In this assignment, you will complete the following Virtual Patient: Care of an Older Adult with Asthma During the COVID-19 Pandemic CME. Upon completion of the CME on AAAAI this week, you are to provide a copy of your CEU certificate by uploading it to this assignment by Day 7.

In this patient simulation, you will evaluate and treat an older adult patient with asthma in the current setting of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic continues to evolve, you will make the best possible choices for therapy and continuation of therapy, including biologic therapies, given the potential logistical issues and limited resources available. You will become more adept at distinguishing between symptoms and signs of asthma compared with COVID-19, given the current information available. In addition, you will recommend and advise the patient on strategies to reduce exposure to COVID-19, including at home and workplace. This resource is available free of charge.

Once you have participated in the activity, submit CNE certificate with a 150–300-word written reflection. Discuss how this will change your practice and what you have learned from this experience. Use a minimum of two scholarly resources.

Thank you for your post. The patient’s responses are below.

1. I would like to remind you that all the information discussed here today is confidential. I am here to listen and help you in every way I can. Do you need an interpreter for today’s visit? Yes, please.
2. When did you started having fevers, chills, sore throat, and nonproductive cough? I started having my symptoms three or four days ago.
3. How high are your fevers? My fevers have been from 99 to 102.
4. How often are the fevers coming? They come and go, with medication.
5. Are you taking any over-the-counter medications to help manage the fevers? If yes, when was the last time you took it? I took Tylenol 5 hours ago
6. Are you having any headaches or any other pain? If yes, where are you having pain and how would you describe it? Yes, my head has been hurting and I don’t know how to describe it but my body has felt very achy.
7. Have you had recent contact with anyone who is sick? Yes, a few members of my family are sick.
8. Is there anything you do that makes your symptoms better or worse? Hot tea with a little lemon and honey make my throat feel better.
9. Are you taking any medications to make you feel better? Yes Tylenol.
10. How has your appetite been? It has decreased and I am having mostly chicken and vegetable soup.
11. Have you had any changes to your taste or smell? (Dolin et al., 2022) No.
12. Are you having difficulty swallowing? No. My throat is just sore.
13. Have you experienced any recent malaise, weakness, confusion, or dizziness? (Dolin et al., 2022) No, but I have body aches in my whole body.
14. How would you describe your sleeping pattern? Have you had any changes since you became ill? I am sleeping more.
15. What are the medications you use to control your asthma? (Fanta et al., 2022) I am using Albuterol and Singular.
16. Since you moved to the United States, have you established a report with a provider to help with managing you hypertension and asthma? No.
17. Have you received the COVID-19 vaccines and influenza vaccine? (Fanta et al., 2022) No
18. How is everything at home? Everything is good.
19. Do you feel safe at home? (Halphen et al., 2021). Yes.
20. Have you been denied basic needs such as food, clothing, or medical care? (Halphen et al., 2021) No, because I am with my family and we take care of each other.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. Participation –replies to your classmates or instructor

  • A minimum of 6 responses per week, on at least 3 days of the week.
  • Each response needs at least ONE reference with citations—best if it is a peer reviewed journal article
  • Each response needs to be at least 75 words in length (does not include your list of references)
  • Responses need to be substantive by bringing information to the discussion or further enhance the discussion. Responses of “I agree” or “great post” does not count for the word count.
