- Reflect on your nursing experience, expertise you have developed, and beliefs about nursing and nursing practice you have formed as a result.
- Consider how your philosophy of nursing practice is shaped by these elements.
- Consider goals for expanding your professional awareness through the DNP program and the requirement as a Walden student to be an advocate for social change. How can your philosophy of nursing practice support you in these areas? How can these goals and Walden social change requirement enrich your philosophy of nursing practice?

By Day 3 of Week 1
Post an explanation of your philosophy of nursing practice that briefly describes your nursing experience and area(s) of expertise. Be sure to explain your beliefs that inform your philosophy of nursing practice and your goals for expanding your experience and practice as a DNP (e.g., embrace of diversity, global health issues, collaboration). Then, explain the DNP role as a social change agent and recommend at least one way you will advocate for positive social change as a Walden DNP. Be specific and provide examples, with all citations in APA 7 style.

By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two colleagues on 2 different days. Choose colleagues with different life experiences and beliefs from your own, and contrast how these factors have shaped their philosophies compared with yours. Also comment on their goals for expanding their experience, practice, and social change advocacy with suggestions or guidance based on your experience. Be specific and provide examples.

To contribute to the physical and mental well being of every human that is entrusted to my care with compassion and respect has been the fundamental philosophy of my nursing practice. My journey as a professional nurse began over twenty years ago in the Emergency Room. “Professions are valued by society because the services professionals provide are beneficial for members of the society” (McEwen & Wills p.2). Caring for citizens of my community during one of their most vulnerable moments in life is my passion. This unique and rewarding profession allows me to engage with people of every socio-economic background. Having a moral compass that influences my decisions and guides my practice with equality and the highest ethical standard helps to address the concepts of nursing.
Practicing the art of nursing while incorporating the continued scientific findings is one sure way of advocating for fair and just treatment for all. A condition to be improved on is the inconsistent care that is given to our homeless and mental health population within our emergency health care system. As a DNP, advocating for positive social change within the nursing practice for these two populations it would require legislative involvement. Reviewing the current local and federal laws that are in place would be a helpful start. Collaborating with community leaders and partnering with organization that are helping the homeless and mental health population. “The DNP is in the best position to effect and assess change within the clinical setting” (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, p. 73).

As I reflect on all the challenges I had to overcome in my life, it makes me more appreciative of my career choice. As a teenager, I debated between becoming a pediatrician or an educator. I knew I wanted to help others but I was unsure at what level I wanted to help. Eventually, my journey led me to some amazing careers as a nurse educator and a NICU-PICU staff nurse. My role in these areas caused me to make changes to my values and expectations of others with patient care.
My philosophy is that nurses are committed to providing compassionate, competent, and patient-centered care to all individuals regardless of any diversities that may exist. As nurses, we are constantly faced with diversity which can impact the care we provide to individuals. We allow the individual’s lack of resources, education, and cultural backgrounds to impact their outcome of care. As a nurse, I have always been an advocate for making sure that I provide the type of care to my patients and their families based on the nursing codes of ethics. My values of integrity, compassion, and equality with patient care have guided me to this next step in my professional and personal development as a nurse (Berkeley College, 2021).
In the DNP role, I want to do my part to promote health care for pediatric patients, especially children in communities with limited access to health care. During the pandemic, the medical systems throughout some states were seriously distressed in terms of providing the necessary levels of care specifically to young mothers, their children, and older adults. Before the pandemic, many young mothers were having children with limited knowledge on how to properly take care of themselves during their pregnancy or maintain a healthy lifestyle after their child is born. Unfortunately, these young mothers leave the hospital after having their babies only return if their child is exhibiting severe health problems. We know as health care professionals that a significant amount of these cases could have been mitigated through the teaching of preventive care and allowing the evidence-based practice to guide patient care. I’m very passionate about challenging myself to do my part to improve these outcomes. I understand it is not going to happen overnight but I know that utilizing the nursing process is a key component in taking the steps to improve the outcomes of these young mothers and their children.

Professional Background
My healthcare career started at the age of 19 as a CNA in long-term care. I have continued my education since that time, obtaining certifications and degrees on a fairly regular basis. I worked in long-term care and acute care as a CNA earning my medication aide and advanced CNA certificates along the way. As an LPN and RN I worked in long-term care, acute care, and home care. After obtaining my BSN I served as a Director of Nursing, Case Manager, and educator within the high school through a community college, dual credit program. I have been the Head of Health Occupations within the high school for the past seven years while obtaining my master’s in nursing education. Since graduating with my master’s degree, I founded a training center for state-approved CNA education and continuing education for healthcare professionals. My plan was to teach online while operating my training center. I found that an MSN in education is not the desired degree for online nursing education instructors, so I choose to pursue my terminal degree.
Nursing Philosophy
The focus of my nursing philosophy is grounded in the roots of nursing. Basic nursing skills and foundational nursing workers. The nursing shortage has been long talked about with minimal progress. Identifying barriers for those who want to cross the bridge into nursing and are facing barriers to great to overcome without support. Direct care workers and the limited staffing in long-term care facilities are my focus. Direct care workers need support to enter into, stay with, and advance in healthcare. “There is a need for nurses at all levels of preparation to articulate with clarity the nature of nursing knowledge and what nurses contribute to health in all realms- individual, family, local, community and global” (Rogers, 2018, p. 21).
I will assist my students to identify and overcome barriers to gaining concepts and further education. My approach to presenting material is based on the practical application of the information. Every student and student group is unique, and I strive to tailor my teaching approach to best fit the student or situation. Although the debate is not closed, it can be successfully argued that nursing is an aspiring, evolving profession (McEwen & Willis, 2019). Modeling practical application and a fluid educational approach provides the students with the ability to learn flexibility with solid concepts.
For too long, direct care workers have not received the support they need to continue their education. My DNP will allow me to give a voice to the direct care worker population with collaboration with State agencies and nursing facilities.
