsoft Teams. Essentially, it is an app on your phone or desktop computer that allows all members to engage in team meetings, video chats, instant messaging, so much more. Depending on ones’ job title or expertise of work, members may be added into different groups for a more specialized communication. The beauty of this product is it allows members of the team to communicate from remote locations times of during these challenging COVID-19. I am also able to message and directly contact providers about clinical practice questions in regards to patients I am caring for. We are being told this application is secure and monitored by corporate security, but of course, applications are only as secure as their users.

I do agree with you that the bedrock of quality care and successfully helping the patient recover full health and fitness is effective communication. For effective communication to be achieved, the information should be relayed should be timely, clear and the feedback should also be delivered within the stipulated timeframe. Nurses and physician work together at healthcare facilities and they are required to have good understanding of each other and foster good working relations that will allow effective communication. Research findings show that in cases where the relation of the nurse and physicians are strained there is poor communication hence increased chances of errors of commission and omission (Buljac-Samardzic et al., 2020). The use of google meets and google hangouts will be key if incorporated in multidisciplinary teams’ approach to promote effective communication among the nurses and physicians. This will enhance faster coordination and ensure every detail is recorded for future reference. The use of these technologies to keep the teams working together has been of great help in the recent times with the ravaging covid-19 pandemic that has pushed people to minimize social interactions (Hacker et al., 2020).

Medicine is a team sport, and communication is the foundation of collaboration. Communication technologies enable members of the care team to coordinate with one another, making collaboration easier and care delivery more effective. One communication technology that can be effective is Spectralink phones with nurse call. We use these at my facility, and while we don’t have the latest and greatest models of phones—still using those old brick Nokias!—the system is efficient and promotes quick and easy communication for enhanced patient care. Every member of the patient care team carries a phone with a unique intra-hospital number. As the nurse, I am easily able to call anybody from my respiratory therapist to my provider to my charge nurse and everybody in between. At the same time, our phones are equipped with Nurse Call which wirelessly connects them not only to our patient rooms but to our patient monitors. This way we can not only communicate with other team members, but we can easily get alarm alerts to our phones when our babies are having apnea-bradycardia-desaturation events, or when a parent calls from the room.
Not only does this spectralink system foster increased communication, it also works to fulfil The Joint Commission’s patient safety goal from 2016 to use alarms safely, including ensuring that alarms are heard and responded to on time (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). With the alarms wirelessly transmitted to our phones, we are able to receive our alarms anywhere on the unit with our phone on our hip. We do not need to be continuously watching a centralized monitor or sit at the bedside. This solves one problem but potentially creates another—alarm fatigue—but any technology brings with it a host of implications.

I do totally agree with you that medical care is a team profession and the key to successful teams is effective communication (Chichirez & Purcărea, 2018). An example of a tool recommended to nurses to enhance effective communication is the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) tool. This was developed after realization that the challenges to effective communication among the healthcare teams is not only limited to the disparity in training and reporting but also the validity and reliability of the information is a factor. Therefore, the Joint Commission, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) do strongly recommend the SBAR tool as an effective one on patient handoff (Shahid & Thomas, 2018). The tool guarantees a high degree of validity and reliability in terms of transfer of medical information from one health practitioner to the other hence foster effective communication and success of the medical teams. This has proved to improve quality of care and patient’s safety.

How does information literacy impact nursing informatics in the 21st century? Why is it important for the Advanced Registered Nurse to use qualitative and quantitative published research rather than blogs and opinions?

Quantitative methods are something that can be measured therefore can be counted on with scientific credibility versus the unmeasurable as in blogs and opinions. Qualitative methods dig further by addressing the why and how, both methods use a systematic and scientific method. Blogs and opinions are just that information that is regurgitated based off of someone’s thought process NOT a scientific process. When someone says “do your own research” in healthcare that should mean gathering qualitative, quantitative, peer-reviewed, evidence-based research. Simply by saying “masks should no longer be worn because they are not good for our health, I saw this in an article” is not enough and states an observation from an unknown source. The advanced registered nurse should not just say I’m going to research this but do their due diligence by utilizing that research mentioned to formulate a well-researched and thought out response. When a new process is introduced this writer finds that I ask often where is the research to support this change? What evidence do you have for us in order to follow-up on that research. This has most recently impacted our department as new leaders have decided to change the model of care. The first questions I asked is what I mentioned above in order to dig further into what is being asked of us, understand how the model change can help our department, gain knowledge to the process and so on.

As advanced registered nursing implement practice change, it is crucial that research with qualitative and quantitative data is used. Anytime there is a practice change or new technology APRN’s should be benchmarking and identifying best practices through validated information. APRNs can determine the strength of information by following Evidenced Based practice procedures and evaluating the evidence. The AACN has published a tool to evaluate the quality and strength of information (DeNisco, 2021, p 575). When comparing the level of evidence of quantitative research versus opinions, it shows that using quality and quantitative research provides more validity to the information and practice than expert opinion. Thus, when searching for information to support best practices, APRN’s should seek the highest level of evidence that can be identified when looking for information on best practices and implementation strategies.

Communication technology is now allowing us to respond to one another in real time. When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred communication was key to helping to spread information about the virus. How it spread and the effects on his body. It was key to helping hospitals coordinate with one another especially as places like New York City became hard hit and hospital systems collapsed. Communication in real time help other areas and other hospitals learn what was being done well and what wasn’t being done well for them to incorporate mechanisms to help keep the hospitals afloat and from collapsing. The technologies that we are using today such as cell phones and e-mail have allowed physicians and other health care workers to communicate rapidly versus what we were using decades ago such as beepers or pagers calling via landlines or fax machines. The technology today allows us to communicate even with the public via social media to help educate the population on what’s going on in regards to public health matters and ways for people to protect themselves. “having more access to more interactive technologies, patient-provider communication no longer has to be face-to-face. Instead, in some situations a patient no longer has to be physically present in a physician or a nurse’s office to get information or treatment” (Tian, 2021). COVID-19 pandemic help give rise to telemedicine a former technology that allows patients to communicate with doctors and other healthcare professionals online instead of in person. Nowhere was this more valuable than in the mental health sector where patient seeking mental health services were able to connect with mental health specialists this also allowed mental health specialists to see in number of patients in this certain time frame versus when they had to see them in person allowing them to reach more people and people in different areas of the country.

I enjoyed reading your post. I appreciate that you pointed out how much advancement healthcare has seen with technology during the COVID-19 pandemic. Technology has been incorporated in healthcare for quite some time, but it was showcased on a much higher degree during the pandemic. Communication technologies, such as pagers and voice calls, have been heavily relied on in the past (Government Marketing & Procurement [GMP], n.d.). While these forms of communication are still utilized on a regular basis, extreme advancements have been made to make communication more effective. Incorporating technologies, such as video chatting and telemedicine, allows providers to reach patients that would not have otherwise been possible. Effective communication is critical within healthcare, and these advancements have allowed healthcare members to produce optimal patient outcomes. While the advancement of technology brings many benefits, it also comes with increased risks. Staff must be educated on HIPAA guidelines and communication must be utilized only through secure means.

On this posing question it would seem that pagers are outdated and unnecessary. Cellphones, vocera, tablets etc. will not only notify of a call coming through but you can answer in real time instead of getting a notification and then having to call back from a separate device. Cellphones in essence have replaced pagers, cellphones can get alerts of a call of message that has come through and allows for the user to be able to use the cellphone for other functions as well. This could be to check company email, research information, log into systems and so on. However, reasoning for using pagers over other technologies include not sending PHI over these devices, reduced interference with equipment and reception on the actual device. There are areas within our own facility where cellphones do not have any service.
