What is \"disruptive change,\" and how is this different from \"incremental change?\"

Disruptive change refers to the innovations that cause fundamental change in the organizations. These fundamental changes completely interrupt how the organization conducts business. Disruptive changes have the potential to overturn the typical way of operations in the organization to point that they have disruptive effect on the entire industry (Bövers & Hoon, 2021). In health care industry, the disruptive change could be centered on technology, third party advancements, and customer-centric care. In the current case, disruptive change can occur when the models of business are deeply challenged.

On the other hand, incremental change connotes sustainability and efficiency enhancement in an organization’s supply chains, processes, and operations, all within the available business model (Liebler & McConnell, 2020). Therefore, the difference between incremental and disruptive changes is that incremental change happens in smaller phases that cannot significantly affect the extended organizational culture or environment. However, disruptive change can unexpectedly turn over the traditional organizational system. Moreover, disruptive change may need an organization to initiate fundamental structural disruption or even lead to risk of failure. Contrarily, incremental change can require continuous amendments by the organization to respond to its development or remain competitive.

Disruptive changes can affect an organization by overturning the typical way of operations in the organization to point that they have disruptive effect on the entire industry. In an organization, disruptive changes can occur when a completely new technology is invented and gain popularity. For instance, the introduction of smart phones gained popularity over slightly faster laptops, desktops, or servers, which had existed for sometime due to their fastest nature in relaying information and convenience in use. In turn, organizations were forced to radically adjust their policies and business or risk fail to compete with more mobile rivals. In this example, faster computers increase performance increment, while Smart phones disrupt the established market.
