Sample Answer for NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim Included After Question

Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.

More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.

To Prepare:

  • Read the articles by Sikka, Morath, & Leape (2015); Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle (2016); and Kim et al. (2016) provided in the Resources.
  • Reflect on how EBP might impact (or not impact) the Quadruple Aim in healthcare.
  • Consider the impact that EBP may have on factors impacting these quadruple aim elements, such as preventable medical errors or healthcare delivery.

To Complete:

A Sample Answer 2 For the Assignment: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Title: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Evidence-based practice (EBP) has an extreme reliance on the available scientific proof in making decisions within the clinical facility. This system of practice has gained approval since its introduction in the 1990s and is currently being relied upon in the formulation of public policies, management, nursing practice, and education. Evidence-based practice adopts the available proof from the excellent scientific researches, the choices and values of clients, and the knowledge of the clinicians in making decisions concerning their patients’ care (Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle, 2016). The evidence-based practice aims to make sure that the services availed to clients are safe and of high quality. In addition, the model of evidence-based practice emulates an inter-professional system where sharing on decision making is greatly practiced. The majority of nurses have shown a positive attitude towards the evidence-based practice model. Crabtree et al., (2016), the majority of them (nurses) are ready and willing to equip themselves with the required knowledge and skills for its implementation in the clinical practice.

There are four main goals in the quadruple aim. They include population health, reducing healthcare-associated costs, and the work-life of healthcare providers (Kim et al., 2016). To achieve the four goals, quadruple aim intends to redesign the healthcare facilities. Nevertheless, improving population health whereas reducing healthcare costs, that demand high standards of effectiveness and efficiency remains to be a great challenge.

The establishment and implementation of evidence-based practice primarily aim to improve and promote the quality of the health service provided and upholds a great value on the care of clients within the hospital facility. The work life of healthcare practitioners are affected by this model as the employees must stand out productively in order to provide a high quality healthcare services that are safe. Every healthcare facility exists to better the lives of patients as well as those of healthcare workers (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015).

 Patient experience

The entire evidence-based practice methodologies enable healthcare practitioners to employ research evidence in clinical practice. Healthcare workers and nurses can effectively integrate existing scientific information into clinical practice based on specific patient requirements by employing effective literature searching abilities and explicitly following the criteria that guide evidence to assess study findings (Kim et al., 2016). As a result, the quality of healthcare services provided to patients improves. Most healthcare facilities have recently adopted evidence-based practice to address clinical challenges that directly affect patient care, which has resulted in better patient care.

Population health

The aim of evidence based practice is to educate people on, cultural practices, advantages of specific therapies and health determinants. An equal allocation of resources to achieve certain goals is ensured when evidence based approaches are integrated in a variety of demographic contexts. People can be grouped based on their needs, which are determined by family support, individual health, and socioeconomic status which promote equity and effectiveness in resource distribution for the purpose of health promotion (Kim et al., 2016).

Costs

The assessment of per capita healthcare costs, which requires all healthcare costs to be recorded, indexing costs to the healthcare market and measurement of real costs is a serious obstacle for most healthcare institutions.  Pricing and discounts are the frequently used methods to determine actual costs. Its really challenging for majority of the healthcare facilities strike equilibrium in providing safe quality care at a lower cost as most healthcare facilities are investing fortune in getting 21st century technologies in order to improve quality of care and all those comes with a high price tag (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015).

Work-life of healthcare workers

The important elements of a favorable healthcare working environment should promote inter-professional collaboration. This system (Inter-professional collaboration has been noted to the prognosis of patients’ health and satisfaction the healthcare workers. Additionally, it minimizes the turnover and burnout rates of practitioners, which enhances staff output. The three main components in such an environment comprise active engagement of the staff members in decision making, structural, and policy features (Kim et al., 2016).

A Sample Answer 3 For the Assignment: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Title: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

With increasing healthcare demand, the healthcare system has been advancing drastically over the years, with the introduction of  Evidence-based Practice (EBP) for the provision of safe and quality care. Several models such as the triple aim which has evolved to quadruple aim have also been established to promote population health with enhanced patients experience at a reduced cost (Bowles et al., 2018). Healthcare experts believe that the incorporation of EBP into current clinical practice will help reach the Quadruple Aim. As such, the purpose of the present paper is to discuss the quadruple aim and its role in evidence-based practice.

EBP and the Quadruple Aim on Patient Experience

The quadruple aim is focused on the creation of better care output among patients, at a reduced cost, with an improved experience for both the patient and the healthcare provider. With EBP, all the four measures of the quadruple aim can be achieved. For instance, utilization of EBP in the delivery of care and decision-making process on the most appropriate intervention promotes the experience of the patient, with improved care outcome (Haverfield et al., 2020). Patients tend to feel safe when clinicians utilize evidence-based treatment approaches when taking care of them.

EBP and the Quadruple Aim on Population Health

Concerning population health, EBP promotes the utilization of research in better understanding the characteristics, values, needs, and preferences of a certain population, which are key elements in care delivery. For instance, common chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions have posed great challenges over the years, with increasing morbidity and mortality rates (Wagner et al., 2018). However, EBP, through research has led to the introduction of novel approaches which are time efficient and easily accessible helping populations with the highest prevalence of these comorbidities hence promoting the achievement of the quadruple aim.

EBP and the Quadruple Aim on Healthcare Cost

Additionally, with the introduction of EBP, clinicians have reported improved prognosis of several health complications with has reduced hospitalization rate hence reduced healthcare costs. Consequently, the use of proven diagnostic tools and treatment approaches has led to a reduced treatment period, hence reducing the costs associated with diagnostic tests and medication (Haverfield et al., 2020). Clinicians have also been trained to utilize cost-effective care approaches and avoid unnecessary procedures to help reach the quadruple aim.

EBP and the Quadruple Aim on Work-Life of Healthcare Providers

Lastly, despite EBP promoting patient-centered care, the experience of the healthcare workforce has also been considered for optimal care benefits. As the fourth element of the quadruple aim, EBP has ensured that clinicians are adequately trained to utilize time-saving and effective medical tools, to improve the efficiency of the care process (Haverfield et al., 2020). The current healthcare system has introduced several interventions through EBP to decrease provider burnouts, stress, and depression which would otherwise lead to poor health outcomes and decreased patient satisfaction.

Conclusion

The healthcare system has evolved over the years towards the provision of safe and quality services. Currently, clinicians are encouraged to utilize EBP in care provision to improve the quality and efficiency of care provided at a reduced cost (Wagner et al., 2018). In the same line, the quadruple aim which evolved recently from the triple aim focuses on four main elements which can be achieved with the incorporation of EBP into current clinical practice.

Title: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

EBP is highly dependent on the availability of empirical data in the healthcare community for decision-making. Since its formal introduction in the 1990s, EBP has continued to evolve in the fields of management, public policy formation, education, and nursing practice (Lavenberg, Cacchione, & Jayakumar, 2019). EBP is the most effective technique for resolving problems in a medical setting because it incorporates the best available evidence from well-designed systematic studies, values, and patient preferences, as well as clinicians’ discretion regarding patient care. EBP is a cross-professional model that promotes high probabilities of success and relies heavily on collaborative decision-making. Similarly, acceptance and application of EVP are contingent upon disparate actors at the federal, national, and indigenous levels. The four-fold objective is primarily focused on improving the patient experience, population health, the working lives of healthcare providers, and healthcare costs (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). The fourfold objective is to redesign healthcare facilities in order to accomplish the aforementioned goals. However, a significant impediment to achieving these goals in the broader health sector is maintaining or reducing health care costs.

All of the techniques used in EBP enable healthcare professionals to turn scientific outcomes into clinical practice. By the effective usage of writings searching abilities and the formal application of guidelines that guide evidence to evaluate investigation results, nurses and other healthcare providers can efficiently apply scientific information to clinical practice based on individual patient needs. It improves the efficiency of the clinical care provided by patients (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015). In recent years, several healthcare organizations have been adopting evidence-based approaches to address clinical problems, which have a significant effect on patient care.

Population health

EBP aims to inform populations about the determinants of wellbeing, the advantages, and disadvantages of particular therapies, cultural and environmental behaviors. In order to maintain an equal allocation of capital in order to accomplish particular objectives, which incorporate evidence-based approaches across the various communities (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). The populations may be categorized by socio-economic background, the family, and person health condition help, and therefore, the allocation and delivery of health promotion services are balanced and effective. All evidence-based processes have specifically been designed to meet individual patient needs as opposed to sub-group shaping of health care patterns.

I I agree with you  and also would like to add , the WHO  has a significant impact on  the quality of care that patients receive with   their health outcomes and quality of life. Thus, the use of effective health decision-making tools and effective disease treatment and management techniques is crucial. Evidence-based practice (EBP) acknowledges this need. In nursing, EBP facilitates the integration of evidence and clinical experience, and it promotes the recognition of health consumers’ right to participate in the care process.

There has been increasing recognition of the importance of research. This recognition has led to a surge in the number of studies, which investigate the factors that either promote or deter the provision of quality care. EBP promotes the integration of this growing body of knowledge and practice (Ellis, 2019). This integration, in turn, ensures that the clinical decisions that nurses make are based on valid, reliable, and current research findings leading to the delivery of quality care. The provision of quality care, which is aligned with patients’ values and beliefs, in turn, enhances health outcomes leading to the achievement of substantial improvements in public health. EBP also enables nurses to examine critically the merits and demerits of different diagnostic and treatment protocols resulting in the provision of safe health services.

A Sample Answer 5 For the Assignment: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Title: NURS 6052 Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Healthcare practice is a rapidly changing field whereby the application of evidence-based practices results in an improvement of the health quality given to the population. The EBP emphasizes the quality of care hence resulting in improved outcomes for the patients (Dagne & Beshah, 2021). Additionally, it helps minimize fatigue among the care providers and reduces the costs in healthcare. EBP requires that health professionals familiarize themselves with current trends in healthcare. Therefore, I will be reviewing the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)website and if it supports EBP.

The AANP is an organization that grants membership to practitioners and practitioner students. The organization has over 105,000 members working in harmony to improve the image of nursing. The benefits are increased access to continuing education, provision of networking opportunities, advocacy of federal and state policies, and access to the latest medical journals. While going through this website, I feel that the use of EBP is apparent. For instance, it was apparent at the site for the press room, the site for research opportunities, and the practice-related research site (AANP, 2018).

Additionally, the work of the AANP has a firm base for the EBP. By exploring the website, I came across an area of documentation that is in supports how nurse practitioners are engaged in medically assisted treatment and in managing opioid use. The information is documented on how the practitioner nurses help to promote positive outcomes. Graphs and infographics were also used for the review (AANP, 2019). Since opioid use is a national health crisis, the evidence-based practices from the website help to provide strategies that advanced nurse practitioners can use in advancing the practices, promoting quality of care, minimizing health costs, and improving and promoting the positive outcome of the patient.

Since I decided to embark on my academic carrier, I am strongly convicted that I should also become a member of an organization that supports evidence-based practices. As I become a nurse practitioner, I believe that I will be able to promote change and make use of the EBP from multiple sources to promote change in care practices. Therefore, I will advocate for improved patient care outcomes, reducing healthcare spending, and improving the quality of care delivery (Htay & Whitehead, 2021). By joining the organization of AANP, I will align with people of the same mind of integrating evidence into practice hence helping the patients we serve.

The key to ensuring patient safety and receiving high-quality care is evidence-based practice. In order to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and quality of care, as well as to empower clinicians and produce better results, healthcare organizations are encouraging the use of the evidence-based practice. Many healthcare clinicians rely on evidence-based data to make clinical decisions and enhance patient outcomes. Healthcare clinicians use evidence-based practice data to manage patient care since such data is based on empirical research rather than expert opinion or anecdotal evidence. The National Institutes of Health is the healthcare institution I have chosen to concentrate on. This healthcare organization explores, supports, and addresses public health issues using clinical trials and evidence-based practice data. Ideally, it also reports its use of EBP practice on its website. For instance, the institution provided critical data beneficial in investigating the treatment of coronavirus.

The National Institute of Health focuses on biomedical research that helps and saves patients’ lives (National Institute of Health, 2022). Its department of human and health services is located in Bethesda, Maryland. Clinical trials are used by this healthcare provider to address scientific queries and aid in diagnosing, treating, or preventing disease. Their website’s research and training section highlights evidence-based practice information recommended or generated by the institution (National Institute of Health, 2022). The healthcare organization receives funds from congress for research within the labor and health of the human services budget bill. Ideally, 27 institutes and centers that conduct and coordinate research on various biomedical topics are part of this healthcare organization.

This institution uses clinical trials to examine diseases, drug interactions, and the effects of interventions on patient outcomes. Because this healthcare organization uses clinical trials, the government, stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, and institute review and revisit policies and procedures to protect participants, utilize resources effectively, and make sure essential research questions are answered (Vardeny et al., 2019). Information provided by this institution is based on evidence-based practice and is constantly tested for efficacy before publication. Evidence-based practice is essential in enhancing patient care, and NIH understands such significance (National Institute of Health, 2022). For instance, if patient symptoms are not managed early by evidence-based practice, then chances of exacerbating costs for the patient and healthcare industry, decreasing patient satisfaction, increasing the length of stay, causing staff burnout, and increasing poor health outcome increase (Mullings, 2019).

In the websites research and training section, one can also access a summary of the research findings and a link to the original research articles. Healthcare professionals can use such information to make a clinical decision without the challenge of perusing or interrogating lengthy articles. For instance, I found an article about advances in colorectal cancer research on the website. Accessing such information from the website is easy since provided information is summarized. Ideally, the link containing one article or evidence also highlights other related sources from where additional evidence can be obtained.

I use this website at work to educate patients and family members and to learn more about current illnesses and medications. Medical professionals can use NIH as a great resource to help direct patient care. My perception of the healthcare sector has changed due to the information I have learned from the NIH website. As medical technology advances, healthcare professionals can access updated and current evidence-based knowledge to enhance patient outcomes. For instance, if a patient presents to the hospital with hazy symptoms, medical professionals can use cutting-edge diagnostic tools to identify the illness’s root cause and deliver effective treatment with a shorter hospital stay. Patients and family members can also stay informed on recent clinical trials and evidence-based practices because the information is freely available on the website. Patients with chronic diseases who have access to this information can read it, talk to their doctors about it, and obtain better treatment options. Clinical trials carried out to investigate various healthcare issues are reported on the National Institute of Health website. Ideally, every care provider can use the information provided by this organization to enhance the delivery of patient care.
