It has always been my dream to be a certified midwife to provide care to women during pregnancy and labor since I joined nursing school. I believe that every woman deserves a healthy pregnancy and outcome, and this can be achieved by the provision of quality pregnancy and obstetric care. Women and their newborns further deserve quality care in the postnatal period to ensure healthy motherhood and development of children. To provide quality midwifery care, midwives should receive high-quality training on providing care to women during and after pregnancy and in newborn care (Weisband et al., 2018). Midwives are the backbone of reproductive and child health and are involved in the direct care of the women and newborn, including diagnosing and managing diseases prevalent in the population.

midwifery care, including conducting health assessments, diagnosing, and managing patients with obstetric conditions (Christiansen & Champion, 2018). I plan to become a nurse advocate for pregnant women from minority ethnic and racial groups at the local and state level for the women to receive quality antenatal care. Advocating for women from minority groups will help reduce health disparities such as complications during pregnancy, maternal mortality, intrauterine fetal death, and fetal mortality (Petersen et al., 2019). A postmaster degree in midwifery will provide an opportunity to learn the factors that result in poor pregnancy outcomes among the minority groups and ways that the poor outcomes can be improved.

The midwifery program will improve my skills, particularly obstetric care skills, which will help attain my goals of becoming a midwifery specialist. One of my professional goals is to be a nurse leader in the management of women during pregnancy, labor, and the postnatal period. I believe that I will acquire leadership skills that I will use to lead the healthcare team in the management of pregnant and postpartum women (Christiansen & Champion, 2018). Being a post-midwifery degree holder will give me a leadership role in my current organization in the midwifery department. I will use the leadership position to develop and implement policies that will guide in the provision of quality antenatal, obstetric, postnatal, and newborn care. This will help to lower maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality deaths. I believe the program will equip me with knowledge on the formulation of policies that promote quality midwifery care.

Research Area of Interest

My research area of interest is on the prevention of common complications in pregnancy. In my nursing career, I have worked in the antenatal clinic, where I observed that many women, mainly from minority racial groups, developed pregnancy conditions that contributed to maternal and fetal mortality and obstetric complications. The most prevalent conditions are anemia in pregnancy, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and intrapartum hemorrhage (Rahmati et al., 2017). Despite these conditions being preventable, they have a high prevalence rate and are associated with high mortality rates (Petersen et al., 2019). I want to conduct a study that will provide recommendations on measures that can be taken to lower the prevalence of these life-threatening conditions. Furthermore, I want to research if the occurrence of these conditions increase the risk of a woman developing the condition in the post-pregnancy period. I want to study whether anemia in pregnancy, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes contribute to chronic cases of anemia, hypertension, and diabetes after pregnancy.
