I hope you are enjoying the class as we are already to week 4 and coming up to the midpoint of class! I would like you to think back over the last four weeks and contemplate what you would consider your most successful learning experience that you have had so far in class. Think broadly about what this might be. It could be related actual course assignments, or applying ideas learned within your current or future career, or how concepts learned have impacted you and/or your family, or it could be something else. Please share a brief description of your learning experience. If you created goals at the beginning of class, how has this experience helped you as you progress to meet your goals?

I look forward to reading of your experiences! Please note, this is not a required activity (though I hope that you share). Your response will count towards your participation as long as it is substantive.

Personally, I have enjoyed every moment of the class this far. The class has indeed lived to my expectation and has produced a number of successful learning experiences. One such experience I would like to share with you and the class is one that originated while researching and completing the assignment titled Nursing Roles Graphic Organizer. In the course of this assignment, we were required to compare two advanced registered nursing roles on a number of issues such as ethics, education, informatics, and business. In addition to the knowledge I gained in my future role, the task helped me gain a much deeper understanding and appreciation of other advanced nursing roles. Also, this experience has to a great extent enhanced my progress towards achievement of certain personal and professional goals. I look forward to more successful learning experiences.

Its been a great learning experience so far. I have learned a lot of new information as it relates to nursing education, policies governing bodies regulations and scope of practice for advance practicing nurses. Must say I have a new appreciation for these nurses. The first four weeks has been challenging at times since i have been out of school for such along period and online learning platform is relative new to me. I had set goals for myself at the beginning of this class, at times it has been difficult to maintain since I have to juggle to a full time job and family at the same time. Setting goals helped me tremendously to stay on course. I am hoping by the end of this degree program i will come away with a wealth of knowledge, new information and experience that i can effectively incorporate into my daily practice as a nurse leader with good patients outcomes and staff relationships

As strange as it might sound, the most successful learning experience I have had so far in this class is losing some points due to APA format with previous assignments. I am easily motivated by grades and being docked even a fraction of a point gives me drive to try harder and to avoid making the same mistake twice. The content that we have learned in NUR-513 has been incredibly beneficial as well, but APA format has been the hardest thing for me to get a hang of, and I feel pride with the advancement I have made so far. Prior to starting this class, my three main goals were to master 7th edition APA format, put in as much effort as possible to absorb valuable information, and to finish the class with an A. Before starting this class, my knowledge with APA format was sub-par to say the least. I am still far from mastering APA format, but I believe I have made great strides so far and will hopefully keep trending in the same direction. My learning experience has helped my progress to meet my goals because I am fully investing myself into this schooling experience, and it is paying off so far. I look forward to seeing how my goals will progress throughout the second half of this class.

For the past few weeks I have the privilege to learn so much from my classmates and my professor . At the beginning I was a little afraid of not being able to maintain my grades in good standard due to the amount of responsibility that I have at work and family challenges. But throughout the journeys, I regained strength by researching articles, reading peers post and responding to other students post .During the course I’ve now a better understanding of advance nursing roles, scope of practice , and healthcare policies . Also I appreciated even more all healthcare workers who dedicated their lives to serve other’s. It’s not a great duty to fulfill specially when dealing with people with different cultures and backgrounds . Therefore we have to develop the strategy to understand each other while delivering the best care to those that depends on us .

My supervisor and most of my colleagues know that after years of intending to take my master’s degree, I finally took the first step and enrolled. I had to keep telling myself that I can do this, and indeed, I am doing it. Whenever somebody asks me, “How is school?”, I did not expect that my answer would be, “I’m enjoying it.” I really am. I always liked being in school, I like learning new things and most of what I am learning in this course has been relevant to my current role. It has given me a broader insight of our healthcare system and the roles that APRNs play in advancing healthcare. It has inspired me to do little things that I can at this time to work towards that goal. Although employers provide training on cultural diversity, I enjoy reading the subject in the resources provided as well as researching on the subject.

So what have been my favorite learning experience so far? I want to say I liked learning about the different APRN roles and how each role can play a huge part in patient care and advancement of healthcare. It also made me realize what path I want to take moving forward. I also enjoy reading my classmates’ responses. Although I don’t get to read each and every response, I do enjoy reading through most of them. It makes me proud to be part of such a smart group of people.

The most challenging part of my learning experience so far is getting familiar with the APA format. I always make little mistakes here and there causing me to lose points, and I hate losing points. I try to double and triple-check my work, and yet I still end up missing something. Hopefully, by the end of this course, I will see a marked improvement in that area as we will continue to use the APA format in all our writing assignments in future courses as well.

Another valuable lesson that I learned so far is time management. I thought time management would be my biggest challenge but I am managing it pretty well so far. Between my very demanding work schedule, my family, my numerous doctor’s appointments, household chores, and attending work or family gatherings, I still find plenty of time to read some relevant school materials.

My goal is to complete my Master’s degree with no interruptions and I am definitely working hard to make that happen.

I did really enjoy the topics that were discussed these past few weeks. Though it is my first time taking online courses, I think it would still be a challenge for me to adapt to this change. My biggest takeaway from this class is I’ve been practicing more writing and using my knowledge and experiences in the first course of my next degree. I feel like I have been successful in time management and answering the discussion posts. It has also been a good refresher on the APA format since it has been a while since I used it. This subject gave me at least a head start on what I have applied for and what I have wanted to be.

Nursing theories play a crucial role in guiding the evolving field of nursing, especially in the current dynamic healthcare landscape. They serve as essential tools for nurses, providing a framework to navigate the complexities of patient care and make critical decisions in the responsible and compassionate management of human lives. It is a framework of concepts and purposes intended to guide nursing practice at a more concrete and specific level (Wayne, 2023). Nurse scholars and leaders devoted considerable effort to identifying the core or essence of nursing, to constructing theoretical formulations that would reflect this core, and to promoting further inquiry, as well as theory-based nursing practice (DeNisco, 2024).

Given that, the human-to-human relation model by Joyce Travelbee has captured my interest. The relationships established between nurses and patients are crucial therapeutic interventions. Professional relationships and interactions are purposeful, being a resource to patients experiencing crises or making transitions, with the intention to produce outcomes beneficial for patients, such as enhanced coping. The relationship between a nurse and an individual or family is a central concept in nursing practice (Pokorny, 2014; Travelbee, 1964, 1971, cited by Parola et al., 2020).

Another nursing theory that has caught my attention is Marilyn Anne Ray’s theory of bureaucratic caring. According to Wayne (2023), improved patient safety, infection control, reduction in medication errors, and overall quality of care in complex bureaucratic health care systems cannot occur without knowledge and understanding of complex organizations, such as the political and economic systems, and spiritual-ethical caring, compassion and right action for all patients and professionals.

When comparing these two nursing theories, they differ in their emphasis. The human-to-human relationship model primarily centers on the significance of the nurse’s connection with the patient. Establishing a professional rapport opens opportunities to enhance care by fostering an environment where the patient feels comfortable sharing information without fear of judgment. This, in turn, enables the nurse to provide personalized and tailored care. Nurses need to develop their practice of nursing as it best applies to the client or person, the environment, the client’s culture, and the nurse’s level of understanding and philosophy (Tourville et al., 2003).

Conversely, the theory of bureaucratic caring is more intricate as it involves various categories. According to Wayne (2023), it challenges participants in nursing to think beyond their usual frame of reference and envision the world holistically while considering the universe as a hologram.

I think the theory of bureaucratic caring would be relevant in my future role in nursing informatics. As mentioned earlier, a primary example would be the reduction in medication errors, achievable through the implementation of a barcoding medication administration system. Nurses are mandated to use this system to enhance patient safety and prevent medication administration errors. Informatics nurses keep concepts of care and patient outcomes at the forefront by applying concepts of nursing theory during management of data. They help ensure that data and information quality remain crucial aspects of current and emerging analytics and resulting outcomes (American Nurses Association, 2022).

Title: Compare and contrast two nursing theories NUR 513

Jean Watson is renowned for her Developmental Theory, particularly her emphasis on human caring in nursing. Influenced by various philosophies and cultural experiences, Watson integrated 10 factors into her theory, essential for therapeutic healing in nursing relationships. Introducing the Trim concept, she highlighted the importance of caring over medical procedures, asserting that it should be the central focus of nursing. Watson believes that caring involves a reciprocal understanding between the nurse and the patient. Her Theory of Human Caring is widely accepted and applied in nursing reminiscent of Florence Nightingale’s essence. On the other hand, Hildegard Peplau another prominent theorist, emphasized the vital role of the nurse-patient relationship which stresses that patients seek assistance for health problems while desiring respect, personal dignity, and attentive listening. He also outlined essential qualities for nurses, including empathy, observation, active listening, application of theoretical concepts, and decision-making on appropriate interventions (Tourville & Ingalls, 2003).

Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory differ in their goals and scopes. Watson’s theory prioritizes holistic well-being and caring as the essence of nursing. Conversely, Peplau’s theory focuses on enhancing nurse-patient relationships during problem-solving. While Watson’s theory addresses broad aspects of holistic care, Peplau’s theory zooms in on the specific dynamics within nurse-patient relationships which aims for patient growth through therapeutic interactions. I find Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring more fitting for my future role, aligning with my cultural values emphasizing holistic, high-quality, and personalized care. Watson’s theory resonates with my belief in the combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, reflecting my vision of delivering compassionate and individualized care.

The 21 Nursing Problems theory will be very relevant to my future role, this theory is based upon patient centered care which is something that is a big part of my current company. I also would like my future company to be centered around patient centered care. I would love to lead by putting the patient first. This theory also molds science and art together in the care of patients because as we all know nursing is not just about the science (Micah, 2023). The other theory that I do not think I will use as much in my future role is the peaceful end-of-life theory. I can see how this theory pertains to my current role, we use this theory especially with our hospice patients. I can not see it being used very frequently in my future role. I do think that if I end up in a higher role in a hospital that the complexity of caring for terminally ill patients will come up at some point or another. Although, I think that the 21 nursing problems theory will be used a little more on an average basis for me. There are some similarities between the two theories, however. Both are centered more around the patient and that is something that I will take with me. That nursing theories should be the theory of why you do what you do and at the end of the day mine would be the patient.

After reading about a lot of these nursing theories, I can see that my nursing care has integrated many of these theories to create my own specific theory that guides my practice.
