NURS 8114 Discussion: Translation of Evidence and Application

Effective leadership style applied in the health care industry is essential in strengthening and integrating health care delivery. In the recent past, the high quality of services offered in the health care institution often depends on the input of the nurses (Boamah et al., 2018). Effective leadership that cares about the well-being of nurses would provide nurses with the urge to raise the standards in health care delivery. My practicum on Nephrology and Dialysis further illustrated how effective leadership in the department results in skilled nurses raising healthcare standards in the field. Therefore, this paper purposes to give a summary of leadership and change experience with regards to practicum

Leadership has been defined as the connection between individuals leading and those being led. Despite the significance of numerous leadership styles in the health care setting, the transformational leadership style has been effective in the modern universe because of the sector’s integration to attain the highest level of service delivery (Collins et al., 2019). During my practicum in the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis, the team I have been working with has shown the effect that effective leadership has on training new professionals to join the nursing team in the future. For instance, making dialysis orders and writing the progress notes have been my major functions at the practicum. My collaboration with 19 Nephrologists in the hospital as in-house Nephrology NP has effectively developed ways of learning what is expected of me at the department.

Transformational leadership is the main ingredient that aids in establishing effective nursing surrounding that would aid in the attainment of objectives in my practicum setting. This kind of leadership focuses on working with a team in creating change (Fischer, 2017). The skills and training that commences from the doctor in charge of the department trickled down to all trainees in the facility. We have the best opportunity to interact with new methods of working within the department to lead a transformation that the future of the department will be relying on to dispense its services. Besides, it entails guiding a vision through inspiration and executing transformation tandem with a committed group of people. The transformation leadership style would first dwell on developing a team who would be working within a given favorable environment to realize a particular change in the health care institution (Fischer, 2017).

Case management while working with other dialysis nurses was something that I did not know I would do when I was starting my practicum. However, through the efforts of my team, I have been able to adapt to the environment and dispense my duties with the utmost skills required in the department. Besides, intertwining the work of the social workers with my work at the department has also been a success. Therefore, one of the biggest lessons that I have learned in my practicum is the power of effective leadership in training new nurses. My strength as a team player has allowed me to collaborate with my team, which has heightened my learning level during my practicum.

Conclusion

The kind of work in a health care institution requires teamwork. The work unity entails building a team among all the health care workers who will be having a major role in offering exceptional services. These services would not come from the leader watching from a distance and issuing roles, but it would be coming from acting as an example that nurses and all health care workers would be following. Setting an example is effective in building a team and creating a cohesive co-existence between leaders and subjects.
