1. What are the statistical facts related to the issue?

2. What happens at the cellular or genetic level?

Around one in seven women develop or can develop postpartum depression; sadly, it’s believed that postpartum depression is much more common than the data reveals. It is estimated that a health professional does not diagnose nearly 50% of mothers with postpartum depression. While women who experience baby blues tend to recover quickly, postpartum tends to last longer and severely affects women’s ability to return to normal function. Postpartum depression affects the mother and her relationship with the infant. Maternal brain response and behavior are compromised in postpartum depression. According to beck in 2006, as many as half of the women suffering from postpartum depression in new mothers go undiagnosed because of conflict in privacy and not wanting to disclose to close family members. Again, there are stigmas around new mothers in that disclosure may lead to abandonment and fear of lack of support.

Depression (also known as major depression or major depressive disorder) is a psychiatric disorder that affects mood, behavior, and overall health. It causes prolonged sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed. People with depression may also have changes in appetite leading to overeating or not eating enough), changes in sleeping patterns that are sleeping too much or not being able to sleep, loss of energy, and difficulty concentrating. Although depression is primarily considered a mental health disorder, it can also have physical features, including headaches, other unexplained aches and pains, unusually slow or fast movements, and digestive problems. To be diagnosed with depression, an individual must have signs and symptoms nearly every day for at least two weeks. However, the features of this condition vary widely. Affected individuals may have difficulty functioning daily, including at school or work. People with depression have a higher risk of substance abuse problems and dying by suicide than the general population.

I want my peers to respond to some of my inquiries, such as what can be done to help a mother experiencing postpartum depression, how you support a mother during those times, the resources available, and how to access those resources without being judged by others

Level 1: Which parts of the body are affected by caffeine consumption?

Level 2: How are statistical facts associated with the issue of caffeine overconsumption?

Caffeine is the most ingested psychoactive substance and is consumed by the majority of the U.S population. It is a central nervous system stimulant which can aid in alertness as well as reduce sleepiness. Caffeine affects a number of body systems including the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and the central nervous system. What caffeine does in the brain is it blocks adenosine by binding to its receptors, and adenosine plays a role in sleep regulation, memory, and cognition. Not only does caffeine affect the brain but it also affects the heart. Caffeine causes rapid heart rate and sometimes also atrial fibrillation, irregular heart rhythm. It also promotes the release of norepinephrine which increases heart rate and blood pressure.

The average person living in America drinks 3.1 cups of coffee per day. This is close to the maximum amount of milligrams of caffeine that the FDA recommends for safety. Over consumption of caffeine may result in chronic insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Around 85% of Americans consume caffeine daily. This not only builds the tolerance for caffeine but it also makes it harder to stop or decrease the consumption of caffeine. People who try to stop drinking coffee, for instance, may experience withdrawals such as headaches, tiredness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

I would like to ask my peers for feedback on how I can further incorporate the economic issues on the overconsumption of caffeine.
