According to Green (2018), living under conditions of poverty, poor-ventilated housing, poor sanitation, and contaminated water predisposes one to malnutrition, low immunity, and communicable diseases such as tuberculosis (tb). Green defined communicable diseases as diseases that can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person (tb) or indirectly through a vector (Malaria from mosquito\u2019s bite). He also described how the infectious disease chain can be used by health care professionals to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Health literacy among individuals of certain ethnic group greatly impacts their health and the way in which they access healthcare. When developing a teaching plan for certain groups of people to address any educational need of a community the public health nurse should consider health literacy of that group. Assess the group of what they know about the health issue and how they feel about it and their interest in solving the health issue. In the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, when vaccines became available to help slow the spread of the infection, we saw disparities in the number of people who where the first to receive the vaccines. One reason that was responsible for that was health literacy among the people of this nation. Most African Americans and many Whites as well did not believe in the vaccines due to the timeline in which the vaccines were produced. To save lives, when the vaccines were authorized to be used, many Whites were willing and ready to take the vaccines, whilst most African Americans and Hispanics were hesitant and refused to be vaccinated due to lack of knowledge.<\/p>\n

We also saw that the death toll from COVID-19 pandemic was higher in the Black and Hispanic community than the White because of health literacy. People could not take the necessary precautions to help control the spread especially in overcrowded communities. As cited by Callaghan et al., (2021), “according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black and Hispanic persons are 4.7 and 4.6 times more likely, respectively, to be hospitalized for COVID-19 compared to Whites”. But could we blame them? No, many died because of the circumstances they found themselves in and hence the social determinants of health played a great deal in fighting the pandemic. Another setback that led to minority groups reluctance and refusal to get vaccinated is the anti-vaccine advocacy group that targeted Blacks with anti-COVID-19 vaccine messaging suggesting that COVID-19 vaccine could fit in with historical lapses in public health ethics and tied COVID-19 vaccine with the medical abuses against Blacks in the past in the US (Callaghan et al., 2021).<\/p>\n
