I enjoyed your thoughtful discussion post. I agree with everything you contributed to the discussion regarding networking, especially that it assists in building trusting professional and academic relationships. It is also important to network with university staff, including advisors, preceptors, and the writing center, to improve our educational experience. Another great way to network with others and learn a new skill set with diverse types of populations is to volunteer (Wofford, 2018). Like yourself, I have already networked with several individuals to secure potential preceptors for field site experiences. You could tap into friends, family, or even classmates’ networks to build meaningful connections for academic and professional purposes (Wofford, 2018). You could also join professional organizations to connect with other nurse practitioners, such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or the Mississippi Association of Nurse Practitioners (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Using some of these networking techniques may assist in acquiring future family nurse practitioner employment opportunities. Professional networking is the best way to obtain your desired job (Schmidt, n.d.).

Title: NURS 6630 Week 1 Discussion Networking Opportunities

A professional and personal development plan involves a series of activities and guidelines that one targets to achieve over a given time. The plan requires one to identify the key priorities, values and approaches to achieve them. Nurses require a professional development and networking plan to have a successful career. Also, the nurses interact with different patients and other healthcare providers and so must have the right skills and competencies to have a thrilling experience and impact in the healthcare setting. The current study highlights networking for academic and professional success.

The Networking for Academic and Professional Success

Nursing is a noble profession that equips one with the skills to handle patients from different backgrounds and promote healthy living. It is always a pleasure to impact the lives of the patients positively and promoting healthy living. As nurses interact with the patients, they tend to understand the population’s health needs and so develop appropriate intervention measures that will promote the most beneficial outcomes in patients. The effectiveness of the nursing practice depends on both the training and competencies acquired through experience. Therefore, my vision as a nurse will be to influence policy developments both at the healthcare setting and national level that will promote health outcomes especially in managing chronic illnesses. My interest in chronic illness management is influenced by the fact that the number of people suffering from the illnesses has increased significantly in the recent past.

According to the ‘‘Fuelling the Passion for Nursing’’ by A framework for success in nursing. (2017), the key aspects of success in nursing practices are defined based on joining the professional organization, becoming certified, and continuing with education. Specialized nurses deal with specific health conditions. For example, some deal with psychiatric conditions while others deal in midwifery and anaesthesia administration. The education and training equip one with specific skills for the specific area of practice. However, nursing is not all about clinical practice, but, other skills such as leadership and interpersonal are required. The collaboration skills allow the nurse providers to interact appropriately with other professionals in the healthcare industry. In addition, the nurses interact with the patients in taking history and so must have proper communication and interpersonal skills.

The Walden University’s vision is to be recognized as a preeminent 21st-century school of nursing that transforms the provision of nursing services alongside the continuum of care. Furthermore, the institution visualizes equipping the nurses with the skills to serve humanity and meet all the needs of the patients. On the other hand, the mission of the organization is to provide academically rigorous and culturally relevant education programs. The Healthcare system is highly diversified both in terms of the healthcare providers and the patients. Attending to patients from different cultural backgrounds effectively can be challenging sometimes. For example, there are cases where one may encounter patients with unique cultural values that conflict with the hospital values or the treatment plan. Therefore, the institution aims at equipping the nurse graduates with the skills to handle patients from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

The Walden University’s statement on the diverse community of the students promotes the culture of diversity. The experience from the university will make it easy for me to interact with other professionals in the healthcare institution. Lack of proper communication techniques hinders effective healthcare delivery and collaboration among healthcare providers. The deficiency in the communication techniques becomes more evident where the people are not conscious of the cultural differences.

My professional and academic goals are consistent with Walden University’s mission and vision. The first goal in my professional and academic plan is to enrol in nursing professional organization in my region (Walden University – Acalog ACMS™, n.d.). The professional organization is concerned with the professional and personal growth of its members and so provides a good environment for interaction, networking, and advancing professional competencies. According to the American Nurses Association, professional development is an important section of the learning line that allows the nurses to engage and maintain their competencies and helps them achieve the professional goals. Besides, the nursing organizations empower the nurses to stay updated on the current clinical practice protocols and guidelines (Walden University – Acalog ACMS™, n.d.). Other than receiving the updates, joining a professional organization will also provide the resources, information, and opportunities for the nurses.

The scope of nursing practice tends to vary from time to time as novel patients’ needs emerge. As a result, nurses must update themselves on the new practices have a successful practice experience. Therefore, the in-practice training ensures that one has the necessary skills needed to deliver the best care to the patients. For example, one of the emerging evidence-based practices in the management of chronic illnesses is the use of telehealth to achieve the quadruple Aim goals. The telehealth system allows the nurses to connect with the patients through the electronic systems and so reduces the need for them to visit the hospital facilities. Therefore, being part of the professional organization will expose me to training opportunities and so enhance my ability to handle different patients with unique needs.

Furthermore, I have always dreamt of influencing people around me positively. Working as a registered nurse, I will utilize my empathy and compassion skills to administer patient-centered care to the patients. The approach of care requires that the nurses interact with the patients closely to identify their health needs. Such skills and competencies are important especially in the implementation of the telehealth system. On the other hand, I am also working pursuing advanced courses in nursing to equip my professional and leadership skills.

Searching for the right school may be challenging sometimes. However, I intend to get a school that offers flexible class programs that can allow me to acquire an excellent education as I work on a full-time basis. The Walden University offers such flexible schedules. The advanced nurse practice will create an opportunity to transform the healthcare sector through research and policy formulation. The U.S healthcare system has undergone a significant transition to offer affordable care to the populations. The Medicaid and Medicare programs were developed to improve access and the quality of the healthcare the patients receive. On the other hand, a significant concern emerged with the rising cost of medication. The government would spend more funds on the healthcare sector, and this constrained the budget significantly. Therefore, develop better policies and approaches to improve the health experiences and outcomes for the patients will help reduce the medication costs and increase access to all the populations in the U.S.

Incorporating of Social Change

As a student at the Walden University, I purpose to learn and apply new skills as well as to adapt to the various critical health issues and challenges. The role of evidence-based practice in the healthcare setting is important in creating new medications, programs, and infection prevention approaches. Therefore, I will be committed to acquire new knowledge and show empathy to all the patients I interact with within my professional practice.

Conclusion

Finally, other than the educational advancement, I will aim to interact with advanced nurse practitioners to understand their experiences and how they have managed to overcome various challenges in the professional practice. The advancement in education will equip them with better clinical skills to handle the patients better and influence research and policymaking. The plan defines what a successful nursing professional practice entails and why pursuing them will be fulfilling.

Who I am and What I Want to Be: based on Walden University’s Mission and Vision

I have been an RN for almost 11 years.  As an RN, I have worked in Mental Health and then went to nursing homes. I tried a pediatric practice as a triage nurse (those women made my crazy people look sane), but I have always returned to Mental Health (MH) no matter what I tried.  I am currently the RN Supervisor at an inpatient MH facility that opened only six months ago.  I have worked in MH on and off for 20 years in various capacities, from a crisis worker to the psych intake coordinator in a very busy ER.  No matter how hard I try, I can’t help but return to the MH field. That is why I am currently working on my PMHNP through Walden.

I decided on Walden because they are one of the very few online schools that offer the PMHNP program and they also came highly recommended by several of my colleagues. Two of my coworkers are attending Walden currently but are much further in their studies than I am, and one is an NP here at the facility.    While these people did have some influence on my choice of Walden, it was Walden’s SON vision and mission that pulled me in.  The idea of serving a diverse community of professionals to allow them to become scholar-practitioners was intriguing.  I also liked that Walden is interested in how they can provide their students with the knowledge to go out into the world and make a positive change (Walden University, 2019).  The SON seems to take a positive vision that their students will impact social change.  I had started my journey toward my PMHNP at Aspen University, and after only two classes realized that it wasn’t for me.  When my coworker suggested I check out Walden, I figured I had nothing to lose because I wanted to get on with my education to go out and practice as an NP.  The RN-MSN program with a PMHNP track was exactly what I was looking for to further my education.  I did not need another BS degree since I already have one in Forensic Science (a past life). The bridge courses from RN to get into the MSN program seemed feasible, so I joined up.  Now that I have completed that portion of the curriculum, I am excited to start this new journey.

My student advisor has been beneficial in this process, guiding me through the program and explaining how to balance school and work (Walden, 2019).  I also have a Facebook group that has managed to help each other through these first classes.  When we started, there were 10-12 of us in the group, and now, we are down to five, but the five of us have been there for each other through everything.  Not just supporting each other academically but also personally.  We have established a network amongst ourselves that genuinely are there for one another.  Since day one, we have said that we will be able to get through this if we do it together, and so far, we have. As described by Schmidt, n.d., we are a group of people with a common interest who help each other and share knowledge.

Since I have worked in the MH field, I have noticed that these patients don’t have many opportunities as other patients.  One of the things that I have always wanted to do was open a transitional housing facility for MH patients.  It has always bothered me throughout my career that many MH patients are discharged back to their homes with no assistance or, worse, discharged to the street with no place to go.  These individuals tend to be readmitted to our facility frequently.  If there was a place they could go that would continue to help them with their medication, give them some job skills and life skills training, they might have a better chance of caring for themselves. Even patients discharged home with family support do not always receive the type of support they need.  These homes’ goal is to help these individuals learn how to go back to living a productive life through management of their illness, goal setting, and assisting with education or employment (communityhope-nj.org, 2020). To start this type of housing, there needs to be a licensed master level professional involved for licensure of the facility.  I hope that when I complete my PMHNP program, I can be that person.  I have spoken to other professionals who want to help, and they have their networks of individuals who they feel will also be able to help.  Again, this shows how important networking can be.

I look forward to starting this journey with this course as a stepping stone for my professional goals.  I also hope that throughout this process, Walden University helps me to continue to grow and develop into a scholarly-practitioner.

My University Goals, Vision and Missions

“To be successful, you have to use each day as an opportunity to improve, to do better and to get a little bit closer to your goals”.  The more you accomplish, the more you will want to do, the higher you will want to reach (Lydia Sweatt,2016). My name is Mia Christine Uy, from Washington State. I graduated with Bachelors of Nursing ’93 in the Philippines. I have been in a different area in Nursing.  In 2004, My Nursing journey had change and I continue to explore myself by coming here in the United States.  I may look so experienced because I have been on a nursing field for 27 years, but I have something to say, It’s the opportunity and the search of how I make myself best in my purpose in life.

Walden understands the dreams and nurses. Developed and taught by real practitioner, offers online programs which empowers to further education without pausing one’s life, make your voice be heard and shape nursing career you have always wanted to be (Walden University, n.d). The vision is for graduate to transform nursing to meet the needs of the communities (Walden University,2011a). When the Covid crisis came and changed our lives, it is a lot to ponder and realization of how my life and career is important. How I valued my career knowing of what I do and offer it to people. Being a nurse is a continuum, seeking advancement and new learning makes you one step higher among others. Transforming self from a novice nurse to an expert nurse (Laureate Education, videofile2 0.16sec)

While I am searching for an online school, Walden University pop out on my screen. Started the application and the enrollment officer called back and give me information.  Walden University practices a policy of non-discrimination in admission to, access to and employment in its program and activities (Walden University,2020). Walden is efficient, flexible and navigating resources in helping their student to be successful (Laureate Education, videofile2). As I am new in an online classroom environment, I want to seek the best school there is. When I search their history as online school, I know I will never go wrong of my choice. Importantly, the track records of their professors. My academic goals resonate the mission and vison of Walden. I will not settle for less. I want to reach the finish line knowing I choose the best school for me. The support and resources are endless, and they make you feel that you are important in achieving your dreams.

Incorporation of Social Change

Nursing is a fast pace to change. You have to be innovated and determined to accelerate self.  It is not stagnant, and it keeps on changing that you have to adapt the modernization on this field. Even in reality of life, we are multi-tasking. I have this vison in mind, that I can be worth of what I do by adapting to change.  I can be an invaluable resource for knowledge that can be instrumental in advancing nursing career (Schimidt, K.(n.d.). Using Professional Networking will lead the way that changes can happen. Two heads are better than one. Seeking connections will be an instrument that will assist to change whether looking for a new opportunity. Getting referrals or access to people that will change and move you up step higher. Coming from an old school and updating self on this fast modern technology is the reason of choosing Nursing Informatics. I will be excited to finish this program and apply in the modern nursing.

A Sample Answer 5 For the Assignment: NURS 6630 Week 1 Discussion Networking Opportunities

Title: NURS 6630 Week 1 Discussion Networking Opportunities

I am very excited to embark on this journey with you all! I work in the field of acute critical care in a small community hospital in the Philadelphia suburbs. I’ve been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for five years and have always wanted to further my education. As a result, my acceptance into this program is both exciting and terrifying. The majority of this course appears to be devoted to networking and identifying people who can help you in times of stress. My two older brothers and one younger brother are both nurses in Acute or Long Term Intensive Care. Both of my parents are registered nurses. My mother has worked as an ER nurse for thirty years, and my father has also worked as a nurse for thirty years. My father has always been an advocate for continuing education (he holds many degrees himself, from Bachelors in nursing to MBA). I had a positive impression of what I was signing up for after reviewing Walden’s vision, missions, goals, and societal change because of his emphasis on “never slowing down” and “always utilizing education to help you improve.” In contrast to Walden’s Mission While reading Walden’s “Visions,” it became clear that their goal is to promote the greater good. Hopefully, learning knowledge to help me grow in a professional setting will reflect the impact we all hope to make, which is to promote the greatest good to those we care for on a daily basis.

The “missions” section simply emphasized the importance of having an outlet that promotes growth in an individual, in this case through an educational program. Walden’s mission of assisting in the transition into a knowledgeable and confident nurse who serves the greater good aligns perfectly with the roles my father attempted to instill in me at a young age, as previously discussed. Walden provides a number of program objectives, but one in particular stood out to me. The ultimate goal, according to their website, is “to produce graduates who are scholarly, reflective practitioners and agents for positive change” (Walden University, n.d.). This stood out because I really enjoy the second half. Change is a term that is thrown around too often without emphasizing its significance, and hearing my father’s influence float around throughout my life has made me realize how powerful change can be. From Walden’s perspective, social change appears to be entirely driven by growth and development, with the implication of application to a society for the greater good. The social change aspect really appeals to me because it emphasizes not only the importance of this knowledge, but also the importance of applying the skills we will learn along the way. Through Walden, I hope to hone my application skills in order to better serve those with whom we interact on a daily basis. Walden provides University Outcomes that appear to flawlessly wrap up everything mentioned previously.

The second outcome is the most pertinent to my objectives and desires as a result of this program, as it covers everything I’ve mentioned. According to the mission statement, the objective is to use the acquired knowledge to benefit the community, society, and profession. Following in the footsteps of my father, I hope that this program will assist me in fostering the growth of individuals with whom I interact, whether by providing for an individual or the entire community in which I serve. Possible Networking Opportunities NURS 6003 Final Considerations and Conclusion I really anticipate participating in Walden’s community service, which is absolutely remarkable. The world is a constantly evolving place, and the healthcare industry is no exception. According to the author of “Missions and Organizational Performance in the Healthcare Industry,” “the diverse characteristics of the healthcare market make it essential for employees at all levels to not only have a clear understanding of what they are trying to accomplish, but also a sense of support and involvement in determining the mission” (Forehand, A., 2000). This is something I truly believe in, and Walden’s comprehension of my goals is crucial. Another item I read stated, “Successful organizations will be those that are unwavering in their pursuit of their vision, unrelenting in their commitment to their goal, and unwavering in their commitment to their values” (MacLeod L.,2016). Every argument made by Walden is consistent, and I’ve found myself aligning with their vision. I believe in the success that this organization will bring and look forward to achieving the personal goals that my father defined for me when I was younger and growing with the principles that this institution offers! Discussion: Networking Possibilities NURS 6003

Title: NURS 6630 Week 1 Discussion Networking Opportunities

I do agree with you that Walden University provides an opportunity for the MSN nursing students to continue their professional development (Monti, 2020). The curriculum is enriched to enhance proper career development that is built on a strong foundation. Some of the areas of focus include promoting a culture of evidence-based practice that is at the core of modern-day nursing practice and one of the key avenues to initiating change to nursing and clinical practice. Additionally, the Walden MSN training insists on development of excellent communication skills. This builds a foundation for the advancement of collaborative working and success of multidisciplinary teams’ approach that is the core to complex nursing and medical situations (Heath, 2018). Networking is also one of the key requirements by nursing students so that they can expand their connections and explore more opportunities (Carlson, 2016). This also provides avenues for professional exchange of experiences and work to improve each other.

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

I have been a nurse for five years. I started my career as a neuro med surg nurse where I quickly learned neuro was more than just dealing with the nervous system. There were some patients that dealt with psychology issues as well. The last four years of my nursing career I did travel nursing to different states, as well as locally. During this journey I learned patient care does not change, and do to the pandemic more people are dealing with psych issues. My long term professional goal is to become a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

I participated in the AIM program at Walden which involved me getting my BSN degree with the completion of 3 Master classes. To reach this goal I just remained active and did not take any breaks to achieve this professional goal. As stated in Walden vision statement nursing, health, and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals and local and global communities. (2021a) I believe this is true. I have taken everything I have learned in previous courses with this university and use the knowledge I gained in my everyday nursing.

Since I am a returning Walden University student, I believe the mission speak value within itself, you do not just obtain knowledge you also utilize it in your everyday advanced profession as well, this is why I continued to further my education at this facility.

Incorporation of Social Change

In addition, Walden supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society (Walden University, 2021b, para. 4) I plan on becoming a mental health nurse practitioner and working in a practice where I am able to utilize my skills that obtain from this program. I hope to educate the community and be the resource for other communities. I also would not mind doing some telehealth for healthcare facilities.
