Thus, after starting my career as a nurse, I will have short and long-term goals. During the first years, I will be struggling to keep up with procedures and processes in the real world. Plans for My First Year of Nursing to Maintain Competence as A Professional Nurse

My first year as a professional nurse will help me lay a strong foundation in my career. My plan during the first year of practice is to be an excellent multitasker. A nurse deals with many things at a time and that helps them to assist several patients at a time. Nurse shortage is a real problem in the health sector and therefore my skills as a multitasker will help to provide services to many patients. My plan will also entail showing empathy and paying attention to detail at all times. During the first year, I will build relationships with nurses who are more experienced and who will guide me through my role as a nurse. The nurses will mentor me to succeed in my career. The other plan is to maintain competence as a professional nurse during the first year is to become friends with technology. Technology plays a vital role in patient care. For the next three years of professional nursing, I will be having more responsibilities as a nurse. To maintain competence in my career, I will be working adapting to the broader picture. As such, I plan to be working as an inpatient nurse in the country. I will be

learning patient population health. After working for a few years as a nurse, I plan to have learned some of the issues affecting population health. Consequently, I plan to be giving instructions to patients on how to improve their health (Perry et.al., 2012). I plan to use my critical thinking skills to maintain professionalism in my field of nursing. My other plan entails practicing effective communication in the first three years. During the first three years as a nurse, I will have more responsibilities and communication about patient care will be vital. I will, therefore, use effective communication as a way of improving patient care as well as maintaining professional competence.

After practicing nursing for five years, I plan to further my studies to become a nurse educator. To maintain professional competence as a professional nurse, I will teach and mentor new nurses. Being a nurse educator will be key to maintaining professionalism in the field of nursing. I plan to develop a mentoring relationship where I will mentor upcoming nurses. I also plan to be prepared for more responsibilities as a nurse after ten years. Further, I plan to develop coping skills that will help me adapt to new responsibilities that I will face at the time (Perry et al., 2012).

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength.
