There are many strategies for incorporating academic activity and accomplishments into my professional development goals. First, it is essential to adopt a goal evolution mindset. As we grow and learn, our goals will evolve. Academic activities and accomplishments should constantly contribute to professional development goals. It is essential to determine what steps must be taken to achieve professional development goals (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Modern-day advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) must develop a portfolio of evidence of professional development activities and achievements and how they contribute to professional practice as a visual representation of their experience, strengths, abilities, and skills (Casey & Egan, 2013). The benefits of portfolios include skill development, promoting active learning, improved clinical competency, and improved academic assessment and achievement (Dehkordi & Ghiasvandian, 2019). The portfolio will represent who I am, what I am passionate about, and the strengths I have obtained during my education at Walden University.

A strategy I could use to include academic activities and accomplishments in my professional development is to join professional nursing organizations. It is crucial to serve the community and profession (Walden University, LLC, 2018). I could connect with various professional organizations to participate in activities aligned with my career goals (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). Professional organization bring nurses together and empowers nurses to have a voice (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Nurses can also become certified in areas that may contribute to their professional development goals. The American Nurses Credentialing Center outlines steps for APRNs to expand their focus to meet expanded practice roles (Melander et al., 2020).

Another strategy is to record specific moments where I used my education and research to change a patient’s life. Casey and Egan (2013) suggested regularly accounting for incidents that have occurred in practice and using these instances in a portfolio, showcasing the application of knowledge learned. Collecting patient accounts evidencing competence in advanced practice will highlight academic activities contributing to professional development goals. Portions of my portfolio will highlight educational activities and accomplishments contributing to my professional development goals (Casey & Egan, 2013). I could specifically select evidence highlighting a skill I have obtained throughout my education. Nurses can also attend seminars and apply the knowledge learned in practice (Casey & Egan, 2013). I will attend conferences specific to my areas of interest, including aesthetic nursing, healthcare access in underprivileged communities, and healthcare policy. the development of an eportforlio is essential to an advanced providers career developed.  Hannans and Olivo (2017) discuss that traditional resumes may become a thing of the past and they predict eportfolios as being a requirement for job candidates in the future.   Hannans and Olivo (2017) also discuss that prospective employers may attempt to research a canidate online before hire and it could look ill part on the candidate to not have an online portfolio established on some time of social media platform.  I never thought of this myself until reading that article.

I too think that it is really important for future and current advanced practitioners to become a member of an organization related to their field/speciality.  My background as a nurse is Emergency room and I myself have been a member of the ENA for several years.  I enjoy being a member because they send routine emails about conference, training, and continuing education oppurtunies in my speciality.  This will be extremely important for us as advanced practice nurses in order to stay up to date with current research and data.  According to Crumley (2020) “Professional nursing organizations (PNOs) play a critical role in maximizing the influence of our nursing profession on health systems and policy, through support of patient safety, the socioeconomic welfare of nurses, and professional practice” (p.1).

Like the ENA, the AACN provides numerous opportunities for continuing education and professional development/advancement. In 2017, the Health Education England department identified four pillars of advanced practice nursing (Reynolds & Mortimore (2021):

  • Clinical practice
  • Leadership and management
  • Education
  • Research

These are four great components to model a professional portfolio on. Memberships in organizations such as the ENA and AACN support each one of these pillars, as well. The AACN website even provides the option to print your transcripts for each continuing education course or webinar, adding more material to a professional portfolio (AACN, n.d.).

Professional portfolios are becoming a very popular way for employers to evaluate a nurse is experience and progress. They are considered structured evidence that demonstrate an individual is ability to meet their profession’s standards for practice, including an indication of the professional’s vision of future growth and capacity building (Walden University, 2018)). Because of its growing importance, nurses should ensure that they keep their portfolio current and up to date. Every nursing scholar must first create a professional portfolio before moving from student to professional graduate roles. For the purpose of showcasing their accomplishments and scholarly pursuits, students must have an academic portfolio.

One of the strategic I intent to use in enhancing my portfolio is to show materials that highlight my academic achievements. Nursing scholars must incorporate their existing skills and knowledge into the development of their professional portfolios (Henderson, Davis, & Day, 2018, p.353). As a Walden master’s degree student, I would love to showcase the projects and assignments that would help show my academic activities and accomplishments that I completed so far in the program of study. The plans and tasks that would be shown would be divided into sections of individual assignments, professional development (which includes development projects and specialized research), classroom involvement, and research. It is essential that, as a scholar, I do research and understand the professional practitioner market to build a portfolio that reflects any changes in the market (Jung & Kim, 2017, p.765).

Another strategy I will employ for my professional portfolio is to keep track of all my academic achievements and activities online. According to research, using an online or electronic portfolio can help students achieve more in the classroom (Ahmed & Ward, 2019). To achieve this, I will put everything for my portfolio together in a Google Doc. With Google Doc, I can use a computer to review various parts of my documents whenever and wherever I want. Google Doc regularly saves work, so I don’t have to worry if my computer’s battery runs out of power or if my internet connection is interrupted. In all, using the strategies mentioned above will be helpful because it will show what I have accomplished and what I can contribute in any given professional situation.

For the past five years, I have been focusing on achieving my professional development goals. For nearly 10 years, I worked as an LPN. I received my ADN in 2016, BSN early this year and currently pursuing my PMHNP. I chose to pursue my PMHNP after accepting a position to work with behavioral health patients. I chose to go back to school because I wanted to get my master’s in education. I thought I would have more options if I got my NP rather than a master’s in education, however; after speaking with a few seasoned APNs with master’s degrees, I may practice and teach with my NP. I’ll be including teaching in my professional development.

There are two types of portfolios, according to the article Creating a Nursing Portfolio. Growth and development come first, followed by the best work portfolio. My techniques include working on the psych unit and teaching to expand my experience and knowledge base. In order to become more familiar with the NP job, I network with other APNs. I don’t know many PMHNPs, but I do network with two employees, one of which is a newly licensed PMHNP and the other is a DNP but recently got his certification in PMHNP. I try to speak with my NP primary care provider as often as I can. Setting professional development objectives can help you accomplish more, broaden your skill set, and enjoy your work more (Indeed). Career advancement is more attainable and can advance your professional trajectory if you know how to set and fulfill your goals (Indeed). My ultimate goal is to become a PMHNP. One by one, I’ve accomplished my objectives. I claim to be finishing school in stages. I finished my ADN, took a few years off, and then I began my BSN. I took six months off after earning my BSN before going back to college.

The goal of Walden University’s social change initiative is to serve as a connecting hub that encourages, supports, and fosters cooperative partnerships, action research, and initiatives that result in deliberate action for long-lasting, beneficial social change (Walden). Given that I collaborate with the psych unit and the institution where I plan on teaching, I think my objectives are in line with Walden’s mission. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner. This is a deliberate action that will produce long-lasting social change for the better. According to Regis College, NPs may significantly improve communities by advocating for patients and providing top-notch care. As a professional and student in a graduate nursing program, it is important to develop professional development goals. One of the best ways to organize professional development goals is by creating a professional portfolio. Generating a professional portfolio is a great way to present the skills, achievements, and professional experience as a nurse (Burns, 2018). Three main reasons that creating a professional portfolio is necessary is because it provides self-promotion, an evidence of outcome, and structure and direction (Burns, 2018). The purpose of this discussion is to explain two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals.  

The first strategy to incorporate into my professional development goals is the inclusion of my resume. A resume describes your qualifications and what makes you unique. In order to stand out among other applicants, you need a resume that markets your strength and match for the job (U.S. Department of Labor, 2021). A good resume should grab the attention of employers and sell your strongest accomplishments. By including a resume, you can build a powerful document, which aids in career advancement and competency improvement (Burns, 2018).  

The second strategy I would include would be evaluations from managers. Including evaluations and feedback from managers and peers provides information involving work ethic, education, goals, and abilities. According to Mokhtari-Nouri et. al. (2018), appropriate feedback received from nursing colleagues, faculty members, and supervisors increases their sense of empowerment. The nursing portfolio is more than a collection of documents. “It allows nurses to stretch and reach beyond their day-to-day expectations and explore ways to advance both themselves and the profession” (Burns, 2018 p. 17).  

Walden University defines positive social change as “a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies” (Walden University, n.d.). Creating a professional portfolio including a resume and manager evaluations presents my educational experience, my accomplishments, my strengths, and my skills. It will show my development of time and the steps I have taken to be where I am. It will show my actions that I have taken to promote my individual worth and development.
