Assignment: Practicum Experience Essay
Assignment Practicum Experience Essay
Practicum experience offers one a chance to observe and document the way professionals perform their job responsibilities. It also offers one an opportunity to perform tasks under supervision. The purpose of this paper is to use the practicum experience to explain whether the therapeutic theory has changed, how therapeutic approaches from the course were integrated into clinical practice and how one can impact social change.
Before starting the practicum, the ideal therapeutic theory selected was solution-focused therapy. It was selected because it concentrates on getting a present solution and exploring a client hope for the future to get a quicker resolution to the problem at hand (Hoyne & Cunningham, 2019). To use the therapy, one has to know what requires improvement so that appropriate coaching and
questioning is geared towards finding the best solutions. Nevertheless, the therapeutic theory has changed after practicum due to the realization that it affects scheduling since one cannot dictate a regular schedule due to the need to work together with the client to develop weekly appointments. The therapeutic theory has changed to cognitive behavioral therapy because it is also focused on current problems and it can breakdown an overwhelming problem into smaller parts (Hoyne & Cunningham, 2019). It also aids one in helping a client change their negative patterns and get practical ways to improve their state of mind daily. A need to use Erickson’s modelling and remodeling theory has also been created. The theory helps in understanding the client’s world, fosters the use of nursing interventions with unconditional acceptance and considers nursing as self-care model that follows the client perception of the world and adaptation to stressors.

A lesson learned from the course is that no single psychotherapeutic approach is appropriate and effective for all patient, problems, and contexts. The course has also taught that common factors across psychotherapy approaches like therapist empathy, client expectations, and therapeutic alliance accounts for more outcome variance compared to specific effects linked to each psychotherapeutic approach (Westra, Constantino & Antony, 2016). The lessons guided the decisions made in the practicum for instance in week eight of the practicum, it helped in handling a schizophrenic patient who was aggressive. A therapy like existential-humanistic therapy was found to be ideal in handling such cases because of its focus on personal responsibility and individual freedom. Additionally, in week 9 a patient with comorbid mental disorders was evaluated and therapeutic approaches helped in enrolling the patient to individual and group therapy.
The course was also the foundation of generating the goals and objectives of the practicum. The goals of the practicum were to offer comprehensive interview session, assess the mental condition and make an appropriate diagnosis as well as familiarize with nursing and counseling theories. The objectives were to understand various factors like socioeconomic status, cultural and religious beliefs impact psychotherapy, appreciate therapeutic approaches and enhance transitional care plan. The course helped in achieving the outlined goals and objectives in that it offered skills to inspire hope and provide an alternative view of the self and the world. The course equally imparted skills on giving a patient corrective emotional experience that tackles their traumatic experiences (Westra, Constantino & Antony, 2016). Additionally, it guided on how to develop a therapeutic alliance, positive change expectations and qualities like attention, empathy and positive regard.
In terms of social change among mentally ill patients, I would use a recovery-oriented practice. The practice ensures that services are aligned to support the mentally ill patients control their destiny as well as define and achieve their goals while respecting their human rights and sustaining their social and economic inclusion (Bhanbhro et al., 2016). A recovery-oriented practice ensures that patients have a supporting circle of family, friends, and community and it addresses the structural inequalities and barriers that mentally ill patients face. It also fosters collaboration among health professionals and other services to create communities that are free from stigma and discrimination.
In conclusion, due to the practicum experience, the therapeutic theory changed from solution-focused therapy to cognitive behavioral therapy. Additional the course was instrumental in imparting the skills required to approach clients as well as achieving the set goals and objectives. As a way of improving social change among mentally ill patients, a recovery-oriented practice would be the ideal approach to follow.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
