AACN COMPETENCIES AND THE WALDEN MISSION, VISION, AND OUTCOMES NURS 8000
According to a Gallup poll completed in 2013, 82% of respondents indicated that they believe nurses have high to very high levels of honesty and ethical standards, and nursing has been rated as the most trusted profession for several years (Gallup, 2010). What other values and characteristics are associated with the nursing profession? Which ones are the most professionally, academically, and personally significant to you?
For this Discussion, you will consider the alignment of qualities outlined by the AACN with those promoted by Walden University.
You will examine the AACN document appropriate for your degree path and consider how you can incorporate either the Essentials or the Quality Indicators into your academic endeavors.
To prepare:
- Consider the competencies presented in The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (for DNP students)or The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence (for PhD students)in this week’s Learning Resources.
- Examine Walden University’s mission, vision, and university outcomes.
- Review the media presentation Introduction: The Doctor of Nursing Practice, which includes Dr. Joan Stanley’s comments about the AACN’s vision for the DNP degree.
- Identify commonalities among the concepts presented in each of these items.
- Think about your professional and academic goals. Consider how Walden’s standpoint and the AACN’s perspective fit with your objectives. Based on this information, what ideas do you have for incorporating a commitment to social change into your academic and professional plans?
By Day 5
Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:
- Describe one or more significant ways in which Walden’s standpoint (i.e., vision, mission, social change message, and outcomes) relates to the AACN competencies as well as to your professional and academic goals.

Hello All,
Describe one of more significant ways in which Walden’s standpoint (i.e., vision, mission, social change message and outcomes) related to the AACN competencies as well as to you professional and academic goals.
As this is my first year at Walden I was impressed when reading Walden’s student handbook how the visions, missions and goals mirror mine. Walden’s Universities guidelines maintains the same high set of standards and have expectations that a student learner would “demonstrate the ability to act as a role model and mentor to others who wish to pursue the profession (stewardship)”. (Walden University Student Handbook, 2010). Then I read the assigned reading from AACN Pathways to Excellence, and it recapitulated my belief that terminal degree students must be held to higher standard in their professional presentation. This higher academic degree encapsulated more than just the obtainment of the degree, but examples must be set for future generations of nurse, professional integrity and ethical standards must be maintained. (AACN, The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence, 2010). Both Walden and The AACN philosophies on the behaviors necessary to advance in the field will help guide me as I pursue my future goal of obtaining an Executive Leadership Position within my organization and finally having a seat at the table.
Articulate a plan for incorporating social change into two or more of your professional and/or academic goals.
I believe social change come from self-awareness, recognition that a change is needed and the power and desire to be that agent of change. There must be some cautiousness applied when one group exerts that power and makes change over another without input. As history has shown tragedy can occur when there is not equal representation from all parties involved. Social change must be inclusive and therefore finding ways to bring groups together that represent a diverse representation of backgrounds is a must for positive social change to occur. (Schyler et all). As I move further towards my goal and reach the pinnacle by obtaining a position in Executive Leadership, I will take this information learned and apply it to help obtain positive social change.

Tish,
To act as a change agent and a patient advocate is at the root of the nursing profession. A terminal degree will assist you in this, not only because of your advanced education, but also because people will respect what you say more and will turn to you for guidance and decision-making on important topics.
Reading through the mission and vision of Walden University, I strongly agree with their standpoint of “providing a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as a scholar- practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (School of Nursing Walden University, 2012). I appreciate and acknowledge that Walden takes into consideration the background and experience of everyone to improve the learning of every student. I have seen this first hand. I also agree with Walden’s statement as a social change agent by stating that “Walden support social change through the development of principle, knowledgeable and ethical scholar- practitioner, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of the society”(Walden University, 2012).
Have you ever read up on the roots of Walden? Ever read the story behind the founders and their forward, very insightful thinking? I would really encourage you all to do this and I think you will be surprised how the university started, and how its mission statement really drove its existence. Walden University mission are related to the AACN vision of having nurses that are ready to transform healthcare and improve health (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017). This can only be achieved through proper education and training as stated by Walden University.
Incorporating a social change in your profession by using the experiences that you have gained over the years and the knowledge gained in the academic community can transform evidence-based to practice, to give safe and quality care to patients. To be a role model and change agent to other nurses and the society at large is honorable and really effective in resulting in better patient outcomes.
