Peer-Reviewed Article Citation

Stapleton, H. J. (2021). COVID-19 changes to Post Anaesthesia Care Unit nursing practices. Journal of Perioperative Nursing34(2), e-19-e-21. https://doi-org.ezp.waldenulibrary.org/10.26550/2209-1092.1113

For the purposes of this discussion, I chose an article that was related to COVID-19 because as a nurse actively working in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) through this pandemic, I can honestly say that standards of care are continually changing and evolving.  There is no doubt that this pandemic has greatly affected our day-to-day work responsibilities and job duties.  I believe that it is important to explore changes in care due to COVID-19 and how it affects nurses and their provision of care, specifically in the PACU.

Searching Databases

As a current graduate student who has previously obtained a master’s degree from Walden University, I did not find much difficulty when searching for this article.  Throughout the years, I have learned many tips and tricks to make it easy to narrow a search so that I find articles specific to my topic of interest.  For example, in order to find this article, I searched the CINAHL database only as it contains literature relevant to nursing and allied health (Stillwell et al., 2010).  This is helpful since I was looking for an article related to an area of interest in nursing.  In addition, I was able to use Boolean phrases to enhance my search.  For instance, I typed “pacu AND nursing” in the search bar when navigating through the Walden Library.  This populated articles related to not only issues in the PACU, but also included those issues that involved the field of nursing (Walden University Library, n.d-b).

CINAHL Database

This database would be useful to my colleagues due to the fact that it contains journals especially useful for the nursing profession.  In addition, the database yields articles that are scholarly academic journals.  Scholarly journals are those written by academics for those in academia.  These articles are written specifically to research gaps in knowledge of a particular topic with the goal of advancing the scholarship in that area.  I would recommend this database because it is easy to navigate and there are multiple ways to refine search criteria to find relevant articles pertaining to a specific area of interest.  Articles in this database also include a background/literature review, clear and concise methodology, and cited sources.  This provides the reader with a clear understanding of what is being studied, how the study was conducted, and where current information was obtained (Walden University Library, n.d.-b).  Therefore, the reader has increased confidence that a particular article was written without opinion or bias, and the information within is also supported by experts in the field.

Congratulations on your successful search. I appreciate your activities for success. I am wondering how you know that the article you choose is peer reviewed. Thanks for sharing.

After typing in the search terms, I am redirected to the EBSCO discovery service where I can refine my search.  On the left hand side, there is a section that says “Limit To” and an option to check a box that says “Peer Reviewed Scholarly Journals Only”.  If I click that box, the search is refined to include only peer-reviewed journals only.  It is very helpful when searching the library.

Thanks for adding this information. If you know the content of the article you are looking for, using key words will also limit your search.

Hello Patrice. I admire your passion towards changes in care related to COVID and how it has, and will continue to, impact us. I agree with you that the pandemic has affected our day-to-day job responsibilities and job duties. At my place of employment, the patients and staff continue to wear masks, patients need to be covid tested prior to admitting and we discharge anyone that is having respiratory symptoms. It has really become the new norm and it makes me anxious to see what the future of our practice will entail. I am quite jealous that you are so familiar with the database search engines. I’m sure it’s one of those things you just get use to the more practice you have with it.

Staying up to date with our practice is so important in our field. Researching and reading articles, such as the one you provided, will allow us to take information from resources, interpret what we’ve learned and present new ideas or insights in our own way (Shellenbarger, 2016).

I assume we will be researching many articles and writing many scholarly papers throughout the course of our program. One way to enhance our writing skills would be to attend a Webinar through the writing center of Walden University. These Webinars offer multiple tools to help the student succeed such as; learning resources and services offered for students of all writing skills, degree levels, and programs, connect with other Walden students working on their writing and meet and ask questions of Writing Center writing instructors (Walden University Writing Center n.d.). This is something I feel I could really benefit from and plan to attend.

Thank you for posting how you found you article!  I also used the CINAHL nursing database and found it very easy to use.  I found an article on how the pandemic changed the role of nurse practitioners in some areas of practice.  When researching an article, I always find it helpful to complete a quick scan of the article to check if it is peer-reviewed.  Luckily, the Walden University library search engine allows to narrow searches down to peer-reviewed articles only.  The peer-review system is a way that academic research is verified by field experts in order to ensure that it is credible (Walden University Library, n.d.).  After using the Boolean phrases like you discussed, there is an option to narrow your search results to only peer-reviewed articles. When using an article for academic research, it is necessary to conduct a quick analysis on the important subject matter to develop your own concepts.  In an article by Shellenbarger (2016), she explains tips that professionals use during this assessment.  For example, look for the main thesis of the article, identify the good and bad parts of the work (the aspects that really make it a strong and weak resource), state if there is a need for further research, and identify what the research is missing to make it a more credible source.  Finally, you should be able to connect the ideas presented in a source with others in order to create your own thoughts and feelings on the stance of your research (Shellenbarger, 2016).   I think with your tips on the CINAHL database, we can use all this information to become more effective academic researchers.

Thank you for the great post!

Great post Patrice! I also used CINHAL to find my peer reviewed scholarly article (Walden University Library, n.d.b).  Using the Walden University Library database resource made finding CINHAL quite easy (Walden University Library, n.d.a).  This was my first experience with CINHAL, according to your post, you have been using it for a while.  CINHAL is a great database, as you mentioned, it is all related to nursing which is exactly what we need for this program.  I recommend entering words into all three of the search bars that CINHAL provides, as it further helps narrow your search to what you are looking for.  The filters provided by this database also ensures that the articles being searched are already fitting scholarly requirements such as being peer reviewed (Walden University Library, n.d.b).  Considering you have more experience with this database, do you also find these features useful?

I have also had good results using CINAHL in the past.  Did you get as many search results as anticipated using this database with your chosen topic?  I imagine there is a lot of research that falls under the COVID umbrella but because this is still relatively new, I am curious how much peer-reviewed and topic-specific information is available.  I could see Boolean phrases, which help the database to return more relevant search results (Walden Library University, n.d.-b), being especially helpful here, for example using “COVID19 OR COVID-19 AND PACU”.   I have found the Walden library to be very helpful in identifying criteria for scholarly articles, how to find them in full text, and using the Walden database as a resource (Walden University Library, n.d.-a).  This website also provides examples for other publications to assist with identification in your research.  What did you find most interesting about the article you chose?

This is an outstanding work. You have clearly cited a peer-reviewed article from CINAHL database and provided a description based on the course requirements. I agree with your post. Undoubtedly, CINAHL database is useful and should be recommended to nursing students as you state (Hopia & Heikkilä, 2020). In addition, several strategies can be used to enhance the process of searching for articles using this database. One of such strategies is the use of Boolean operators, which include the words “AND”, “OR” and “NOT” (El‐Amawy & Sarsik, 2021). When these words are utilized in library database by typing them between the keywords, they tend to make search more specific and save time. In particular, using the word “AND” is essential in narrowing a search by informing the database that all they keywords searched must be found in the article that appears in the list of results. Through this Boolean, two or more concepts can be searched together (Gahungu et al., 2021). “OR” is used to can be used to inform the database that any of the words connected can apply. “NOT” on its side narrows the search by informing the database to eradicate all the terms after it.

It may be very challenging to obtain desired peer-reviewed articles from the CINAHL database. However, using CINAHL can be very helpful.  One important thing to put into consideration when searching for articles in CINAHL is to limit the search to nursing peer reviewed articles. Also, one needs to be careful on the terms used for the search. When the search terms are too broad, too many results many of which are irrelevant may be found and it may be difficult to find the desired article. On the other hand, being too specific might lead to omission of important articles that could be relevant (Clancy, 2018). It is important that one is careful with the search terms.

Hello Patrick, I found your review incredible because of the current topic that it deals with and the pandemic’s impact on our daily and work lives. I liked how you explained step by step your search in the Walden University Library. In my case, I feel it was a quick search by clicking on the link, which directed me to the nursing database (Westerlund, 2020). I selected CINAHL, and I could access several articles and narrow the search to the topic that interested me. The library is intensive and valuable for all colleagues to conduct adequate research on various issues of their choosing (Walden University, 2016). The tool also helps assess when a systemic review is performed; therefore, it is essential to evaluate the relevant information. Incorporating reputable, peer-reviewed articles and resources is crucial when establishing credible health professional services bodies (Schmitz, 2017).

I enjoyed reading your post and I can relate to a lot of what you said in it. I feel that more then ever with the amount of research, journals, articles and opinions that will be published in regard to COVID we need to step back and critically analyze whether the article or data is scholarly. According to Laureate Education “it is important for nurses to conduct research; we are at the bedside and we see problems that need to be addressed that perhaps others would not see” (2018). This is critical when we begin to analyze the data that is being published by multiple parties. We are in a good position to do our own research and start the process of changing what does not work for these patients and we can accomplish this with credible data and peer review research ourselves. As bedside nurses we are in a crucial role to change health care and get our findings out to other organizations that can benefit from what we have learned.

I also agree with you that research poses challenges when using the online libraries. I also struggled with it. When I looked up education and COVID for example I was presented with so much information that it was overwhelming and when I researched it more I found a lot of the information was not scholarly but public press releases and opinions without much data to them.  When I was evaluating the articles and journals I relied on the Walden Library’s page on Evaluating Resources for some key points to check for the credibility of the publication. I found a lot of trade publications which according to the library “are written by staff writers or practitioners in a given trade or profession. The intent is to share industry news, trends and advances”( Walden Library, n.d.). Some of the articles are peer reviewed but a majority do not get peer reviewed. In the future I am going to use your recommendation to use the “Advanced Search” tab and see if I cannot rein in some of the topics that come up when I do a complete search. This may help with some of my frustration and time it takes me to research articles. Thank you.
