Difference between Leadership and Management
Even though leadership and management are used interchangeably, the roles in the two words are different. As a care provider in the health industry, I view leadership as an art that creates direction and aligns tasks as well as provides a commitment to subjects. Leaders are involved in the formulation of goals and objectives that guide people working for them. On the other hand, management entails providing support for the success of an organization (Al-Sawai, 2013). It involves the allocation of adequate resources as well as facilitating the daily operation of a care center. Whereas leadership is about creating change in an organization, management is about the process of monitoring the activity of a health facility.
An advanced registered nurse can lead an organization by developing new approaches to solve the current problems in the delivery of care. Nurse leaders focus on better ways in which the current practice of care can be improved (Limb, 2016). A registered nurse can also lead by building an interprofessional and intraprofessional relationship to promote the working of health professionals. A nurse leader will also focus on developing the skills of other nurses to optimize patient outcomes. An advanced registered nurse can provide both leadership and management to a health organization. With respect to management, the nurse leader will ensure duties and shifts are assigned to nurses without bias (Al-Sawai, 2013).
As a manager, a nurse leader monitors the activities of the nursing staff to confirm that tasks and activities are accomplished as planned. Nurse leader also addresses personnel issues especially by informing hospital administrators on the issues of safe nurse to patient ratios. This ensures that the current nursing staff is not overwhelmed by the number of patients as this can compromise on the overall quality of care (Limb, 2016). Nurse leaders without management skills may not effectively demonstrate the ability to steer a team towards an organizational goal. As such, both leadership and management are synergistic to each other.

At the clinic I currently work for, we have daily “meetings” every morning. These are not formal meetings, but more of a daily rounding. The manager of the clinic and myself are the leaders of these meetings. We essentially stop at each nurse’s station and discuss staffing, important changes, safety stories, patient reviews, concerns we have, and questions/concerns that staff may have. During these short meetings, we keep everything very informal and don’t necessarily go into it with a set schedule. The traits that we try to display during these meetings are positivity, honesty, and enthusiasm. Additionally, we have quarterly meetings, which are still relatively informal, but more formal than our daily rounding meetings. For our quarterly meetings, we have a set schedule and go over personal and group goals, in-depth training and education, and significant changes that will be taking place. We still try to display the same traits during these meeting, in an attempt to keep staff comfortable and open to sharing their personal opinions.

My current unit holds monthly staff meetings. These meetings are offered both in person and via zoom which allows more participation of our very large staff of 200 nurses. The meetings are led by our department manager who follows a similar agenda each month. She covers hiring and staffing updates, introduces new staff, provides updates on current and future unit projects and provides updates on past issues. When covering each topic, there is opportunity for conversation and input from the staff. The last segment of the meeting is for staff conversation where questions and concerns are encouraged and discussed. Due to the large number of staff involved, our manager is the formal leader. I feel that this model works well for our unit because of our large size and the fact that we also have a culture where input from all nurses is encouraged and “the norm”. People speak up freely and are respected for their input during meetings. In this unit culture, I feel that there are many informal leaders who are involved in subcommittees, formal and informal mentorship and creating an inclusive and supportive work environment.
Our manager is also a very strong leader who practices transformational leadership. She motivates people to rise to a higher level of performance and involvement by modeling excellence, integrity and trustworthiness herself. When concerns are brought up in meetings, she effectively leads those involved to explore and suggest possible solutions and to be involved in seeing solutions through.

I am currently a nurse supervisor in an ICU and oversee a staff of 250 employees. Due to a large amount of staff, we offer our department meetings via zoom on multiple occasions. In addition, the sessions are recorded for the people that are unable to attend. These department meetings are held twice a year. The formal leaders of the unit create the agenda and share necessary information that applies directly to the employee’s role. The agenda items consist of policy changes, manager updates, and a review of the Sirota survey. The goal of these meetings are informative and a forum to create a safe discussion for staff to share what they need to feel supported on the unit. The team participates in the discussion, and many quality improvement projects have come out of this meeting. Many informal leaders lead the discussion, oversee QI projects, and practice change.
In addition to the meeting, the informal leaders have a monthly meeting called the unit-based committee. This group of bedside staff discusses opportunities to support the team. This group is positive and professional and takes the time to understand the big picture. The staff ensures that it is a safe space to speak freely while maintaining professionalism and an open mind. Both meetings have the same objective to support the team to continue to put the patient’s needs first.

In my unit where I work, our nurse manager conducts a formal staff meeting every month. Informal staff meeting or bed hurdles every day. For both meetings, our nurse manager is the leader who conducts the staff meeting. She has an agenda for the formal meeting. In which she explains the goals we should meet, issues and problems that must be addressed, staffing issues, patient and family concerns and medication errors. In between, we can discuss and give opinions and suggestions. She will write it down and make a plan of action. She will ask about our concerns and issues and make sure to solve them before the next staff meeting. She is the nurse manager and leads the meeting. So, all staff can participate and input our suggestions. She adopts transformational leadership in which she encourages and motivates the staff to do the right thing always and encourages us with appreciation and rewards.

Managing is a term that focuses more on observing the work and ensuring that day-to-day challenges and events occur as they are fully planned while leading concentrates on motivating, encouraging, and engaging the people to enable them to contribute toward organizational success. A person who strives to achieve a goal possesses management and leadership skills. Leadership involves more significant team influence whereas managing is purely about team control. Being a team player is one of the qualities that an advanced registered nurse should have in the healthcare sector. Due to their extensive education and clinical practice requirements as healthcare professionals, they carry out all other duties that regular registered nurses carry out.
One of the qualities that an advanced registered nurse should have is the ability to work well in a team environment. An advanced registered nurse should strive to lead well in the healthcare industry by demonstrating leadership skills that influence the quality of improvement activities. The majority of healthcare concerns in a clinical setting can be resolved by continuously learning about standards of care and incorporating other team members in this process (Sabbah et.al, 2020).
In the past, I have served as the team’s manager and leader to encourage and motivate the members to accomplish the company’s objectives. I used the communication technique and scheduled the meeting after noticing that my team lacks interaction behavior and avoids me. I requested the workers to offer their opinions and suggestions on strengthening the company during the meeting, and I promised to reward the best suggestion. Through effective communication, I was able to keep the staff updated on the goals, deadlines, and ongoing work. Additionally, I was open to suggestions for improvement and made myself available to the staff so they could come to me with any questions or issues.
