Nurse Informatics Nurse Educators Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Ethics Nurses who specialize in informatics have to behave in accordance with ethics guiding their practice. This includes ensuring the safety, privacy, and confidentiality of the data of their clients. These nurses also have the ethical responsibility of ensuring that the electronic data of their clients are used in a meaningful way. This includes the use of such data for the purposes of improving the health and wellbeing of their clients. They also have to ensure that the clients trust their organizations with their private data (Harman & Cornelius, 2015). They do this by ensuring that up to date methods of data storage and retrieval are used.

Nurse educators have to ensure that they demonstrate ethics in their practice. They also have to instill the desired ethical practices to their students. They have to uphold ethics that include professionalism, equality, honesty, and justice in their settings. They should instill the right professional behaviors to their students. They should also use teaching methods that promote equality. Nurse educators should also promote fairness in delivery of the instructions (Grace, 2017). Further, nurse educators should also be honest in delivering feedback to their learners. Both nurse informaticists and nurse educators’ practices are guided by ethics. However, nurse informaticists are focused more on data ethics while nurse educators focus on ethics in curriculum delivery to nursing students and other nurses.
Education One becomes a nurse in informatics after specializing at masters or doctoral level in information technology. One must also have a bachelor’s degree in nursing science. Further, a nurse informaticist must be registered by the state where they provide their services.

Nurse educators must have a masters or doctorate degree in nursing education. One must also have a bachelor’s degree in nursing. There is also the requirement for being registered in a state where one practices. Both specialties require specialization at masters or doctoral level. Similarities also exist in the minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree and state licensure.
Leadership Leadership is an important skill for nurses who specialize in informatics. They need to demonstrate leadership in the introduction and use of new technologies in healthcare. They also need to demonstrate effective leadership that transforms the use and protection of the private data of their clients. Nurses in this specialty are also expected to demonstrate effective leadership skills in the analysis of complex data to assist their clients in making decisions focused on improving efficiency and performance (Harman & Cornelius, 2015).

Leadership is equally important for nurse educators. Nurse educators should demonstrate leadership competencies in developing and promoting vision for nursing education. They should be able to promote the development of professional relationships between the students and other stakeholders in healthcare. Further, nurse educators ought to demonstrate their leadership in the assessment, development, and implementation of curriculums used in nursing education (Grace, 2017). Leadership is an important skill for both specialties. However, leadership in nursing informatics focuses mainly on developing competencies in the effective and efficient use of information technology. Leadership in nursing education, on the other hand, focuses on instilling the right values to students and other nurses and transforming nursing institutions to promote excellence in nursing education.
Public Health Nurse informaticists focus on the promotion of public health. This is achieved through the protection of the private data of individuals in the society. It is also achieved through the meaningful use of health data to promote the health of the public. An example entails the use of health information technologies in promoting adherence to medications among the sick. Nurse informaticists also promote public health by ensuring that the public is informed about the various health issues affecting them through the use of technologies such as mHealth (Frith & Hoy, 2017). Therefore, public health is promoted using information technology.

Nurse educators also focus on promoting public health. They achieve this by ensuring that nursing curriculum focuses on addressing health issues that face individuals, families, and communities. They also focus on imparting nursing students with knowledge and

skills that would address different issues affecting the public (Grace, 2017). Therefore, public health is promoted through education. The two specialties focus on promoting public health. However, nurse informaticists optimize on the use of health information technologies to promote public health. They also protect the health of the public by ensuring that health data is protected from unsafe use. Nurse educators on the other hand promote public health by empowering those they train such as nursing students with the right knowledge and skills to address health issues affecting the public.
Health Care Administration Nurses informaticists have a critical role in healthcare administration. They can lead institutions of healthcare in achieving their vision and mission. They can use their knowledge in informatics to ensure that right technologies are used to promote excellence. They can also use it to promote efficiency in the delivery of healthcare (Black, 2016). Therefore, their specialization does not limit them from holding administrative roles in healthcare organizations.

Nurse educators can also act as healthcare administrators. Their experience in nursing education provides them with the opportunities to manage resources, which can be applied in healthcare administration. Nurse educators also have extensive experience in handling organizational processes such as conflict resolution and performance management in their practice (Grace, 2017). Therefore, they can transfer such knowledge into management of healthcare organizations. The two professionals can act as administrators of health organizations. However, nurse educators seem best fit for the role than those specialized in nursing informatics due to their experience with human processes such as conflict management and performance management in institutions offering nursing education.
Informatics Knowledge on informatics is essential for the practice of nurse informaticists. They utilize the knowledge to analyze complex data and present them to their clients for informed decision-making. They must also demonstrate proficiency in determining the most effective information technologies to improve organizational performance.

Knowledge of nursing informatics is important for nurse educators. They use it to determine the most effective technologies that can be used in nursing education to enhance the realization of the missions of their institutions. They also use it to determine technologies that can be used to impart the desired knowledge and skills to their nursing students (Scott, 2017). They also need it to guide the students in using information technology in the provision of care to the patients. Both specializations require knowledge on nursing informatics. However, the use of this knowledge is more prominent in nursing informatics than in nursing education. This is attributed to the focus of the nurses specialized in informatics on the use of information technology in healthcare.
Business/Finance Nurses informaticists require knowledge in business and finance. This knowledge is important for them to determine the cost-effectiveness of the available health information technologies. They also use the knowledge to allocate financial resources to the most prioritized issues related to health information technology (Black, 2016). Further, they also utilize it in formulating financial projections associated with the adopted information technologies in healthcare.

Nurse educators need knowledge in business and finance. They utilize it in determining the cost-effectiveness of the varied methods of instruction and curriculum used in nursing education (Ellis, 2017). They also need it in influencing policies that should be adopted in nursing education. The knowledge in business or finance is important in both specializations. However, it is not largely used since their services do not rely mainly on the determination of the financial impacts of the adopted interventions.
Specialty (e.g., Family, Acute Care) Nurses specialized in nursing informatics can teach other nurses advancing their knowledge in nursing informatics. As a specialty, nurse informaticists may be designated as nursing informatics specialist, clinical nurse specialist, and nurse informatics clinician among others.

Nurse educators teach students in their specialties such as acute care, family nursing, and critical care nursing. Such an undertaking is predicated upon requirements established by various state boards. The role of nurse educators in relation to specialty is extensive. This is not the case with nursing informatics where individuals can only teach those specializing in nursing informatics.
Regulatory Bodies or Certification Agencies That Provide Guidance or Parameters on How These Roles Incorporate Concepts Into Practice Nurses specialized in nursing informatics are certified by ANCC. They are then licensed at the states where they practice.

Nurse educators should be certified by AACN. The board of directors from each state oversees their licensing. The two specialties share the fact that professionals are licensed in the states they practice. However, their certification bodies differ.

Advanced registered nurses work in highly collaborative environments and must collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in order to provide excellent patient care. Besides knowing the role and scope of one\’s own practice, it is essential to understand the role and scope of other nurse specialties to ensure effective collaboration among nurses, the organization, and other professionals with whom advanced registered nurses regularly interact.

Use the \”Nursing Roles Graphic Organizer Template\” to differentiate how advanced registered nurse roles relate to and collaborate with different areas of nursing practice. Compare your future role with one of the following: nurse educator; nurse leader; family nurse practitioner; acute care nurse practitioner; graduate nurse with an emphasis/specialty in public health, health care administration, business, or informatics; clinical nurse specialist; doctor of nursing practice. Indicate in the appropriate columns on the template which roles you are comparing.

Make sure to compare the following areas of practice in your graphic organizer:

Ethics

Each state has an agency that is responsible for the nurses in their state and how they practice, these are called nursing regulatory bodies. The point of these nursing regulatory bodies Is to protect the public’s health by practicing safe nursing (National Council of State Boards of Nursing [NCSBN], 2022a). Each state has its own Nurse Practice Act that is enforced (NCSBN,2022a). Each states act has rules and regulations such as qualifications for licensure and scope of practice. Two nursing regulatory bodies are the Arizona State Board of Nursing and the American Nurses Association. Within the Arizona State Board of Nursing is the Advanced Practice Advisory Committee who provides recommendations to the Board on issues involving advanced practice (Arizona State Board of Nursing, 2018).

The Arizona State Board of Nursing has a plethora of information as they regulate licensure requirements, specify certification, and scope of practice for your specialty. Within the Arizona State Board of Nursing is the Advanced Practice Advisory Committee who provides recommendations to the Board on issues involving advanced practice (Arizona State Board of Nursing, 2018). Some of the goals of this committee are to clarify regulatory sufficiency of the four Advanced Practice roles and develop recommendations for change related to Advanced Practice (Arizona State Board of Nursing, 2018). For example, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in Arizona have their scope of practice laid out on Arizona State Board of Nursing and the Arizona State Legislature. CRNA’s in Arizona are able to administer anesthetics under the direction of a physician or surgeon before, during, or after a surgery/procedure in certain settings that are clearly listed (Arizona State Board of Nursing, 2018).

I actually really enjoyed reading through the APRN Conesus Model as it gave really good insight into the roles, licensure, accreditation, certification and education. As we discussed last week in this course the number of APRN’s are growing exponentially to try and keep up with forever changing healthcare needs in our growing country. The consensus discusses that as nursing practice evolves and health care needs of the population change, new APRN roles or population focus may change over time (NCBSN, 2022b).  Every APRN role uses a significantly differentiated set of competencies and there is a plan in place to help the role evolve.
