Major Assignment Membership in Professional Organizations

Nurses, like other professionals, need professional growth and excellence, therefore a need to look at possible avenues for fostering such growth and development. Professional growth ensures that Ph.D. or a DNP prepared nurse can appropriately identify a clinical problem and trigger a research effort as a way of solving such a problem. This week’s discussion focuses on the identification of a clinical problem worth attention. Besides, the discussion outlines the plans in place to join a professional nursing organization.

Problem Suitable For Research

The clinical practice environment entails taking care of many patients with various clinical conditions; therefore, various issues or problems usually arise that need improvement or a complete change. Some of these problems can better be handled through research efforts by DNP and PhD-prepared nurses. One of the problems occurring in a clinical environment and is suitable for research is catheter-associated urinary tract infections. These are infections that come as a result of the insertion, maintenance, and or care of urinary catheters (Tenke et al., 2017).  Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are very common in clinical settings due to the fact that the rate of use of indwelling urinary catheters is high. For instance, a recent study showed that 24% of patients in US hospitals use indwelling urinary catheters. Besides, the figures elsewhere are not any better since patients 26% and 18% of patients in Australia and the UK hospitals use the indwelling catheters.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections warrant attention due to the negative effects or impact it has on patients, health care facilities and the healthcare system. One of the effects is that the condition causes longer hospital stays for the admitted patients, a situation which can expose the patients to other hospital-acquired infections (Cao et al., 2018). Besides, the treatment becomes more difficult due to enhanced antimicrobial resistance. The other reason why the condition deserves attention from the nursing perspective is that it can be reduced through appropriate nursing interventions. While there are various innovative interventions such as cleaning of the meatal region before inserting the catheters using appropriate agents such as saline or Chlorhexidine (Fasugba et al., 2019), ensuring that the indwelling catheters are promptly removed from the patient when not needed, among other things, the condition still persists and common in healthcare settings (Mota & Oliveira, 2019).

Outline

Nursing professional bodies are vital for the growth of a nurse as a scholar-practitioner. With membership in such professional organizations, a nurse gets access to many benefits such as current updates regarding the condition, advocacy opportunities, educational endeavours, and scholarships, among others (Bindon, 2017). I am therefore planning to join a nursing professional organization. Having been a member of the National Student Nurse Association, which is meant for nursing students, I plan to join a professional nursing body once done with my program. One of the professional nursing organizations I intend to join is the National League for Nursing. This organization has the potential of supporting the development of my scholarly project as well as my education.

One way this organization will support my future projects is through nursing research grants. Nursing research can be expensive; however, the opportunity of getting nursing research grants offered by the National League for nursing can make an individual achieve dreams of being an accomplished researcher. Among my major aims as a nurse is to be an accomplished nurse professional, a feat that is not possible without professional development support. The National League for Nursing offers professional development to its members; therefore, I believe that by joining this organization, I will be able to accomplish my nursing professional goals.

Conclusion

This week’s discussion has focused on a clinical problem that is worth the attention of researchers. The problem has been identified as catheter-associated urinary tract infections, researchable since it can be controlled through nursing interventions. Joining a nursing professional organization is a step towards professional development and keeping updated in the current trends of nursing as a profession.

Professional associations are important in every organization and team of workers. In the healthcare institutions, professional organizations seek to further the interest of individuals that are engaged in both the professional and public interest. Also, professional associations are important in enhancing networking between the healthcare professionals through integrating the operational processes and promoting the roles that each individual are to play. A professional association or the professional body or professional society is important in maintaining the control or oversight of the legitimate nursing practices. Also, the body plays significant roles in safeguarding the public interest. The organizations should therefore maintain their own privileges and powerful positions in controlling the professional associations. In the healthcare practices, professional organizations can be applied in enhancing the interest of the workers or healthcare professionals. The professional nursing organization that relates to my specialty area is American Foot Care Nurses Association.

Description of the Organization

American Foot Care Nurses Association was formed to create the associations for the foot care specialist. The organization also works to facilitate or enhance the activities of the foot care specialists by engaging in the research and the new practices in ensuring effective patient outcomes (American Foot Care Nurses Association, 2019c). Through the organization, nurses and other healthcare providers are able to obtain effective education and training processes required to fill the gap and provide critical care in foot care. The organization was formed in an attempt to provide an elaborate forum for nurses as well as other providers of the routine foot care. American Foot Care Nurses Association promotes corporative learning, allows effective communication, and enhance understanding of the best practice procedures and protocols. The purpose of the American Foot Care Nurses Association is to create a community of foot care specialists to advance the practices of foot care through the networking and collaborative processes of the foot care specialists or providers (Kaya & Karaca, 2018). The vision of the organization is to deliver the best possible care to different clients. The mission is to provide professional, literature based routine foot care to enable clients to live healthy, and active lives. On the other hand, the objective of the organization is to promote exposure and expand the membership. The main benefit of being a member of American Foot Care Nurses Association is the advancement in knowledge through networking on the ways of maintaining foot care for different patients.
