The evening of graduating with my (LPN ) Licensed Practical Nurse certificate at Farmingdale State College, there were two ceremonies held. The Associate degree in Nursing, and the Licensed Practical Nurse. My decision was easily inspired by the vast amount of knowledge easily accessible as a nurse in the medical field, whether accessed to the internet, work library, school library. Advise, shared options from colleges, managers, Nurse Educators, (NP) Nurse Practitioners, and (MD) Medical Doctor at work, and advisement specialist. There is no doubt in my mind I have chosen the path that I truly am passionate about to become a (FNP).

My personal decision I have chosen to become a (FNP) Family Nurse Practitioner in the MSN at Walden University was difficult because, I am currently a mother of two children, when they are not feeling well I wished I had chosen Pediatric Nurse Practitioner because of the lack of knowledge, not helping them efficiently.

The career path I have chosen to specializing in my nursing career is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) because I started as a  Home Health Aide (HHA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), License Practical Nurse (LPN), (BSN) Bachelor of Science in Nursing as mostly exposed to the adult population. I have learned so much from past experiences, and most comfortable in the specialty, and now I am currently pursuing my (MSN) Master of Science in Nursing at Walden University because of the enormous support to chose my specialty of interest. Inspired Choice

Throughout my nursing career, I have cared for adults and geriatric patients. I am currently in an administrative role and debated on focusing on Nurse Executive. This was very appealing to me. It isn’t easy to find a professional organization supporting younger nursing generations (Cherry, Caramanica, Everett, Fennimore, & Scott, 2019). The accessibility of multiple resources with current health care issues in one platform is attractive.

Nurses should seek membership in organizations that best support their professional and personal goals (Echevarria, 2018). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners believes in the importance of patient-centered health care. Its mission is to empower every NP in advance quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership (AANP, 2021). To become a member of AANP, you must fill an application. There are different membership categories: Nurse practitioner, student, licensed NP student, career starter, retired NP, and associate non-NP member. As an ICU travel nurse, technically a “COVID ICU travel nurse,” the workload has become more demanding in the past year and a half.  During this time, I couldn’t physically be with my family due to obvious reasons, which made coping alone difficult.  I also started noticing a feeling of being utterly drained of energy.  I was burned out!  According to research, health workers can encounter various psychological difficulties when working in high-pressure and high-risk situations, such as those associated with disasters and pandemics (Salamah, 2020).  So instead of taking the break I so desperately needed, I decided to head back to nursing school and keep that momentum of intensity going.  Unfortunately, distraction is a coping mechanism I have learned to master.  So it’s clear to say, here is where I’ve been struggling a bit with making a definite career choice.  Though I love taking care of patients and providing support to families, I started questioning whether or not working in a hospital setting as a nurse practitioner is what I wanted to do.  I knew I needed some guidance and clarity if I wanted to stay on the path of becoming an acute care NP.

I began working in the emergency department a year into my career as a nurse.  When I began working there, some of the most helpful people were the nurse educators.  They assisted clinically and took the time to explain the reasons we performed different tests on people, gave them different medications, and assisted on how to perform detailed assessments.  The emergency department that I work in has a high acuity, as well as high volume, so for them to take the time to explain helped tremendously in my orientation process.  There was one educator in particular who was very hands on, answered any and all questions I had, and taught me how to think critically.  She was the person who helped me how to think like a critical care nurse, working in the high paced environment.

This was when I decided that I wanted to become a nurse educator.  I knew that before I pursued this career choice I would need to become an expert in the field.  Nurses with a high-level professional knowledge and skills are needed for appropriate education and training of nursing personnel (Satoh et al., 2020).  I worked on the floor as a staff nurse as well as a nurse preceptor to sharpen my skills, and to begin to learn how to teach newer nurses as they begin their journey in the emergency department.

One of the difficulties I found in making my decision was if I should continue to pursue the education track, or if I should look into the administration track.  Ultimately, I decided to go with the Masters of Nursing with a concentration in Education because I felt this was more suitable for my future career.  I have recently taken on the role of assistant nurse manager, but as a clinical role, I feel that the education track will help me be able to teach young nurses the way a nurse educator would.  It will also help me keep the staff engaged, facilitate learning, and assist others in developing their learning techniques.

My career goal are to excel in my new role as an assistant nurse manager, and to teach nursing students during their clinical rotations.  I can do both of these things by getting the most out of my education at Walden University.
