Assignment  Nurse Leader Interviews Paper

Nurse leaders have a critical role in healthcare. Their leadership efforts have an impact on their profession, including employee retention, job satisfaction, patient outcomes, and staff performance. Some nursing leaders are effectual in improving the quality of care, promoting productivity, and bolstering morale of others. Conversely, other nursing leaders can reduce efficiency, demoralize staff, which ultimately results in supervisions on the floor and risk to the patients’ health. The interview involved three nurse leaders with preference for different leadership styles. Caedo is a nurse manager working with the neurological unit. He has preference for the servant leadership style in her interaction with patients and nurses. The second nurse leader who was interviewed is Varla, a nurse manager who has preference for the transactional leadership style. Varla manages a step down unit. The third nurse leader interviewed was Reck, who manages a cardiac unit. He commonly uses the transformational leadership style. This essay analyzes the leadership styles that nurse managers apply in their leadership. In the three leadership styles, the aim is to take charge of processes and ensure that everyone is working as expected. In addition, the paper also discusses the questions presented to the nurse leaders as part of the interview, as well as their responses.

Discussion

Servant Leadership – Caedo

Assignment  Nurse Leader Interviews Paper
Assignment: Nurse Leader Interviews Paper

Caedo is a nurse manager responsible for managing a neurological unit. I chose Caedo because I have known him for some time and he has been my mentor as a leader. The first interview question related to his role in the unit. He said that his roles include ensuring the right financial performance of his unit, as well as overseeing the quality of nursing services. He is expected to promote family and patient centered care model. He works closely with providers including physicians to improve delivery of patient care, including treatment implementation, diagnostic workup, and patient access. Similarly, he works with the unit employees to set up priorities and implement new processes and changes. The day-to-day operations of the unit depends on Caedo’s effectiveness in managing staff. In his job, he interacts with medical students, fellows, and residents and aims to ensure the best care and profession growth of staff. For the medical students, he has to ensure that the unit provides an evidence-based environment. He maintains a healthy learning and work environment. He ensures that new staff members are trained adequately. He sees to it that existing staff benefit from ongoing training. He has another role in ensuring adequate coverage in the clinical area. He maintains the right staffing levels and justifies any changes in staffing.

The next interview question for Caedo was about his most preferred leadership style. He said that he applies servant leadership most of the time. He said he works without expecting to be praised or recognized. The servant leader works without any ambitions to ascend to a higher position because he or she aims to serve others. Caedo said he gets satisfaction from helping other employees become more competent while ensuring that residents get the best care. Servant leadership necessitates communicating directly with the followers to understand their potential, goals, desires, needs, and abilities. He uses this understanding to help the followers realize their potential.

I asked Caedo what happens when he helps others realize their potential through increased competence. He said some have left the unit and are working elsewhere, but he is happy because they are serving others. He said that he takes his personal integrity seriously and establishes long-term relationships with staff members who work in the unit. Servant leaders do not only work in their facility but seek to extend services and help to the community within which they operate. Servant leadership entails creating team members, solving employee problems, and asking the opinion of employees or followers (Northouse, 2012 ). The interview implied that servant leadership is about putting the people first and actively participating in what others do. According to Caedo, followers easily trust him as their leader unlike authoritarian and other styles where followers tend to fear their leader.

Transactional Leadership – Varla

The next interview involved Varla, a nurse manager in a step down unit. She prefers to use the transactional leadership style. I interviewed her because I have understood her well having worked with her in the past because she got her leadership position. I

asked about her role in the facility, and she said that she was involved in administering, evaluating, and planning twenty-four hour operation of her unit. She assigns duties to personnel depending on the needs of patients. She allocates staff based on availability and needs. She is in charge of ensuring the delivery of evidence-based nursing care in accordance with nursing procedures and policies. She guides the nursing staff in different nursing processes. She is involved in monitoring customer satisfaction with health care and patient’s clinical outcomes. She provides corrective actions and well-timed interventions as required by her unit. She is engaged in coordination of the operational facets of patient care while working closely with the administrative support service.

I asked her to explain why she preferred the transactional leadership style and she said that it gets things done quickly and in an organized way. She only has to use her position as a leader to ensure that things were done as planned by the medical unit. She expected adherence to orders, which saved time that would be spent in too much negotiation with followers. She believes in rewarding those who perform well and punishing those who fail to stick to the rules. This meets the definition of transactional leadership by Khan, et al. (2015). In this context, everyone gets treated fairly if he or she performs well and does the job well. I asked her whether some of the employees fear her and she said a few feared her style of leadership but learn to work with her over time. I asked whether her style would help her create other nurse leaders, and she replied that those interested in learning eventually develop leadership capabilities.

Transformational Leadership – Reck

The final interview involved Reck, who manages a cardiac unit. Reck works in acute settings, and I interviewed him because I wanted to know what leadership entailed when there is too much pressure. After asking about his role, he said he is responsible for 24-hour daily operations of his unit, which involve supervising personnel, patient outcomes, and staff performance. He is responsible for staff retention and procurement and ensuring regulatory compliance. He evaluates yearly performance assessments and conducts work performance. He coordinates and delegates responsibility for completion of departmental tasks, activities, and projects. He helps with the implementation of the unit’s strategic initiatives and assesses, responds to, and identifies problems and issues affecting ability to realize objectives and goals. Reck prefers to use the transformational leadership style in his practice.

I asked Reck why he liked to use transformational leadership, which he responded that it is possible to get things done even in his absence because he delegates some responsibilities. He said that his unit requires strict adherence to deadlines, and delegation was a suitable way to ensure that everything is completed on time. He said this style helps maintain relationships with the nursing staff. Indeed, this style helps leaders cultivate healthy relationships because followers are involved in major activities and decisions (Naseer, Perveen, Afzal, & Waqas, 2017). The style also implies mutual realization of goals because most employees are involved in projects (Renjith, Renu, & George, 2015).

In conclusion, I found several similarities in the leadership styles of Caedo, Varla, and Reck. The three nurse leaders want jobs done in the right way, with the emphasis being on patient care. Nonetheless, the three styles differed in some aspects. Servant leaders do not command authority because their goal is to serve. Transformational leaders command authority yet they are respected because of their ability to bring change through their followers. Transactional leaders command authority but are mostly feared by their followers. Throughout the interview, I missed the opportunity to ask some questions to the nurse leaders. I would have liked to find out why Caedo wanted to be a servant yet he was in the leadership position. I would have wanted Varla to tell me what might happen in the future if she was to work under the leadership of a transactional leader like her. Finally, I would have wanted Reck to tell me how he deals with the time that is possibly wasted in finding the right people to take up delegated tasks. Overall, the interview experience helped me realize the role of leadership in getting things done and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.

You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
