Numerous quality measures or criteria govern the advanced practice nurse’s function. They include developing a culture of trust and secrecy with patients and coworkers through professional accountability and judgment. The other quality indicator is respect for patient dignity, which is demonstrated by leadership in the drive to improve patient safety and by honoring patients’ autonomy and right to self-determination. The other criteria is shown quality of practice through autonomous nursing practice founded on competence, compassion, and kindness. The other metric is to ensure multidisciplinary teamwork in order to achieve favorable patient outcomes. In essence, health informatics may be utilized to bolster these criteria in order to promote high-quality care. The effective application of informatics would result in an increase in the coordination of health care delivery. Today’s health care system is complex, and many patients receive care from multiple specialists within the same facility. As a result, a large number of specialists demand additional cooperation. Health informatics is primarily responsible for this coordination. For example, a single patient can have multiple interactions with a team of physicians about his or her care using electronic health records. Informatics also facilitates information sharing among caregivers by allowing them to learn from one another and hone their skills. It is feasible to disseminate knowledge regarding patients, medical interventions, diseases, and therapies via informatics. Because knowledge sharing between professionals and patients is facilitated, patient outcomes generally increase.
Notably, numerous nursing organizations, such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), provide knowledge, tools, and resources to advance practice nurses in order to enhance information practice and quality health care service (AHIMA, 2019). Additionally, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is principally focused with nursing informatics scholarship and the development and maintenance of the certification exam. McCormick, Gugerty, and Sensmeier (2017) assert that informatics competencies are critical tools for advanced practice nurses in providing high-quality, safe patient care. On the other hand, certification demonstrates that the nurse has met the appropriate professional standards.

The use of electronic health record (EHR) is increasingly gaining momentum in many countries because it is a promising tool in improving the cost and quality of health care. However, the technologies involved in EHR are prone to many risks, thus, posing challenges in the safety of the information in the EHRs system (Ozair, Jamshed, Sharma & Aggarwal, 2015). Intrinsically, the use of

EHRs is associated with many ethical and legal challenges. One of the ethical challenges includes instances where a patient may lack of confidence in the safety of his or her health data. The utilization of EHRs has encountered security breaches that cause threats to patient privacy especially when the confidential patient information is leaked to others without patient’s permission. Consequently, fear of such breaches may prompt the patients to keep sensitive information from the physician. As a result, their treatment outcomes may be negatively impacted (Ozair, Jamshed, Sharma & Aggarwal, 2015). On the other hand, the legal challenge in using the EHRs is the risk for malpractice claims. Health care providers using EHRs are at risk of making medical malpractices especially when the system is still implemented or adopted. When such malpractices occur, the aggrieved party may seek legal redress for the damages caused by medical malpractice. The consequences of compromising data include an array of costs related to data breach including compensating the affected patients and sourcing right protection systems to ensure the safety of information. Besides, the health care organization may face liability for breaches such as paying fines and damages. Other than the cost implications, the organization may also suffer reputational damage which results in loss of confidence by the patients. Consequently, Ozair et al., (2015) suggest different measures to protect patient privacy and confidentiality including installing security measures such as antivirus software, firewalls, and software that detect intrusion to enhance the integrity of the data. Besides, the organization should ensure policies and procedures that enhance patient privacy and confidentiality. Finally, there is need for routine performance of accidental audits to ensure that the organization is sticking to the policy.
