Title: NURS 6003 Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I examined the connection between academic integrity and writing, as well as the connection between professional practices and scholarly ethics. Additionally, I have identified strategies for maintaining the integrity and ethics of my academic work while enrolled in the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The outcome of these efforts is included below.

Directions: In the space below, create an analysis/writing sample that includes Part 1 (The Relationship Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (The Relationship Between Academic and Professional Integrity) (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: An Example of Academic and Professional Integrity

Academic integrity is critical to the learning process’s success. Academic integrity is an integral part of the educational process. It enables an individual to develop an innate sense of honesty and dependability when engaging in various activities. Academic integrity and writing are inextricably linked. Academic writing frequently becomes a challenge during the course of learning or while enrolled in a course due to the stages and procedures that must be followed. Academic writing requires an individual to build on the work of others while remaining original (Walden University Academic Skills Center, n.d). In other words, the entire writing process requires an individual to generate something unique. Academic integrity is frequently observed during the writing process when the author or writer uses the work, ideas, or words of another person. The aforementioned scenario enables an individual to uphold the discipline standard and the institution they represent. Thus, academic integrity should be observed throughout the writing process to ensure the work’s authenticity and legitimacy (Walden University Academic Skills Center, n.d). On the other hand, professional conduct and scholarly ethics are inextricably linked. Scholarly ethics should always be applied to various professional practices to ensure the work is done with the utmost integrity. To maintain a high level of professionalism, individuals must always adhere to scholarly ethics

Scholarly ethics refers to the total set of implicit and explicit professional characteristics and standards that describe an ethical scholarly community. A scholarly community often bases the definition of scholarly ethics in the integrity and whatever creates value in the educational process. High level of professionalism or professional practices adheres to the scholarly ethics. Professional practices often require adherence to the ethical principles that guides the activities being undertaken (Glasper, 2016). The ethical principles are related to the scholarly ethics.

Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity in various ways. Grammarly often ensures that there is a proper application of phrases that are in line with the writing standards. Scholarly ethics often require the application of the best practices in the writing process. Adhering to the effective writing process characterized by the standardized format is part of the academic integrity (Glasper, 2016). Paraphrasing, on the other hand, leads to originality in the writing process; it thus prevents plagiarism, a scenario that contributes to high level of academic integrity. Also, SafeAssign prevents the cases of unnecessary plagiarism, a scenario that leads to ethics in the writing process and eventual academic integrity in the wring process.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Maintaining integrity and ethics in the educational process requires the application of different strategies. Integrity and ethical practices are essential parts of professionalism. In the educational processes, learners have to adhere to the ethical practices to enhance their integrity, not only in the educational programs, but also in the future work process. Academic integrity refers to the commitment to honesty and moral behaviors in the academic practices. In the writing process, it is necessary to provide credit the work of other people whenever their thoughts or works are used in the writing process. In other words, it is necessary to acknowledge other people’s ideas when they are used in the writing process. Academic integrity is relevant at the university level as it relates to giving credit to other people of professionals when applying their ideas. From the ideas given in part one, to maintain high level of integrity and ethics, there is always the need to adhere to the originality of the work. In other words, there is the need to become creative in the writing process to avoid copying other people’s ideas without acknowledging them.

To maintain integrity and ethics in the writing process, I would ensure that the expectations of the work are well communicated including the citations and other forms of information required to ensure integrity and ethical practices. Producing original work free

from plagiarism and grammatical mistakes in the MSN program requires elaborate planning since procrastination and lack of enough time often lead to the temptation to engage in cheating. Therefore, planning is critical in ensuring the production of original work that is free from plagiarism. Another strategy that I would employ in the MSN program is to maintain integrity and ethics in the scholarly work is the involvement of the smart decision such as engaging in doing personal work, diligently and persistently studying for examinations, and preparing effectively before engaging in writing personal essays. As a professional nurse, throughout my career, I intend to embrace research and to maintain ethical practices to ensure integrity in the operational processes. As a student I intend to use Grammarly, plagiarism checker, as well as credible sources of information. The above resources will enhance the originality of my work ensuring the integrity in academic processes. As a professional, I intend to adhere to the professional practices; I also intend to employ the required ethical standard to ensure effective treatment outcome.

Quiz: APA Style and Format

As a nurse embarking on an advanced degree, you are developing the characteristics of a scholar-practitioner, which include strong communication skills. Writing in a scholarly manner involves supporting your thoughts with evidence from the literature and appropriately using APA formatting.

One of the challenges of scholarly writing is paraphrasing the thoughts of others in your work. Paraphrasing, and correctly citing the original author for his or her ideas, allows you to take the ideas of others, summarize them, and incorporate them into your own writing. When summarizing the ideas of others, it is important to avoid plagiarizing (i.e., copying the words and ideas of others as though they were your own). In addition to expanding your knowledge of APA Style, this modules’s Learning Resources help you distinguish between paraphrasing and plagiarizing.

This Quiz will help you determine how your understanding of these concepts and prepardness to reflect them in your work. The questions presented on the Quiz are derived from the Resources related to APA writing standards, plagiarism, and academic integrity.

Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

A Sample Answer 2 For the Assignment: NURS 6003 Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Title: NURS 6003 Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Academic integrity involves fundamental values such as fairness, honesty, responsibility, and trust in writing. In essence, it involves moral and honest practices in any academic setting involving writing (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). Academic integrity and writing cannot be separated as they lay a foundation for professional ethics in literary work. Students, particularly those in tertiary institutions such as universities and writers have the mandate to acknowledge the ideas of others and appreciate the respective authors by quoting their names (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). In other words, academic writing relies on building information that other scholars have published. Academic integrity will therefore compel a student or a writer to provide credit to other authors by demonstrating honesty with information retrieved by published sources (Cronan et al., 2018). Academic works that lack integrity are considered plagiarized and these constitute an academic crime in the literary world.

Professional practices refer to a set of conducts and behavior that define a given profession with which people within the specialty must comply with (West, 2020). Scholarly ethics on the other hand relates to integrity and accuracy that are significant when developing a written publication for sale or general use. The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics is inseparable (Kadam, 2018). Often, professionalism is defined by ideals developed through evidence-based scholarly articles that can be used as a guide in decision-making. Scholarly ethics requires utmost integrity so that the published work does not confuse professionals during decision-making and practice (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). Besides, professional practices are confounded by multiple challenges which then requires scholars who can identify real problems and come up with solutions to address emerging issues in areas of expertise and this can only occur when scholarly materials are not corrupted.

Students and other writings are required to demonstrating honesty and integrity in the academic or literary work. The use of Grammarly, SafeAssign, and paraphrasing allows academic writers to proofread work to rectify anomalies in written work before submission (Cronan et al., 2018). Paraphrasing and SafeAssign serve a critical role in addressing plagiarism in academic writing. Paraphrasing ensures that information of another author is written in a different language instead of being copy and pasted from the original text. SafeAssign on the other hand is a software to detect plagiarized texts in a written material (Kadam, 2018). Apart from guiding in text formatting and grammar, grammarly also has a plagiarism checker embedded in its software that can quickly scan borrowed texts in written work. It is, therefore, necessary for one to use proper citation and paraphrase documents to ensure academic integrity in written work.

Networking Opportunities

My name is Adesola Adedapo. I am originally from West Africa, Nigeria, where I trained as a Nurse and practiced Nursing for nine years before moving to the United States in 2019 to continue my Nursing practice as a United States Registered Nurse and I have been working on the Medical-Surgical unit since then. However, my interest is in Mental Health, which became my passion in my third year in the University. My love for mental health patients, the desire to assist them to any length and to change the population’s negative mindset about these set of people motivated me to pursue this program, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

Networking is an integral part of success in any field, and Nursing is not an exception. Networking is not only imperative for students’ survival in their academic pursuit but also important for smooth operation in any specialty. According to Schmidt (2020), to improve patient outcomes and employee’s satisfaction, Nurses must utilize networking to collaborate with other professionals such as physicians, administrators, therapists, technicians and other professionals considered as allies.

While researching for schools offering PMHNP, I realized that Walden University’s mission, vision, and goals are compatible with mine. In terms of the University’s vision, it envisions training graduates who can apply acquired knowledge to “the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good” (Walden University, 2020a). This school’s mission cannot be overlooked by anyone yearning for the kind of education that will build a better tomorrow. According to the mission, “Walden University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2020a). Education that lacks good quality, integrity, and student-centeredness is worthless. Walden University reflects these three significant values. In my opinion, these three values upgrade Walden University to the level of the Ivy League schools.

As a student aspiring to become a scholar-practitioner, my academic and professional goals are centered on generating new ideas that will help create innovative solutions that will positively change the mental health specialty and the nursing field. According to Walden University (2020b), positive change is defined as “deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies.”

Walden University is distinguished in preparing students to become future leaders in their prospective chosen careers. Besides preparing students to become future leaders, Walden is also keen on instilling knowledge to make their products competitive in modern technology. According to Walden University ( 2020c), “The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) prepares students to focus their practice on the identified health needs of society, become leaders in their field through scholarship, manage technology and information, and develop a lifelong commitment to learning.”
