Part 2: Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Over the next ten weeks, I plan to conduct clinical assessments on at least three individuals who have comorbid mental disorders, following the diagnostic criteria provided in the DSM-V.

Planned Activities: To minimize preventable interruptions in medication distribution, I will conduct a thorough evaluation of every patient’s health records during my regular hourly inspections (Delaney, 2019).

Mode of Assessment: To successfully accomplish my goals, I must do at least ten diagnostic evaluations every week.

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed:

  • Consider one’s present and future potential as a highly-skilled psychiatric-mental health nurse.
  • Enhance the diagnosis procedure for individuals receiving mental health care in a hospital or other comparable facility, regardless of age.
  • Apply contemporary nursing skills to evaluate, identify, and manage patients with mental health issues.

Objective 2: Upon completing my 11-week practicum, I will have acquired the knowledge to determine the most effective screening instrument and its optimal utilization for diagnosing a minimum of five patients per day with co-occurring mental health issues.

Planned Activities: Multiple methods for diagnosing mental diseases will be studied. Subsequently, I will use the most effective diagnostic techniques tailored to each patient, taking into account subjective and objective data (Wesemann et al., 2022).

Mode of Assessment: The DSM-V diagnostic criteria will be used to assess the consistency between the gathered material and the results produced by the diagnostic tool (Wesemann & Handrup, 2021).

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed:

  • Apply the acquired expertise in advanced nursing practice to assess patients, formulate diagnoses, and provide therapy in mental healthcare environments.
  • Consider many instances of pioneering therapies for mental disorders that have been provided to patients across various age groups.
  • Recognize the need for differential diagnosis in delivering mental health assistance to persons of all age groups.

Objective 3: During the following eleven weeks, I will guide at least five patients on how to use psychotropic medicines best, participate in group counseling, and engage in family therapy to improve their treatment results.

Planned Activities: My everyday purpose will be to aid sufferers in comprehending their mental health difficulties, including the fundamental reasons and treatment alternatives such as psychotherapy (Williams et al., 2022).

Mode of Assessment: I will assess patient satisfaction by actively soliciting feedback and addressing any inquiries they may have regarding the information I have provided (Fraino & Selix, 2021).

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed:

  • Consider the development of novel therapies for mental disorders that impact individuals across all age groups.
  • Formulate efficacious treatment regimens integrating drugs and counseling in the therapeutic procedure.
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to improve therapy procedures in mental health institutions.

Part 3: Projected Timeline/Schedule

I intend to complete the 144 or 160 Practicum hours (as applicable) according to the following timeline/schedule. I also understand that I must see at least 80 patients during my practicum experience. I understand I may not complete my practicum hours sooner than eight weeks. I understand I may not be in the practicum setting longer than 8 hours per day unless pre-approved by my faculty.

PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE PLAN (PEP) PRAC 6645

As you establish your goals and objectives for this course, you are committing to an organized plan that will frame your practicum experience in a clinical setting, including planned activities, assessment, and achievement of defined outcomes. In particular, they must address the categories of clinical reasoning, quality in your clinical specialty, and interpersonal collaborative practice.

For this Assignment, you will consider the areas you aim to focus on to gain practical experience as an advanced practice nurse. Then, you will develop a Practicum Experience Plan (PEP) containing the objectives you will fulfill in order to achieve your aims. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep psychotherapy approaches and techniques in mind.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

TO PREPARE

  • Review your Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form you submitted last week and think about areas for which you would like to gain application-level experience and/or continued growth as an advanced practice nurse. How can your experiences in the practicum help you achieve these aims?
  • Review the information related to developing objectives provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Your practicum learning objectives that you want to achieve during your practicum experience must be:
    • Specific
    • Measurable
    • Attainable
    • Results-focused
    • Time-bound
    • Reflective of the higher-order domains of Bloom’s taxonomy (i.e., application level and above)

Note: Please make sure your objectives are individualized and outlined in your Practicum Experience Plan (PEP). While you may add previous objectives to continue to work toward. You must have 3 new objectives for each class, each quarter.

  • Discuss your professional aims and your proposed practicum objectives with your Preceptor to ascertain if the necessary resources are available at your practicum site.
  • Select one nursing theory and one counseling/psychotherapy theory to best guide your clinical practice. Explain why you selected these theories. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.
  • Create a timeline of practicum activities that demonstrates how you plan to meet these goals and objectives based on your practicum requirements.

ASSIGNMENT

Record the required information in each area of the Practicum Experience Plan template, including 3–4 measurable practicum learning objectives you will use to facilitate your learning during the practicum experience.
