My PICOT question seeks to establish whether early screening of mental health disorders among young people from 15-25 years leads to self-reported improvement of symptoms. Lustig et al. (2022) examined the relationship between the intervention “Screening by Professionals” (ProfScreen) and the utilization of mental health services and at-risk state at 12-month follow-up compared to a control group. School students aged 15 ± 0.9 years from 11 European countries who were part of the “Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe” (SEYLE) study completed a self-report questionnaire on mental health problems and risk behaviors.

Participants randomized to either the ProfScreen intervention or the control group were included in this study to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of this two-staged intervention. The intervention was designed to facilitate referral to appropriate professional mental healthcare (Lustig et al., 2022). The inclusion criteria for this study were: Participants randomized to either ProfScreen or a control group; Persons who screened positive for mental health problems and risky behavior at baseline (labeled as ‘at-risk’).

The participants completed a 60–90 min self-report questionnaire on mental health problems, risk behaviors, and socio-demographics in a school-based setting. The same questionnaire assessed mental health problems and risk behaviors at a 12-month follow-up. The study found that the participants who underwent the ProfScreen intervention were more likely to engage in services with a health professional than those from the control group (Lustig et al., 2022). Nevertheless, service use rates for professional mental health services remained low, even among ProfScreen participants, with only 5.4% seeking professional treatment.

The study’s strength is that it used participants from 11 European countries. Thus, the study findings can be applied to a wide range of European and high-income countries with similar cultural backgrounds. However, this is also a limitation since different countries may have dissimilar cultures, health systems, and barriers to care. This may have led to differences in the interview setting and the follow-up process, even with the standardization processes (Lustig et al., 2022). Screening of adolescents by professionals was linked with increased utilization of professional care. The article recommends the elimination of barriers to mental health use for youths to improve the utilization of mental health services and reduce youths’ psychological stress and risk behavior.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
