Title: Assignment: Becoming an Advocate Essay

The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines advocacy as the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal. Nursing advocacy has been an important nursing role since the days of Florence Nightingale. One of the responsibilities of every nurse is to advocate for patients, families, and the community to improve their quality of care (Gerber, 2018). Nurses have the opportunity to positively impact their profession by advocating for the nursing profession (Tomajan, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to describe my advocacy experience and discuss the values of advocacy and my future role in advocacy.

In my former organization, I advocated for the increment of professional development programs for nurses. I observed that nurses in the organization rarely attended professional development programs, and only a few were advancing their nursing education. I sought opinions from nurses on how the organization can improve professional development for nurses. I prepared a list of the reasons that contribute to inadequate nurses’ professional development programs and solutions to the issue. I approached the hospital management, communicated the issue, and presented the proposal on how to enhance professional development for nurses. I influenced nurses in the organization to support the proposal. The hospital management reviewed the proposal, and within six months, there was a marked increase in the number of nurses enrolling in professional development programs.

I advocated for increment in nurses’ professional development programs because there was a need for nurses to advance their

knowledge and skills in the dynamic nursing profession. Nurses also needed to be updated with the new guidelines in the diagnosis and management of diseases since they were involved in direct patient care. Besides, a majority of training programs in the organization were mostly physicians-based, and a few focused on the nurses, which significantly disadvantage the nursing profession. Nurses were also allocated fewer slots in the education advancement programs facilitated by the hospital, which led to only a few nurses advancing their education to either BSN or APN level. Enhancing nurses’ education level and skills would result in the delivery of better patient care and eventually, better patient outcomes.

Values of Advocacy

Empathy is a primary value that drives someone to be an advocate. In nursing, understanding patients’ conditions and their expectations create a nurse-patient relationship (Davoodvand, Abbaszadeh & Ahmadi, 2016). The relationship often presents itself in patient advocacy as the nurse strives to improve the patient’s outcomes. Compassion is a response to the agony of others and results in trying to help them. People with compassion often try to help those suffering by advocating for their rights and wellbeing (Davoodvand, Abbaszadeh & Ahmadi, 2016). Individuals who uphold the value of justice have the drive to defend the rights of others. In nursing, justice leads to a drive of wanting to protect patients’ and universal rights, defend patients’ interests, supporting their decisions, and being the voice for the vulnerable.Assignment Becoming an Advocate Essay

Future of Advocacy

In my future role as a nurse leader, I would like to advocate for patients with mental illnesses. The patients are often disadvantaged due to the social stigma associated with the condition. Their health needs are often not met entirely, and this is evidenced by the few institutions offering mental health care (Varghese, 2015). This has contributed to the deterioration of their conditions and also fail to seek treatment due to stigma. I will advocate for the increment of mental health programs and facilities offering mental care. I will also advocate for community health awareness programs on mental health to reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses (Varghese, 2015). I can accomplish this by writing proposals to the state department of health to improve infrastructure in mental health institutions to enhance the delivery of care. I will also influence and collaborate with mental health institutions and public health offices to pressure the state government to develop facilities that will enhance psychiatric care.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
