Patient safety and quality is a crucial concern that needs to be addressed in most health care environments.

Patient safety is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “do no harm to patients” and “the prevention of errors and adverse effects to patients associated with health care.” (Lawati et al., 2018). The most crucial first step is to evaluate the safety culture in primary care, which will give you a general idea of how healthcare professionals view safety. Gaining an awareness of the safety culture is essential to addressing problematic behaviors or attitudes that can contribute to a better primary care safety culture. These behaviors include adverse occurrences, misunderstanding, and a non-punitive response to errors. (Lawati et al., 2018). Proper communication is another intervention that helps ensure patient safety and a better health outcome. Education can be provided once there is awareness of disturbing practices.

The nursing profession continues to face shortages due to a lack of potential educators, high turnover, and inequitable workforce distribution, the causes related to the nursing shortage are numerous and issues of concern. (Haddad et al., 2023). Some potential reasons include the ageing population/work force, nurse burnout and growing population. The American Nurses Association (ANA) projects that until 2022, there will be more jobs available for registered nurses in the US than for any other profession. (Haddad et al., 2023).

Interventions that could help reduce nurse shortage are education on the use of technology and nurse empowerment. Some experienced nurses quit their jobs sooner because they can’t keep up with technology. To revitalize and maintain the nursing workforce, an atmosphere that fosters empowerment and motivation among nurses is essential. Less burnout and a strong desire to quit the workforce will result from empowerment and autonomy in staffing ratio decisions that take high volume and acuity levels into account. (Haddad et al., 2023). Listening to nurses’ concerns can also help reduce nursing shortage and burnout.

Vaccine and immunization legislation.

Nutritional assistance programs for school youths.

Diabetes education for elderly outpatients in a community health clinic.

Reducing the number of re-admits of patients who have had outpatient procedures.

Reducing the number of patient falls on a medical/surgical hospital floor.

These represent a few community and organizational needs, challenges, and issues that may require and merit the advocacy, skill set, and knowledge of the DNP-prepared nurse.
